Monday:
It was a normal day. As always, Zane just sat at his bench in class, not paying attention to the teacher at all. He gets distracted easily and finds classes boring. He doesn't do well because he simply doesn't care. He just goes to school because the system forces him to. The teacher takes notice of his distracted state but chooses to ignore him.
She doesn't get paid nearly enough to care about some poor kid. The wealthy parents always give her a bribe to ensure she takes special care of their kids. Not that it matters because she gives them extra marks anyway to pass them with better grades. His friend, James, taps his shoulder. The bell already rang, but Zane took no notice. He was far away in his thoughts. Zane looks at his friend and starts to pack his bag and walks off to the next class.
"So what's our next class?" Zane asks James. James answers, barely containing his laughter, "I don't know where you're supposed to go, but I got IT now."
Zane thinks for a moment, realizing he's in biology. "Nevermind, I remember now. See you after school behind the tree?" James nods his head in agreement as he runs to his class.
Zane goes to sit down in biology. He is seated near the entrance, third seat from the front, right in the middle. He sits and wonders what today's lecture will be about. This is the only subject he pays some attention to after all. His favorite subject: Biology.
A lot of students hate this subject, but Zane is different. He absolutely adores it. He waits for the teacher to enter the classroom. She doesn't seem to be at school yet. That's a little odd. She's usually quite early.
Zane takes out a book and continues to read where the bookmark is. All the other kids start celebrating silently because they now have a free period to waste. Suddenly, everyone becomes wary. They hear a screech in the distance. Then they hear a scream from a male voice. It sounded like someone was in a lot of pain before the scream got cut short...
Everyone looks around to try and find the source of this sound, but no one does. It definitely came from within the school, but where and why? Zane is confused. He continues to look for the source even when everyone else stops. It bothers him a lot, but why? Why does he feel so tense all of a sudden?
Zane spots something in the distance. He can't quite make out what it is. He also doesn't want to find out since it seems to be extremely fast. He goes to hide in the classroom, looking out the window. He sees a few kids follow him. The kids standing outside look a little confused before seeing the thing running on the football field. It ran across the entire football field in 10 seconds. By the time those outside realized what was going on, it was far too late. The huge thing dug its claws into their fragile bodies and tore them apart.
Most of the kids looked away when this happened, and some threw up. Zane wasn't bothered by it in the slightest. He tries to make out what the monstrosity in front of him is. He makes sure it can't see him. It looks like a gorilla with tiger legs and eagle-like wings. But how? For one, how are they mixed when those three animals live on different continents? And secondly, how are they mixed? There shouldn't be any way to do that yet. Not with our current technology unless someone made a breakthrough. But wouldn't it appear in the news then? Well, yes, it would unless this thing escaped before it could be on the news...
Zane keeps on thinking of why this amalgamation is here and how he should act now, wondering whether there is anything he could do to save himself. Then he sees his solution: the kids. The ones who ran into the classroom with him. He sees most of them having a horrified expression. He doesn't know how he will be able to comfort them without having a disgusted look. He truly hates it but he needs them right now. They are his safety for now. Or well till he finds better and stronger meat shields at least.
He walks over to them and tries to comfort them with words of encouragement while stroking across their backs. This is more than he bargained for.
"Keep your face together. Don't have a weird expression. Remember that these will be useful kids. They are your safety if that thing enters the class. Look determined so they think you are a hero. So that they start trusting you." Zane consciously has to remind himself to keep his face together. He doesn't want to lose such precious meat shields after all.
The creature outside finishes tearing the bodies to pieces. It doesn't eat them though. Zane makes the assumption it's killing for fun. It's not killing to eat. Zane looks to the distressed students. "They will need a leader and if I become that leader they will all listen to me," Zane thinks to himself.
He goes to the far back end of the class as soon as the monster disappears. He speaks from his diaphragm so everyone can hear him. He uses a soothing voice.
"EVERYONE," he starts, "listen to me closely. We all saw that thing. I know we are all afraid. But staying in this class will make us an easier target if it enters here. We won't be able to run then. I propose we go outside and stay hidden." He heard them becoming restless at the thought of going outside where that thing just tore through their friends.
He thinks a little to himself and comes up with an idea.
"Think of it this way. We are chickens. That thing is a fox. If we stay cooped up in here, it will come back. We don't know what it is or what it can do. The longer we wait, the higher the risk of it coming back. If a fox is in a chicken coop, ALL the chickens die. So those who don't want to die here form a line at the door. We will exit the class quietly."
Zane almost smiles as he sees all of them naively follow his command. They are all puppets now. The strings are still thin but he will make them stronger. So strong that none can escape. He goes to the front of the line. He sticks his head out and looks everywhere for the monster. Of course, he doesn't want to since it puts him in danger but to appear as a hero he has to do this. People tend to listen to their saviors after all. The ones leading them. Even if it's down the wrong path...
