Chapter 1: That's the Idea, Ochaco
The day after the USJ incident, news reports were being broadcast about the incident all over Japan.
In a run down building, an old hero, named Gran Torino, was reading a letter from his previous student, All Might. It read: "Greetings. The air is warm here. It feels like summer is right around the corner. I hope this letter finds you well, sir. In good health and even better spirits. This semester, I took a position as a teacher at UA High School. Heh, that's right. I'm now guiding the next generation of heroes. I was hoping to find someone worthy of inheriting my power among the elite students at the school. A hero in training with outstanding test scores and a powerful Quirk. However, before I ever began my tenure at UA, I met a young man. Even though he was weak, and had no Quirk of his own, he showed incredible bravery. He rushed into a dangerous situation that caused pro heroes, including myself, to hesitate, and managed to save the life of a classmate. With some help that I'll talk about in a minute. He may not have had a plan when he acted, but he knew he had to do something. I feel like watching this young man spring into action taught me something that day, and it reminded me of the virtues I must embody in order to call myself a pro. A hero. That's why I meant it when I said to him, young man, you too can become a hero. Soon after that, I told this pupil the secret of my Quirk, and proposed that I transfer it to him. This ability I have, that has been passed on from person to person, cultivated, and made stronger, the crystallization of power that binds itself to a courageous heart for the good of those in need: One For All. He accepted without hesitation, and I began training him for the trials he'd need to overcome in order to be accepted into the hero course at UA High School. Even though he sometimes struggled with his newfound abilities, he never stopped fighting, and gave 100% as he tried to harness One For All. I don't like to toot my own horn, but I believe I found the perfect person to pass my Quirk on to. He has shown me time and again that he has what it takes to be a real hero. And speaking of real heroes, the help I mentioned before. That is about another boy I met along with the one I passed my Quirk onto. He's an American foreign exchange student, but his Quirk is something else. It's known as Ghost, and it comes with many different powers, almost like One For All. But this young man seems like an experienced pro. He rushed in to save my successor and their classmate despite the potential consequences of using his Quirk without a license. Even though he is young, he seems wise beyond his years and understands what a true hero is. He also seems haunted, like something in his past made him who he is today. He knows my secret as well, just as I have been keeping his. I'm still quite new to the role as an instructor. The day may come when I must trouble you, my old teacher, for advice. I'll be counting on your wisdom and patience when the time comes. Until then, please take care of yourself as the seasons begin to change. I'll continue to keep you updated about what's happening. Sincerely yours."
Gran Torino sighed, "So, Toshinori has found a worthy successor. And this ghost boy he's talking about. I wonder why he's got my old student concerned."
Back at UA High, Tsukauchi was meeting with the UA Teachers, "Our investigators are trying to learn everything they can about this so-called League of Villains. We've made some progress, but we can't find anything on this Shigaraki so far. We've searched our records for men in their 20s or 30s who are registered as having some sort of disintegration Quirk, but so far, we've come up empty. Same for the Warp Gate villain, Kurogiri. So they're not citizens or they're using aliases. Hard to find, either way."
Vlad King spoke up, "So what you're really saying is we don't know anything."
"We've got to track them down," Snipe commented. "I shot their ringleader, but once he heals up he'll probably try pullin' something like this again. What a pain."
All Might sighed, "He did seem like the type."
Nezu asked, "Is something on your mind, All Might?"
All Might answered, "The attack on the USJ was too bold. No sane adult would ever attempt it. The ringleader kept monologuing about the reasons he was there. And he bragged about Nomu's many Quirks, but he never said a word about his own powers. When things didn't go his way, he was visibly upset. Like he was gonna throw a tantrum. Ah, I guess bragging about Nomu's Quirks was a quick way to draw me into a fight."
Nezu spoke up, "That may be true, yes, but strategically, it was foolish to reveal his Quirks up front instead of keeping them a secret."
All Might continued, "Shigaraki made wild, immature claims, but did so with a completely straight face. And he talked about Nomu like he was some kind of a pet. It seems like he'd never been told "no" before, like he thought things would go his way no matter what. He has the personality of a spoiled child. A man child."
"A child with incredible power, though," Vlad King spoke up.
Midnight added, "It's possible he never got the Quirk counseling students receive in elementary school."
"Maybe so," Snipe commented, "But it doesn't really matter now."
Tsukauchi continued, "There were 72 villains arrested in the aftermath of the USJ attack. They were all small-time thugs who usually lurked around back allies. What worries me is that this man child got them all to follow his crazy plan. They viewed him as a real leader. Criminals are starting to feel more pressure now that the world is brimming with heroes. That could be why they were so quick to back such simple minded villainy."
Vlad King nodded, "Guess that makes sense."
Snipe commented, "They're plenty of people out there lookin' for a cause to get behind."
Midnight asked, "So, what can we do to stop them?"
Tsukauchi answered, "Well, it is thanks to you heroes that we have the time to devote ourselves to this case. We'll expand our investigation and continue searching for the perpetrators who planned this attack."
Nezu said, "A man child, huh? In some ways, he shares common ground with our students. They both have so much potential. And, like our students, I suppose it's possible that someone is guiding him, trying to nurture his malice and villainy."
All Might sighed, "I don't wanna think about what that could mean."
Over at Izuku's apartment, Izuku was sitting in his room watching old All Might videos, as school was closed the day after the USJ incident. He couldn't relax, "I'm still so far away from becoming a real hero. During the USJ attack, all my classmates and I did was slow Mr. Aizawa and Thirteen down. If it weren't for All Might and our teachers, we never would have stood a chance against those villains. All of us except for Danny. He rescued all of our classmates that were teleported away. And he stood toe-to-toe against the big bad and that monster. He definitely has the experience and power to become a real hero. Heck, he is a real hero. In order to truly oppose evil, I have to make All Might's power my own. I have to embody One For All and master every aspect of it, until it's second nature for me. Because, there isn't much time left. And because I'm the one he chose, I'll make him proud! And I'll finally be at the same level as Danny."
His mother knocked on his door, "Izuku?"
"Yeah?" Izuku asked as his mother opened the door.
"Lunch time," his mother replied. "Your food's getting cold."
Izuku smiled, "I'll be right there. Thanks, mom."
He went and sat down at the table across from his mom, "Eat up! Those new muscles need lots of fuel."
Over at Danny's apartment, he was also in his room, thinking to himself. But he was thinking about what Clockwork said, "Clockwork said that soon I'd be ready. But ready for what? Is something going to happen in this world? In the Ghost Zone? God, I hate him sometimes."
Jazz knocked on the door, "Hey, little brother. Can I come in?"
Danny sat up on his bed, "Yeah, come on in."
Jazz opened the door and sat down next to Danny, "How are you feeling?"
"Better," Danny answered. "After Clockwork gave me some ecto energy, I've been getting my energy back faster."
Jazz nodded, "And how are you doing? I mean, we've been in this world for over a year, and I guess I haven't asked how you are fitting in."
Danny sighed, "There was a lot to learn about this world over the past year. People with powers are everywhere. Walking around and seeing all those crises happen, I hated that I couldn't do anything because I don't have that stupid license."
Jazz laughed, "Well, that's your ghost nature I guess. I remember that Clockwork explained that every ghost has a certain nature that drives them, gives them purpose. Yours is saving people. So I can imagine you going crazy. Trust me, as an empath now, I could feel all of your sour emotions all the time."
Danny groaned, "Sorry, sis. But how have you been doing here?"
Jazz smiled, "College has been going well. I'm at the top of my class and will be starting an internship soon."
Danny then asked, "Do you miss home at all?"
Jazz sighed, "Yeah, I do. But I also remember the painful memories there and I keep reminding myself that I am here to make new memories. And to look after you."
Danny agreed, "Yeah, I miss my friends. I miss Amity Park. But I've made new friends here. And I've been learning so much. I just wish there was a way to contact my friends to make sure that they're OK."
Jazz put her arm around her brother, "Maybe one day we can. Just give it time."
The next day at UA, Class 1-A was talking about the USJ incident.
Toru said, "You guys! Did you watch the news last night? It was so cool that we got a few seconds of screen time! Though I bet nobody noticed me hanging out in the background."
"Probably not," Shoji noted.
Oijiro added, "It is difficult to stand out when you're just gloves."
Kaminari sighed happily, "We're totally big deals. Those news channels love us, we're basically celebrities."
Kirishima added, "Yeah, it's kinda crazy, right?"
Jiro said, "Get over yourselves. The hero course that pumps out pros was attacked, and that's what they cared about."
Sero added, "Who knows what would've happened to us if the teachers didn't show up."
Sato commented, "Did you see All Might fighting that bird guy? That dude was super strong, and he still destroyed him!"
"Yes," Tokoyami said. "His strength is truly a thing of wonder."
"However," Kirishima added. "Danny was a true MVP. He stood against that big guy and the creepy guy like it was nothing. I didn't realize he was that powerful."
"Yes," Shoto said. "He looked like a seasoned pro out there."
Danny slid down in his seat trying to avoid being the center of attention. Momo noticed and whispered, "It's OK, Danny. They're just praising your work."
Tenya ran through the door, "Attention! Homeroom class is about to begin! Everyone stop talking and take your seats."
But everyone already was. Danny sat up and said, "Tenya, we're all already sitting. I appreciate your enthusiasm for being co-class rep, but just take it down a notch, ok? And maybe go ahead and sit down?"
Tenya got to his seat and looked embarrassed. Ochaco reassured him, "Don't sweat it."
Mina leaned back and asked, "Hey, Tsu, so, who do ya think is gonna teach class today?"
"No idea," Tsuyu answered. "Mr. Aizawa's still in the hospital recovering from his injuries."
The door opened and Aizawa walked in, covered in bandages, "Morning, class."
Class 1-A shouted, "Mr. Aizawa, what are you doing here?"
Tenya raised his hand, "Mr. Aizawa, I'm glad you're OK."
"You call that OK?" Ochaco mumbled.
Aizawa made it to the front podium, "My well being is irrelevant. What's more important is that your fight isn't over yet. The UA Sports Festival is about to start."
The class cheered while Danny sat there confused. He didn't know what the sports festival was. But he didn't want to look stupid and ask in front of the class.
Kirishima shouted, "Let's go kick some ass!"
Kaminari interrupted, "Wait a minute."
Jiro asked, "Is it really such a good idea to hold the sports festival so soon after the villains snuck inside."
Oijiro added, "They could attack once we're all in the same place."
Aizawa sighed, "Apparently the administration thinks this is a good way to show that the threat has been handled and our school is safer than ever. Plus they're beefing up security compared to past years. This event is a huge opportunity for all students at UA. It's not something we can cancel because of a few villains. Our sports festival is one of the most watched events in the entire world. In the past, everyone obsessed over the Olympic games. But then Quirks started appearing. Now, the Olympics have been drastically reduced in terms of scale and viewership. For anyone who cares about competition, there's only one tournament that matters. The UA Sports Festival."
"That's right," Momo added. "And top heroes everywhere will be watching. This is where you get scouted."
Danny was at first unsure about it as he didn't like being the center of attention, but when Momo said that this is a chance to be scouted, he knew that being scouted would eventually lead to him getting his hero license.
"She's right," Kaminari noted. "After graduating, a lot of people join pro agencies as sidekicks."
Jiro sighed, "Yeah, but that's as far as some people go. They miss their chance to go indie and stay eternal sidekicks. Actually, that's probably where you're headed. You're kinda dumb."
Aizawa continued, "It's true that joining a famous hero agency can garner you great experience and popularity. That's why the festival matters. If you wanna go pro one day, then this event could open the path for you. One chance a year. Three chances in a lifetime. No aspiring hero can afford to miss this festival. That means you better not slack off on your training."
He stared right at Danny, who got a little creeped out. But Aizawa was thinking, "That American boy just proved that he truly has what it takes to be a pro. I'm betting right now he's the one who will go all the way."
"Yes, sir," Class 1-A replied.
"Class is dismissed," Aizawa said as he walked out of the room.
Later that day, after a class, everyone from Class 1-A was talking about the sports festival.
Kirishima was very excited about the festival, "That villain stuff sucked, sure, but I'm pumped for these games!"
Sero added, "We put on a good show, and we're basically on the road to being pros!"
Sato then said, "Yeah, this is why I'm even here in the first place."
"We get so few chances," Tokoyami added. "We have to make the most of this."
Toru said to Oijiro, "Oh man, Oijiro, I'm getting kind of nervous about the festival. I have to come up with a way to get noticed at the festival. Maybe a cheer."
"Ah, sure," Oijiro replied. "Maybe you should be looking at a shiner costume or something? Otherwise, you're gonna have to try really hard."
Aoyama said, "My, what's a boy to do? I stand out even when I'm standing still. That means the scouts won't be able to take their eyes off of me! Don't you agree?"
Koda just nodded nervously.
Kaminari sighed,"You're so lucky, Shoji. People are bound to notice your unique Quirk."
Shoji replied, "Sure, but what matters is that I show them how useful I can be."
Jiro giggled, "Yeah, no doubt you'll make a scene, too, Kaminari."
Kaminari growled at that.
Izuku said, "This is gonna be nuts. Everyone's so excited."
Tenya replied, "Well, yeah, of course we are. We enrolled in this school with the sole aim to become heroes. So, naturally, we're all getting fired up. You have to be excited too, right, Midoriya?"
Izuku nodded, "Well, yeah, of course I am. But I'm also nervous." He then looked over at Danny, who was sitting at his seat, alone with his thoughts. Izuku walked over to him, "Hey, Danny, are you excited about the sports festival?"
Danny sighed, "To be honest, I'm not sure. I mean, I've never heard of the sports festival until now."
"You didn't watch it on TV?" Tenya asked as he walked over.
Danny shook his head, "No, don't really watch TV. But that's not what I'm most worried about. I'm contemplating if I even want to participate."
That made the entire class stop and stare at Danny.
"Dude!" Kirishima shouted. "Why not? It's a chance to get ourselves noticed. It's one step closer to becoming a pro."
"I know that," Danny replied. "I want to be a pro too, like all of you do. But I also know that, and I don't mean to sound cocky, if I participate, I'd dominate the entire competition."
Bakugo growled at that statement, but Izuku understood where Danny was coming from. He saw his true strength and power during the USJ incident. He was many levels above the rest of them, even Kacchan.
Bakugo slammed his hand down, causing a mini explosion, "Listen here, Fenton. You think you're hot shit with that Quirk of yours! But I'm gonna beat you and prove that I'm the next number one hero."
Momo put her hand on Danny's shoulders, "I understand that you're skeptical, and I also know that you hate being the center of attention, but if you want to become a pro like the rest of us, then this is your chance to show what you're made of to everyone out there. Plus, maybe kicking Bakugo's butt will be interesting to watch."
"I heard that!" Bakugo shouted.
Danny thought for a moment, "Maybe they both have a point. I mean, I want to get my license so that I can be a hero without breaking the law." He looked up at the entire class staring at him, "Well, I guess, I'll compete."
The class cheered at that.
Ochaco then said, "Danny, Deku, Iida." The three boys looked over and saw a serious look on her face as she said, "Let's do our best at the sports festival."
Izuku asked, "Uraraka, what happened to your face?"
Mina also asked, "Seriously, what's up? You're normally like the most laid back girl ever."
Ochaco put her fist up into the air, "Everyone, I'm gonna do my best!" Izuku and Tenya cheered with her as Danny chuckled. She said the same thing to other classmates, who cheered less enthusiastically, and some questioned if she was OK."
Later, on the way to lunch, Izuku asked Ochaco, "Hey, Uraraka? Why did you decide to come to UA? What made you want to become a pro hero?"
Ochaco stuttered, "Oh….well…because….for money."
Izuku was stunned, "For the money? You wanna be a hero so you can get rich?"
Ochaco replied, "If we're cutting to the chase, yeah. I'm sorry if it sounds greedy. I mean, you guys have such admirable motivations. I hope you don't think less of me now."
"Not at all!" Tenya reassured her. "Your goal is to support your wellbeing, which is a perfectly admirable ambition to have."
Danny nodded, "Yeah, it's just kinda surprising."
Ochaco sighed, "Well, you see, my family owns a construction company, but we haven't gotten any work lately, so we're flat broke. Anyway, this really isn't something I usually tell other people, but…"
Momo then said, "Construction huh? If you get licensed, then I bet you can use your Quirk to bring costs down a lot. And then your family can sell their heavy lifting equipment because you can float everything."
"Thank you!" Ochaco replied. "That's what I've been thinking. I've been telling my dad that since I was a kid. But my dad said that I should achieve my own dream. That would make him and my mom happy. So I'm gonna become a pro. I'll sign with a good agency and make plenty of money. Then I'll be able to let my parents have an easy life!"
Tenya started to clap and shouted, "Bravo!" over and over again. Izuku realized that she was more grounded than all of them. Momo smiled at her ambition. Danny thought about how he never had conversations like that with his parents, which made him tear up a little."
Momo noticed this, "Danny, are you OK?"
Danny wiped his tears away, "Yeah, just thinking that I never got to talk about things like that with my parents. Missed opportunity."
Izuku paled, "Oh, Danny-kun."
Ochaco was puzzled, "Why is it a missed opportunity?"
Danny sighed, "Well…..my parents….died over a year ago. A villain killed them."
Tenya put his hand on Danny's shoulder, "I'm so sorry to hear that, Fenton. You have my condolences."
Momo remembered, "That's why you reacted the way you did when I created those gauntlets for the physical tests. The villain used something similar to…."
Danny nodded solemnly. Momo then hugged Danny, "I'm so sorry, Danny."
Danny reciprocated the hug, then pulled away, "Thanks. I still have my sister though. She became my guardian. And that's why we moved here to Japan. To get away from everything."
Everyone put their hands on Danny's shoulders to comfort him.
Suddenly All Might, in his hero form, ran up to them, "Young Midoriya and Fenton are here!"
Izuku and Danny looked over at All Might. Izuku asked, "All Might? What are you doing here?"
"Lunch," All Might answered. "You two wanna eat with me?"
Izuku and Danny looked around at their friends, and Tenya nodded. Izuku and Danny then went off with All Might.
In the cafeteria, Ochaco wondered, "I wondered what he wanted with Deku and Danny."
Tenya said, "I heard that when All Might was attacked by villains during the USJ incident, Midoriya tried to stop them himself. Perhaps that's what this is about."
"Same with Danny," Momo said. "I heard that he stood toe-to-toe with the big bad. Impressive."
Tenya continued, "Also, remember what Asui said on the bus? Since their Quirks are so similar to each other, it's possible that All Might's taken a liking to him. As for Fenton, I heard that rumor too that he stood up against the main villain. All Might must have been super impressed. How lucky!"
Shoto overheard their conversation, "All Might, Izuku Midoriya, and Danny Fenton, huh?"
In the teacher's lounge, All Might, back in his normal form, told Izuku and Danny that he could only hold his hero form for 50 minutes.
Izuku was shocked, "Only 50 minutes?"
All Might sighed, "Yeah. That's about how long I can use my power now? I overdid it too many times. That Nomu was a really tough customer. He took a lot outta me."
"I feel ya," Danny agreed. "Even my punches barely made a dent in him.
All Might continued, "At this point, I can barely even look like All Might for an hour and a half."
Izuku said, "I'm so sorry. I should've just…"
All Might then started laughing, while coughing blood at the same time. Which made Danny say, "Again, you should really have that blood thing looked at."
All Might calmed down, "You don't need to apologize for anything. Man, we are alike, Young Midoriya. Now, have some tea, you two."
The two boys nodded their thanks.
All Might then said, "I brought you two here to talk about the festival. For you, Young Midoriya, the problem is, you still can't fully control One For All yet. So then, what's your plan?"
Izuku thought for a moment, then remembered, "Wait, I did once. When I landed a smash on that brain villain. There was no backlash at all!"
"That's right," All Might said. "You did mention that. What was different about that smash?"
"Let's see," Izuku replied. "We were facing real villains and I didn't have much time to think, but maybe that's part of it, since I knew this wasn't just more training. This was the very first time, ever, that I used my power against a person."
All Might took in this information, "Hmm. Sounds like you succeeded in subconsciously putting on the brakes so you wouldn't have to kill anyone. Hey, that's some progress at least. Now, you, Young Fenton, I heard that you were having doubts about entering the sports festival."
Danny nodded, "Yeah. You saw how powerful I was during the USJ incident. But that was because it was against real villains, this is for sport. If I compete in the sports festival, then I'll wipe the floor with everyone. No offense, Izuku. Plus, I don't like showing off, being the center of attention."
All Might chuckled, "I can understand your worries. You and Aizawa are similar with the whole staying out of the spotlight thinking. Well, why don't you try this? You can still do well, maybe even win if you want, but have everyone else show off until you have to. Just show enough that pros will at least get interested in wanting you to intern at their agencies, but also help your classmates show off what they can do. I can tell that you care more about others than yourself, this strategy will help that. What do you think?"
Danny thought for a moment, realizing that All Might was right. He could help his classmates look good to potential agencies and he didn't have to steal the spotlight. Just show off enough. But he would be lying if he said that he didn't have a competitive bone in his body. Especially since Bakugo basically challenged him. He looked up at Al Might, "I think I can do that."
All Might smiled, "Excellent. I know both of you boys will do great at the festival. Now, to be frank, I don't have much time left as the world's Symbol of Peace. Soon, I'll have to put that title to bed. And some villains out there are starting to notice that. Someone has to step up and keep the people safe. Midoriya, I gave you my power for one reason: 'cause you will be the hero that takes my place. Do you still feel the same way from when we met? Do you still want to be a hero?"
Izuku nodded, "Yes."
All Might looked at Danny, "And you, Fenton. I can tell that saving people is in your very nature. Will you join Midoriya into becoming a hero?"
Danny nodded, "Yes."
All Might smiled, "Excellent. The time has come for both of you to show what you're made of. This sports festival: it's something that the pros, no, the entire country will be watching very closely. I want you two to think of this sports festival as your debut. Midoriya, you are the fledgling Symbol of Peace. The next All Might! And Fenton, you will become one of the greatest heroes of all time. So, I want you two to introduce yourselves to the world and proudly say, "I am here!""
Chapter 2: Roaring Sports Festival
Danny asked, "Why do you think Izuku is the next Symbol of Peace? I'm surprised you didn't suggest me, not that I'm complaining."
All Might replied, "I just have a feeling that you are meant for more than just becoming a pro. But that's for another time. But you can still introduce yourself to the world and shout, "I am here!""
Izuku gasped, "But All Might. That's your catch phrase. Besides, what can I do? I'm nowhere near the level of someone like Danny."
All Might answered, "You know how the sports festival is set up, right?"
Izuku nodded, "Yeah, of course. Students are separated by class year, and then the support, business, general studies, and hero courses all fight against each other in a bunch of preliminary trials. Whoever makes it through the initial games face off in the finals. It's basically a round robin tournament."
"Right!" All Might replied. "Meaning, you have plenty of opportunities to sell yourself."
Izuku sighed, "I guess."
All Might fell over and Izuku shouted, "I'm sorry! I mean, what you're saying is absolutely correct, All Might. But honestly, it's kind of hard to get excited about this after everything that happened at the USJ. Plus, I've already got the world's greatest hero and the most powerful student in class teaching me, so the festival probably isn't my only hope of getting scouted by an agency. And besides, I don't know that I can stand out right now considering I did so horribly on the fitness tests and can't control One For All very well."
Izuku kept muttering as All Might said, "Man, nobody's better at spitting out word vomit than you, kid."
Danny whacked Izuku in the head, "Dude, relax. And I thought I had things to worry about."
Izuku composed himself, "Oh, hey, are you OK, All Might?"
All Might said, "Some heroes always aim for the top, while others happily settle. The difference between those two mindsets has a big impact on how far you go in the real world. I understand how you feel, Midoriya. And I may even be projecting a bit of myself onto you. However, I hope you haven't forgotten the emotions you felt back on the beach during our training. As for you, Fenton, remember what I suggested."
Later that day as school ended, when Class 1-A tried to leave, they opened the door to their classroom to find a bunch of people were standing there, blocking the way.
"Um, why the heck are you all here?" Ochaco asked.
Tenya also asked, "Do you students have some sort of business with our class?"
Danny was surprised by the amount of students that were blocking the way, but before he could say anything, Bakugo walked right up to the students, "They're scouting out the competition, idiots. We're the class that survived a real villain attack. They just wanted to see us with their own eyes."
He glared at the students blocking the door, "At least now you know what a future pro looks like. Now move it, extras."
Ochaco and Izuku were shaking while Tenya berated Bakugo, "You can't walk around calling people "extras" just because you don't know who they are."
One of the students, named Shinso, walked forward, "So this is Class 1-A. I heard you guys were impressive, but you just sound like an ass. Is everyone in the hero course delusional, or just you?"
Everyone except Bakugo shook their heads, while Bakugo just huffed.
Shinso continued, "How sad to come here and find a bunch of ego maniacs. I wanted to be in the hero course, but like many others here, I was forced to choose a different track. Such is life. I didn't cut it the first time around, but I have another chance. If any of us do well in the sports festival, the teachers can decide to transfer us to the hero course. And they'll have to transfer people out to make room. Scouting the competition? Maybe some of my peers are, but I'm here to let you know that, if you don't bring your very best, I'll steal your spot right from under you. Consider this a declaration of war."
Shinso and Bakugo were starting each other down while the rest of Class 1-A, minus Danny who found all of this amusing.
Suddenly a student from Class 1-B, Tetsutetsu, shouted, "Hey, you! I'm from Class 1-B next door to you! We heard you fought some villains, and I came to see if that was true. But you're just a bunch of brats who think you're better than us! Talk all ya want! It'll just be more embarrassing when you're KO'd."
Bakugo just walked past the blockade and toward the exit as Tetsutetsu shouted, "Don't you ignore me!"
Kirishima shouted at Bakugo, "Dude, where are you going? You gotta say something. It's your fault they're all hating on us, Bakugo."
Bakugo replied, "These people don't matter. The only thing that's important is that I beat them."
Bakugo kept walking as Tetsutetsu shouted, "Hey! I'm comin' for you!"
Kirishima sighed, "I hate that that was such a manly exit."
"You said it," Sato agreed.
Tokoyami added, "We have to beat them, he wasn't wrong."
Kaminari replied, "Yeah, sure, but this sucks! He made us everyone's enemies!"
Danny then stepped forward to the blockade, "Whatever reason you all are here, know this. Bakugo does not speak for our entire class. It was unfortunate and unexpected that we were attacked by villains a few days ago. We did what we had to do in order to survive before the teachers came to the rescue. That situation could have happened to any class in this school. Now, does that mean we may now have an advantage over the other classes because we just received real world experience? Maybe, maybe not. But this sports festival isn't just about showing off one person or one class. It's about showing off UA as a school. It's showing the country what we are all made of. Yes, it is still a competition. But you all should think about your fellow students and help them succeed, not just you. But we all need to give it our best, for the sake of UA High. Now, if you all don't mind, we would all like to leave, so could you please disperse?"
The blockade was stunned by Danny's words. Tenya was crying, "Such an inspirational speech. That shows he was the right choice for class rep."
Momo smiled, "You got that right."
The group of students started to walk away, Shinso stared at Danny for a few moments, then said, "I'm still declaring war on this class." Then he turned and walked away.
Tetsutetsu got into Danny's face, "I'm not falling for that baloney! I think you all are just a bunch of brats!"
Tetsutetsu kept on shouting so Danny just turned intangible and walked right through the screaming student, then turned visible behind him, saying, "Boo." Tetsutetsu screamed and ran away.
"That was badass," Kaminari muttered.
Other students nearby were staring at what Danny did. One girl, Reiko Yanagi of Class 1-B, stared at Danny as her heart started to flutter, "He's ghostly like I am. He's so dreamy."
Class 1-A walked out as Izuku went up to Danny, "That was amazing, Danny-kun. I wish I had courage like that."
Danny put his hand on Izuku's shoulder, "You do. I've seen it."
Ochaco grinned, "You are an inspiration, Danny."
Momo added, "I didn't realize you were that selfless."
Danny sighed, "Well, I learned the hard way that you can't be selfish all the time. Plus, I want all of us to succeed in this sports festival."
Over the next two weeks, everyone trained hard for the sports festival. Everyone did individual training and group training. Danny mainly did the group training so that he could help his classmates prepare.
Suddenly, it was the morning of the sports festival. Izuku was putting his shoes on as his mother said, "Izuku, please be careful, and don't get hurt."
"I won't," Izuku answered.
His mom added, "I'll record the whole festival in HD! Do your best, son."
Izuku nodded, "OK, I'm off."
Danny was also leaving his apartment, Jazz standing near the door, "Good luck, little brother. Although I have a good feeling that you'll win this."
Danny sighed, "Yeah, but I promise I will at least make it entertaining to watch. I don't want to just finish everything quickly. Plus, I want to give my classmates time to shine, too."
Jazz smiled, "You have changed a lot, Danny. I'm proud of you."
Danny smiled back, "Thanks, sis."
He met Izuku and they walked to school. Izuku said, "Hey, Danny. I've been doing a lot of thinking. I know you've helped me out a lot in the past. And I remember what All Might suggested to you about helping our classmates shine. And I want to win this all on my own. I want to go against you and prove that I have improved with One For All. Promise you won't go easy on me?"
Danny smiled, "Sure. If there is some sort of team competition, then I'll be on another team so you can show me what you're made of. And if we do fight each other in the round robin, then I won't hold back."
Over at UA, reporters were waiting outside the gate to get in. One reporter said, "This security line is huge. What's the deal?"
Another reporter answered, "A bunch of villains did just break in. Of course the school's being stricter this year. Some people think they shouldn't be holding this festival, considering what happened."
The first reporter grinned, "Perfect! Nothing brings ratings up like a little controversy! Plus, everyone will tune in to see Class 1-A!"
Other pro heroes were called in to help with security. Kamui Woods was one of them, "I was hoping I'd get to do some scouting while I was here."
Death Arms was with him, "Yeah, too bad we're stuck working security this time."
Mt. Lady was also on security duty, but she got some snacks from the vendors to enjoy, "Looks like they called in pro heroes from all over to guard this thing. Quite a show.
All the students were assigned different rooms based on their class to get ready. Mina complained, "Aw, man. I was totally hoping I could wear my costume."
Oijiro reassured her, "At least everyone will be in uniforms. That'll keep things fair, right?"
Danny nodded as he thought, "I did ask Mr. Aizawa about that rule since my costume is part of my other form. He said I could turn into my other form, but I still had to be in the UA gym clothes like everyone else." That was why Danny turned into Phantom, removed his new costume, then put ecto energy into his gym clothes so that they would be on him when he transformed. He had another pair of gym clothes for her regular form as he could use some of his ghost powers in his human form, but not everything. And he had a feeling that during the round robin, he would need to be in his Phantom form for that.
Sato said, "I wonder what they have in store for us in the first round."
Tokoyami replied, "No matter what they've prepared, we must persevere."
Shoji nodded, "Right."
Tenya stormed into the room, "Everyone, get your game faces on! We're entering the arena soon!"
Everyone got prepared as Shoto walked over to Izuku, "Midoriya."
Izuku turned to Shoto, "Hey, Todoroki. What's up?"
Shoto said, "From an objective standpoint, I think it's fairly clear that I'm stronger than you."
Izuku nodded in agreement.
Shoto continued, "However, you've got All Might in your corner, helping you out. I'm not here to pry about what's going on between you two, and why Fenton is also involved. But know that I will beat you."
Danny stepped in between Izuku and Shoto, "OK, guys, break it up. This may be a competition, but we are still classmates."
Shoto turned to Danny, "Fenton, I know that you helped All Might defeat that giant monster during the USJ incident, but that doesn't mean that you're going to win this festival. I am at the same level as you, maybe even better. And I will prove that."
Danny's eyes glowed green, "Looking forward to it."
Kaminari asked, "What's with all these declarations of war lately?"
Kirishima also asked, "Yeah, what's the big deal? Why are you pickin' a fight all of a sudden? And right before we get started…."
Shoto interrupted, "We're not here to be each other's friends, no matter what our class rep says. Don't forget this isn't a team effort."
"Someone's not a team player," Danny muttered.
Izuku said, "Wait a minute, Todoroki. I don't know what's going through your head, or why you think you'd need to tell me that you'll beat me. And, yeah, of course you're better than me. In fact, you probably have way more potential than anyone in the hero course, like Danny. That's why you got in so easily."
Kirishima reassured, "Midoriya, maybe you are a little hard on yourself, and us."
"No," Izuku continued. "He's right, you guys. All the other courses, they're coming for us with everything they've got. We're all gonna have to fight to stand out. And I'll be aiming for the top, too. And Danny, I know what you said. That we need to help each other. But we also have to help ourselves. No matter how selfish that is."
Danny sighed, realizing that Izuku had a point. But he still wanted to help everyone else do good for the festival.
Outside, Present Mic announced, "Hey-o! Make some noise, all you rabid sports fans! Get those cameras prepared, media hordes! This year, we're bringing you some of the hottest performances in sports festival history, guaranteed! I've only got one question before we start this show: Are you ready? Let me hear you scream as our students make their way to the main stage! This first group are no strangers to the spotlight. You know them from withstanding a villain attack, they're the dazzling students lighting up your TVs with solid gold skills. The hero course students of 1-A!"
Class 1-A walked out into the arena as the audience cheered. Izuku's mom was watching at home, cheering her boy on. Jazz was also at home watching on TV, with a bag of popcorn next to her.
Izuku looked around and got nervous, "Uh, I didn't know there'd be so many people."
Tenya added, "I hope we're still able to give our best performances, even though all these eyes are watching us. I suppose it's just another aspect of being a hero we all have to learn to get used to."
Danny sighed, "Yeah, even though people like me hate being in the spotlight."
Kirishima said, "Present Mic sure did talk us up a lot. Kinda makes me nervous. How you feelin' Bakugo?"
Bakugo grinned, "I'm not worried. Makes me wanna win this thing even more."
Present Mic announced, "They haven't been getting nearly as much screen time, but this next group is still chock full of talent! Welcome, hero course class 1-B!" Class 1-B walked out of another tunnel as the crowd cheered.
Present Mic continued, "Next up, general studies classes C, D, and E!" These students, led by Shinso, walked out of another tunnel.
"Support classes F, G, and H!" These students walked out, with one girl wearing a weird pair of goggles.
"And finally, the business classes I, J, and K!" The last students walked out to join the rest.
"Give it up for all of UA's first year contestants!" The audience cheered for the first year students.
All the students gathered in the middle of the arena where Midnight was waiting, "Now, the introductory speech!"
People in the audience were fawning over Midnight, as her costume was interesting to say the least.
Kirishima said, "Uh, someone should talk to Ms. Midnight about what she's wearing."
Kaminari nodded, "Yeah, that costume should come with a warning."
Tokoyami added, "Is that really appropriate apparel for a high school game?"
"Silence, everyone!" Midnight shouted. "And for the student pledge, we have Danny Fenton!"
Danny was shocked as he wasn't told about this beforehand. Everyone was surprised, but Momo said, "He did place first in the practical exam. So it makes sense."
Danny made his way to the stage, taking a deep breath, trying to forget that he was the center of attention right now. "I'll keep this brief. This may be a competition that will end with one winner, but we are all here to show off our potential to the world. Whether we are of the hero course, general studies, support, or business, everyone here has the chance to do great things in the future. Today, we will all show you what we are made of. So, first year students, give them a sports festival to remember."
The audience cheered as all of the first year students were stunned by Danny's speech. Those who weren't part of the blockade a couple weeks ago were surprised that someone of the hero course would say something so selfless. Others were getting pumped up. The UA teachers that were sitting in the bleachers were amazed by the American's words, All Might smiling at the boy.
Danny walked down and joined his class, Kirishima and Kaminari giving him slaps on the back. Bakugo huffed in annoyance, "I'm still going to beat all of you."
Izuku grinned at his friend, glad that at least Bakugo wasn't chosen to go up and say something, as he probably would have said something about winning the whole thing himself.
Midnight shouted, "Without further ado, it's time for us to get started! This is where you begin to feel the pain! The first fateful game of the festival. Obstacle course! All 11 classes will participate in this treacherous contest. The track is 4 kilometers around the outside of the stadium. I don't wanna restrain anyone, at least in this game. As long as you don't leave the course, you're free to do whatever your heart desires! Now then, take your places, contestants."
All the students walked to the start gate. Izuku thought, "I have to be smart about this. I'm still not able to control One For All yet, so I have to be careful when I use it. That means I have to go beyond. I hope you're watching, All Might!"
The lights counted down from three, and when they all went out, Midnight shouted, "Begin!" All the students started running as fast as they could.
Present Mic narrated, "And we're off to a racing start! How about some color commentary, mummy man?"
Aizawa, still wrapped up in his bandages, was sitting next to Present Mic, "How did you talk me into this?"
Present Mic kept narrating, "What should we be paying attention to in the early stages of the race?"
"The doorway," Aizawa said sarcastically.
All the students were crammed into the starting tunnel, trying to run. Danny, staying in his human form, just made himself intangible and kept running. Shoto used his ice Quirk and froze everyone's feet as he gained the lead, "Sorry, everyone."
Danny made himself visible once he got past the frozen students and flew after Shoto. Bakugo, Momo, Kirishima, and Aoyama dodged the ice attack with their Quirks.
"Nice trick, Todoroki!" Momo shouted, as she had created a metal pole to propel her out of the crowd.
"I won't let you get away that easily!" Katsuki shouted as he used his Quirk to propel himself through the air. "You icy-hot bastard!"
Oijiro dodged the ice with his tail, "You froze me in place once before, it won't happen again."
Tokoyami used Dark Shadow to fly over the ice.
Mina used her acid to slide across the ice, "Close one!"
Other students, including Izuku, were having trouble running on the ice.
Ochaco mumbled, "Gotta wait for the right time to show off my Quirk."
Shinso was being carried by several students, all of them having a dazed look in their eyes. "So, they're good at using their powers, huh?"
Shoto looked behind him, "I didn't expect so many people to dodge that. Maybe only Fenton. Especially those from other classes."
Suddenly robots appeared out of nowhere, "Targets acquired. Terminate them!"
Izuku realized, "It's those robots from the entrance exam!"
Danny sighed, "These things, again?"
Present Mic narrated, "Oh, enemies have shown up out of nowhere. I bet we're in for a treat here! A test of strength and cunning! It's a Robo Inferno!"
Shoto had stopped right in front of the robots. Kaninari shouted, "Are those the zero point villains from the practical test?"
Shoto noted, "So this is what the other students faced in their entrance exams."
"Where's the school even get the funding for these things?" Momo asked.
The robots charged at the students, while Shoto activated his ice half, "They obviously went through a lot of trouble, but I wish they'd prepared something a little more difficult. Especially since my dear old dad is watching."
He unleashed a huge ice attack, freezing the robots in place. He then ran through the legs.
Other students tried to follow him, but Shoto shouted back, "Careful, now. I froze them while they were off balance. On purpose."
The robots collapsed in front of the other students while Shoto ran ahead. Danny just phased through the wreckage and shouted, "Real smooth, Shoto."
Shoto groaned, "Of course that didn't phase you."
Present Mic narrated, "That's Todoroki from Class 1-A pulling ahead with Fenton flying very close behind him. They have an early lead with Todoroki giving such a devastating display! Amazing! He's one to watch. It almost seems unfair! Thoughts?"
Aizawa said, "His attacks were both offensive and defensive."
"No wonder he was let in on recommendations!" Present Mic narrated.
Aizawa continued, "But Fenton wasn't phased by it, literally. He can fly fast enough to keep up and phase through anything that is in his way. He does have similar destructive power like Todoroki, but chose not to engage the robots."
"No wonder he got first place in the practical exam!" Present Mic shouted.
Jazz smiled at her TV, "That's my little brother."
More robots advanced on the remaining students.
Izuku's mom shouted at her TV, "No, you can't beat those, son. Get outta there! Please, just run away for me, baby!"
Izuku looked up at the robots, "I have to get past these robots, while looking out for other obstacles. Come on! Think! What do I do?"
Chapter 3: In Their Own Quirky Ways
Shoto and Danny kept a good lead over the other students. The robots still crowded them as some students saw the fallen frozen robot start to move, making others worry that someone was trapped underneath it.
But then Kirishima burst out from the robot shouting, "I'm alive!" He had used his Hardening Quirk to survive being crushed by the robot.
"Kirishima from Class 1-A!" Present Mic narrated. "What a hardcore debut for this rookie!"
Kirishima growled, "Todoroki, I can't believe you pulled something like that. Jeez. Anyone but me woulda been killed!"
Suddenly Tetsutetsu burst out next to Kirishima, having used his Steel Quirk, "Class 1-A really is full of jerks! I'll smash that ice guy when I get my hands on him."
Present Mic narrated, "Tetsutetsu from Class 1-B was also stuck underneath! What are the odds?"
Tetsutetsu commented, "Ya know, anyone other than me woulda been killed."
Kirishima started to run the track, while crying, "Our Quirks are basically the same! How am I supposed to stand out now?"
Tetsutetsu started running too, "You damn copycat!"
Kaminari sighed, "Man, how lucky are they? They don't have to worry about being crushed."
Bakugo then blasted his way up to the top of the robot, "No way am I letting Todoroki and Fenton beat me."
Present Mic narrated, "Class 1-A's Bakugo is rocketing over the obstacles! Clever!"
Sero used his arm tape to get to the top of the robots too, "I figured you'd just try to blast your way through these things with your Quirk. I'm impressed."
Tokoyami flew over them, "I'll hitch a ride on my shadow."
They all got through the robots and ran to catch up to Todoroki, Danny, Kirishima, and Tetsutetsu.
Over where the UA teachers were sitting, Snipe commented, "Looks like all the pack leaders are from Class 1-A. At least for now."
All Might said, "It's not that 1-B and the other students are doing poorly. It's just…"
Aizawa seemed to be thinking the same thing, "Class 1-A's learned not to hesitate."
More of Class 1-A used their Quirks to get past the robots, Tenya with his engines, Jiro with her earjacks, Oijiro with his tail, Ochaco floating the robots above her, and Kaminari with his electricity.
Aizawa continued, "They've seen what the real world is like. They've felt the fear of facing villains. Yet they fight on, trying to overcome that 've grown. All of them. And they know that they have to act quickly if they want to stay alive." He looked at the monitor that showed Danny flying alongside Todoroki, "Although, he seems to have learned that before coming here."
Izuku whispered, "I can't rely on One For All this early in the competition." He dodged a robot's attack, then noticed something on the ground, "A piece of the robot that Todoroki knocked down." He picked it up and kept running, "This thing won't let up. It must have me targeted. It's moving so quickly. Which means it can't stop fast. Or avoid an attack." He swung the piece at the robot, damaging it. Izuku turned, "Run! Keep going! I'll keep this and use it as a shield if I need to. Perfect."
Momo created a cannon that blasted the other robots away, "A piece of cake."
She started to run along with the other students, now that a path was cleared.
Izuku noted, "Wow, she beat a zero pointer so easily! No wonder she got in on recommendations."
Back at the teacher's box, Snipe commented, "You're better off dodging those big fellas most of the time. But if you gotta take them down, they're just slow, dumb hunks of metal, pretty easy to hit. As long as you land a smart shot, that is.
All Might thought, "I've asked so much of you, Young Midoriya. You don't have to come in first. Just get to the next round. As for Young Fenton, he's staying neck and neck with Todoroki, not racing ahead of him like I know he can. He's not trying to dominate this competition."
Present Mic narrated, "For those of you who thought the first obstacle was easy. Let's see how ya feel about the second one! If they take a spill, they're out. If they want to pass this test, they'll have to get creative. It's 'The Fall'"
He was referring to a canyon that had stepping stones with ropes connecting to each one.
Danny just floated over them, "Easy for me. Let's see how everyone does."
Aizawa noticed Danny slowing his speed and looking back at the other students. He was surprised at the ghost boy's actions.
Ochaco commented, "When did they even have time to build something like this?"
Tsuyu walked past Ochaco and Mina, who asked, "What are you doing?"
Tsuyu just hopped onto one of the ropes, using her frog hands and feet to cross easily, "This is my moment. Easy peasy."
"She's fast," Mina commented.
They heard a chuckle behind them. They turned to see a girl from one of the support classes, Hatsume, the one wearing strange goggles and machine parts, said, "Yes, finally. This is my chance to show off what I can do. My support items are gonna steal the spotlight from these wannabe heroes. Everyone! Observe what my brilliant gadgets can do! Wire arrows and hover soles!"
Ochaco realized, "You're from support!"
"Hey," Mina complained. "How come you got to bring all that stuff?"
Hatsume giggled, "Students in the hero course get all kinds of combat training for their Quirks. In order to keep things fair and give us a fighting chance, we're allowed to bring whatever gadgets and costumes we want into the games, so long as we developed them ourselves. So, sit back and enjoy the show." She fired off two of her wire arrows, "For those of us in the support course, this is the perfect obstacle to show off our ingenious ideas and creations to any companies out there who might want to recruit us. I hope employers are watching!" She jumped off, activating her soles, "My super cute little babies are sure to make a splash!" She made it to the other side.
Ochaco said, "Wow. Talk about annoying. I won't lose."
Mina shouted, "Ush, this is so unfair!"
Shinso huffed, "Interesting. Heh."
Danny whistled, "Now that's showing off." Danny noticed Shoto make it to the end and he started flying near him.
Present Mic narrated, "In the world of heroes, it can be hard to get popular without a flashy Quirk. Right, Eraser Head?"
Aizawa growled, "I don't know what you're talking about, idiot."
Present Mic narrated, "Looks like Todoroki is still skating by easily."
Shoto looked next to him and noticed Danny, "He's been next to me for almost this entire time. Is he toying with me?" He looked behind him and saw Bakugo, "He's finally getting fired up. It took him long enough."
"You both suck!" Bakugo shouted at Shoto and Danny as he was flying using his Quirk.
Tenya made it to the start of the second obstacle, "My older brother's probably watching this. I can't let him see me look foolish. I've got this."
He used his Quirk to hover glide across the ropes, as Present Mic narrated, "Boy does he look foolish."
People in the audience were commenting on Shoto, some realizing that he is the son of Endeavor, the number 2 hero behind All Might. Others were talking about Danny and how he's making this course look easy by just flying/phasing through everything.
Present Mic narrated, "The leaders are putting distance between him and the students stuck at The Fall! It hasn't been announced how many competitors will make it through the next round, no there's no time to relax."
Izuku's mom was cheering her son on from her couch, "Come on, Izuku."
Shoto and Danny approached the final obstacle. Present Mic narrated, "And now, we're finally approaching the last obstacle. Everyone had better tread carefully. You're stepping onto a minefield! If you look carefully, you can see where those little bombs are buried, so keep your eyes on the ground, folks. By the way, those mines were designed for the games, so they might be loud and flashy, but they're not all that powerful. Just enough to make you wet your pants!"
Aizawa groaned, "Get a hold of yourself."
Danny sighed, "He may say that, but these games really are dangerous for those who aren't prepared."
Back where Izuku was, he said, "Someone's already made it to the final obstacle? Faster, I can do this."
Shoto was carefully watching his step while Danny just floated above them. Present Mic narrated, "Looks like this is a walk in the park for Fenton, he can just fly on by."
Other students were stepping on them and flying up into the air, causing a pink dust to appear as the explosion.
"Very clever," Shoto said. "Those in the lead are at a disadvantage here. Except for Fenton. Guess it makes for good entertainment."
Bakugo came blasting in, "Ha! It's over." He flew past Shoto and Danny, "You icy-hot bastard. Your declaration of way was to the wrong person. And Fenton, you better catch up!"
Present Mic narrated, "Just like that, a new student takes the lead! The media here is going crazy! There's nothing they love more than an upset!"
Danny chuckled, "I'm not letting that punk win." He sped up his flying a little so that he was next to Bakugo.
Present Mic narrated, "Hey, hey, hey! The rest of the competitors are catching up, too!"
Bakugo tried blasting Danny, but he just turned intangible. So he mainly focused on Shoto.
Present Mic narrated, "What's this? Can two of our leaders fight each other and stay in front of the competition?"
Izuku made it to the final obstacle and saw where the leaders were, "Crap. They're so far ahead. Danny's probably with them too. No, this isn't over! Thanks for the idea, Kacchan!" Izuku used the shield he was carrying and jumped onto several mines, causing a huge explosion.
Present Mic narrated, "What's with that huge explosion in the back? That was way more powerful than it should be!"
The explosion sent Izuku flying through the air, towards the leaders.
All Might saw this, and jumped up with joy, "Yes!"
"Incredible!" Present Mic narrated. "What just happened? Whatever the case, Class 1-A's Izuku Midoriya is suddenly in hot pursuit of first place. Strike that, the lead is his!"
Everyone stopped and watched as Izuku flew over the minefield and past the leaders. Danny smiled, "Way to go, Izuku."
Izuku kept flying, "I flew over them just like I planned. But there was more force than I expected. And I didn't think about how I would land!"
Danny flew after him, "Hopefully he'll land easily."
Bakugo went blasting towards Izuku, "Deku! What the hell do you think you're doing, huh?"
Shoto started creating an ice path as he ran to catch up, "This ice path will end up helping others. But there's no time to worry about them!"
Present Mic narrated, "Look at that plot twist! Those two aren't fighting anymore! And Fenton is gaining speed to catch up. In fact, they all are! That's what having a common enemy will do in this competition. This fight is still far from over, though."
Izuku started to panic, "Oh, no. I'm losing speed. This is bad. They'll get ahead of me again. If I don't time this landing right, there's no way I'll be able to keep the lead. I just have to hold on and keep going. I have a chance here. I have to reach out and take it. The only way to stay ahead is to take another leap. I have to take them out of the running. I can show the world who I am!" Izuku was right next to Shoto and Bakugo, and slammed the shield down, causing more mines to explode, Shoto and Bakugo getting caught in the blast. Not Danny as obviously he was flying. He did stay intangible so that the blast wouldn't affect him.
Izuku tumbled and started to run as Present Mic narrated, "In a stunning move, Midoriya has blasted past his classmates from 1-A! I don't believe it! He cleared that minefield in an instant!"
Danny turned visible and blasted Shoto and Bakugo with an ecto blast to keep them down for a few more seconds, then turned to fly after Izuku.
Shoto and Bakugo got up and started running towards the finish line.
Present Mic narrated, "Eraser Head, your students are amazing! What the heck are you teaching them?"
Aizawa commented, "This has nothing to do with me. Each of them is powered by their own drive to succeed."
"There you have it," Present Mic narrated. "Eraser Head is a terrible teacher!"
"I'm what?" Aizawa asked.
Present Mic narrated, "Who would have imagined at the beginning of this race that the climax would be a non-stop mega-mix of surprises? The first to make it back to the stadium is the first place winner!"
Izuku, Danny, Shoto, and Bakugo were all nearing the finish line. But Izuku was the first person to cross the finish line, Danny right behind him in second, Shoto takes 3rd, and Katsuki gets 4th place.
"Izuku Midoriya is our champion!" Present Mic shouted. The audience erupted into applause and chaos.
Izuku's mom cried from her couch, "Oh, my baby Izuku!"
Death Arms was standing next to Kamui Woods as he looked up at the results screen, "Hey, it's that kid."
Kamui Woods commented, "Oh, yeah! He fought the sludge monster."
Elsewhere, Tomura Shigaraki was watching the games and saw Izuku, "It's that brat again. And that other brat is there too."
Izuku took some deep breaths as he looked around the stadium as the audience cheered him on. He found All Might, who was clapping and smiling at him. Izuku nodded back and started to tear up.
All Might thought, "This sports festival is a competition where everyone aims for the top. Even though that means defeating your friends and classmates. And for professional heroes, popularity plays a huge part in their careers, so they have to want to be the best. It's a bloodthirsty world. At your core, you want to help others. That's why I chose you, Young Midoriya. But in all honesty, I thought your selflessness could be your weakness. Turns out, I was worried over nothing! You are a fighter! Still, maybe cool it with the waterworks. As for Young Fenton, he has the same selflessness as Mirdoriya, probably even more, and he showed that the obstacle course was easy peasy for him. He could have easily caught up to Midoriya, but he probably was so amazed by Mirdoriya's performance that he chose to come in second. As he still wants his classmates to shine over himself."
Katsuki growled, "Deku, no way. Not again."
Present Mic narrated, "The contestants are pouring in one after the other! Let's hear some applause for all our competitors as we prepare the results!"
Ochaco ran over to Izuku, "Deku! That was amazing!"
"Oh, thank you," Izuku replied.
Danny walked over, "Seriously, Dude, you earned it."
Izuku said, "You could've easily taken first place, even passed me. Why didn't you?"
Danny shrugged, "Like All Might suggested, I didn't go all out. Plus, you amazed me so much that you earned this spot. So I didn't want to take it away from you. We're both still getting into the next round anyway."
Izuku sighed, "Yeah, but my real ability will get tested after this. What comes next?"
Momo came panting in, Danny saw her and ran over, "Hey, Momo. Are you OK?"
Momo nodded, "Yeah, just happy that I got among the top of the students."
Midnight announced, "The first game of the first years is finally over, and what a game it was! Now, let's take a quick look at the standings, shall we?"
All of Class 1-A got into the top, with Aoyama being the worst at 42nd place. Momo got 17th place, Tenya got 6th, and Ochaco got 16th place.
Midnight announced, "Only the top 42 will advance to the next round. But don't be too let down if you didn't make the cut. We've prepared other opportunities for you to shine. Now the real fun is about to begin. The chance to fully move yourselves into the spotlight. Give it your best! Let's see what we have in store for you next. Will your wildest fantasies come to life? What could it be? The wait is torture. Prepare yourselves for this! Calvary battle!"
"Calvary battle?" Kaminari said. "I'm terrible at those."
"Huh, it's not an individual event," Tsuyu commented. "I wonder how they'll split us up."
"Allow me to explain," Midnight announced. "The participants will form teams of two to four people as they see fit. In theory, it's basically the same as a regular playground game. But there is one difference. Each player has been assigned a point value based on the results of the obstacle course."
"I get it," Sato said. "A point based system like the practical exams. That seems pretty simple."
Ochaco added, "So that means each team will have a different point value based on which students are in it."
Midnight growled, "Maybe you should shut up and let me explain things to you." She then cleared her throat, "Now then. The point assignments go up in increments of five, starting from the bottom. For example, 42nd place is worth 5 points, and 41st is worth 10. And the point value that is assigned to the first place contestant is ten million!"
Izuku suddenly felt that all eyes were on him. Danny felt pity for his friend.
Midnight smiled, "That's right. It's survival of the fittest, with a chance for those at the bottom to overthrow the top!"
