The abandoned hunting lodge crouched beneath a canopy of twisted branches, its rotting walls swallowed by morning mist. The bayou stretched beyond it, black water winding between cypress roots, while insects buzzed over the stagnant pools. The air smelled of wet earth, decaying leaves, and something dead left too long in the heat.
Damon crouched behind a fallen tree, watching two Guerrera scouts cross the clearing. Stefan remained several feet away, studying their formation, while Katherine leaned against a cypress trunk with the bored expression of someone waiting for a party to become interesting.
"They've really committed to the swamp-dwelling lifestyle," Damon murmured. "The clothes, the smell, the general lack of civilization. I can practically hear the banjos."
Katherine glanced at him. "Try to remember that we're here to do a job, Damon. Not everyone finds your commentary as charming as you do."
"That's because not everyone appreciates quality entertainment."
Stefan ignored them, his attention fixed on the clearing. Several wolves guarded the lodge while two others carried a heavy iron case toward a waiting wagon. A man with a leather satchel kept close to them, repeatedly checking the path behind him.
"They're protecting the cargo more carefully than each other," Stefan said. "Whatever they're moving, it's the priority."
Damon's grin sharpened. "Then let's relieve them of their precious belongings."
A Guerrera stepped into the open and raised his hand. The moon ring on his finger caught the light.
His transformation began with a sharp crack.
His shoulders jerked backward, his spine arched, and his knees buckled as the bones in his legs reshaped beneath his skin. His jaw pushed forward with a wet series of pops. Fingers bent, nails split, and claws emerged as his hands stretched toward the ground. He dropped to all fours, shaking violently while dark fur spread across his body.
The change was brutal, but the ring allowed him to complete it in daylight.
The newly transformed wolf lifted its head and snarled.
Damon watched from behind the tree, unimpressed.
"We can also do it," he said, a smirk spreading across his face. "But better."
He rose into view.
The Guerreras turned toward him, and the clearing filled with growls. Several wolves shifted immediately, their bodies twisting and stretching as clothes tore around expanding limbs. One stumbled during the change, its shoulder striking the ground with a sickening thud before it managed to stand.
Damon, Stefan, and Katherine transformed almost together.
Their larger wolf forms emerged with controlled, powerful movements. They were not merely animals unleashed by magic. There was intelligence in their eyes, calculation in the way they held their bodies, and a confidence that the Guerreras had no way to match.
For a heartbeat, neither side moved.
Then the first wolf charged.
Damon met it head-on.
The collision sounded like a tree splitting under a storm. Both creatures crashed through the lodge's rotten porch, sending boards and nails flying. The Guerrera rolled across the floor, scrambling to regain its footing, but Damon was already on top of it. He caught it by the throat and drove it into the remains of a wooden support beam.
The beam snapped.
Before the wolf could recover, Damon seized its foreleg in his jaws and wrenched sideways. Bone cracked beneath the fur. The creature screamed, a harsh, broken sound, and collapsed onto its side, kicking helplessly at the splintered boards.
Damon released it and stepped away as it dragged itself backward, leaving a dark smear across the floor.
"That's one," he called, his tone almost cheerful.
Another wolf launched itself onto his back, its teeth closing around the thick muscle near his shoulder. Damon staggered forward, snarling, then slammed himself against the lodge wall. The impact shook dust from the rafters. His attacker lost its grip, and Damon spun around before it could land properly.
He caught it in midair and hurled it into a tree.
The wolf struck the trunk with a heavy crack and dropped into the mud. It tried to rise, its front legs folding beneath it, but Damon was already moving. His jaws closed around its neck, and he shook it violently until the creature went limp.
Across the clearing, Stefan fought with a colder precision.
He ducked beneath a charging wolf and drove his shoulder into its ribs. The impact sent them both crashing into a patch of mud. Before his opponent could bite, Stefan twisted its head away and slammed it against the exposed roots of a cypress.
Once.
Twice.
The third impact left the wolf sprawled in the mud, blood darkening the water around its muzzle.
Stefan released it and turned toward another attacker. The second wolf came at him from the side, claws raking across his flank. Stefan barely reacted to the wound. He seized the creature's foreleg, twisted until the joint gave way, and used its sudden collapse to pull it off balance.
The wolf hit the ground hard enough to knock the breath from its lungs.
Stefan pinned it beneath his weight. His teeth flashed, and the struggle ended in a brief, savage burst of movement. When he stepped away, the creature lay motionless among the crushed reeds.
He stood still for a moment, breathing steadily, then looked toward the others.
The Guerreras were beginning to understand their mistake.
Their rings had given them freedom from the moon, but freedom was not mastery. They had the bodies of wolves without the experience, discipline, or strength to face three first-generation hybrids created by Viktor Mikaelson.
And their opponents were not tiring.
Katherine had allowed two wolves to corner her near the lodge. She shifted back into human form, leaving both creatures momentarily confused.
"Really, gentlemen," she said, brushing a loose strand of hair away from her face. "If you're going to surround a woman, at least have the decency to make it interesting."
One lunged.
Katherine shifted before its teeth could reach her. Her wolf form slipped beneath the attack and struck the creature's exposed side, driving it into a tree. The second wolf crashed into them, and all three tumbled into the undergrowth.
Katherine emerged first.
Her jaws clamped onto the nearest wolf's shoulder. She dragged it backward, forcing it to stumble, then threw her weight against it until the creature collapsed. When it snapped at her, she caught its muzzle and wrenched its head aside, leaving it howling in the dirt.
The other wolf charged again.
Katherine sprang away at the last instant. It struck a fallen trunk, and she landed on its back, forcing it into the mud. Her teeth closed around its neck until its resistance weakened.
She released it with a sharp shake of her head.
"Honestly," she muttered after shifting back, "I expected better."
A whistle cut through the clearing.
The surviving Guerreras broke formation. Some fled toward the trees, while others formed a desperate barrier around the iron case and the man carrying the satchel. One wounded wolf limped past its companions without receiving so much as a glance.
Stefan noticed.
"They're abandoning their own people to protect the cargo."
Damon emerged from the ruined porch, mud and blood streaking his fur. "That's touching. Nothing says family loyalty quite like leaving your friends to get slaughtered while you save a box."
The man with the satchel broke toward a narrow trail.
Damon saw him and changed direction immediately.
The wolf carrying the bag barely made it beyond the lodge before Damon slammed into his side. They struck the ground together, tearing through the wet earth. The satchel flew from the man's grasp and landed near a cluster of roots.
Damon pinned him down, his jaws hovering inches from the wolf's throat.
"Stay there. I'm having a terrible week, and I promise you won't enjoy being the next thing that annoys me."
The Guerrera struggled beneath him. Damon pressed harder until the wolf stopped fighting.
Katherine retrieved the satchel while Stefan approached the iron case. Its metal surface bore several unfamiliar markings, and the seals remained intact despite the chaos surrounding it.
The remaining wolves disappeared into the mist, carrying the artifact with them.
Damon shifted back and wiped mud from his face. "Well, that was rude. We supplied the violence, they supplied the paperwork, and somebody else gets to keep the prize."
Katherine opened the satchel. Inside were folded documents, names written in dark ink, and a list of locations scattered across New Orleans. Her amusement faded as she read the first page.
"This is a record of magical transactions," she said. "Names, payments, delivery points. Someone has been documenting the movement of objects and information through the city."
Stefan looked toward the trail where the wolves had vanished. The clearing behind him was littered with broken branches, ruined timber, and injured bodies. The mud had turned dark beneath the fallen Guerreras, and the sharp smell of blood hung over the water.
"We have the records they came to destroy," he said. "But the artifact was important enough for them to sacrifice half their pack."
Damon picked up the satchel and slung it over his shoulder.
"Then let's take our little collection home. Viktor can enjoy the reading, and Freya can examine the box. Personally, I think we've earned breakfast."
Katherine gave the clearing one final look before following them.
The hunt had lasted only minutes, but the Guerreras had paid dearly for every second. Their survivors were disappearing into the bayou with Seraphine's prize, while the Mikaelsons now held something far more dangerous than a stolen artifact.
They had names.
And Viktor was very good at making people regret giving him a reason to learn them.
