Yna's pov
I took in a deep breath. Hoping it would calm me down while I waited for Mom and Leigh. Today was the day of the appointment. Thinking about it was making me sick.
It had all been planned out perfectly. Every detail flawlessly laid out.
A spa day, hair day, and a total transformation.
Except I think, I'm fine just as I am.
Leigh was whistling as she climbed down the stairs and it was lovely to see her bright aura once again. I could count the slow progress since a year ago. She looked at me with disgust and I could already hear her words before she voiced them.
"You have a horrible sense of fashion, it's a good thing we're going shopping. I also miss your blonde hair"
Now that she talked about it, the only reason I dyed it brown in the first place was because I felt inferior in it. She had blonde hair, blue eyes and round lips.Compared to my blonde hair, brown eyes combo tha I hated, she was a goddess.
I smiled a little, not wanting to voice out my insecurities.
We saw Mom in a dainty black dress slowly descending the stairs. She looked ready for the paparazzi. Leighla and I exchanged a look and briefly glanced down at our plain jeans and tops.
Then again, she has always been like that. The kind of person that will wear a diamond necklace to a mall.
Smiling a little, we both followed her as she made her way to the car, calling for Lucien, the driver with a shrill voice.
After what felt like forever and uncomfortable silence, we jumped out of the car and into a building. It was a beauty complex and I'm thinking Mom reserved the entire place because there was no one else other than the staff present.
Another horrible use of money, I thought to myself. We had a spay day and put some color in our hair. Leighla thought it was time to go brunette while I swapped mine for my natural blonde look. It was ironic and one for the books.
I smiled a little at my inner thought. For nail colors, I subtle pink, Mom went with a bold red and Leigh settled for an ivory and brown chess design. Then it was time to go shopping for some new clothes. Ofcourse, I had to get rid of my office clothes now because I was getting married and I wouldn't be able to work as a secretary anymore.
I also needed dresses for I and Serial's dates. Ironically, we still hadn't met in person. I picked out a few pieces, nothing too extravagant. As was family tradition, we each had to pick one dress for the other. Mom grabbed a red dress with a halter strap neckline and cut outs on the front. I was convinced that if I ever wore it, my breasts would spill out of it because the neckline was deep and plunging. Leighla grabbed a mint green dress with sweetheart neckline which I loved. It also came with a fur coat and little shawl that I could also tie as a waist belt. Only thing was it was high slight, asymmetrical and runched at my upper thigh. One wrong move and my underwear would be on full display.
A really bold choice. It made me question whether I knew Leighla anymore. I smiled faintly.
For my choices, I picked a royal blue off the shoulder dress with pearls sown intricately over it. It was ruffled and looked regal. For mom I picked a black evening gown with a asymmetrical neckline. It had zippers on the side to turn it into a high slit.
Once we were all done picking jewelry to match, and a few purses, we headed out to lunch. I was already tired and desperate to leave anyway. Lunch was at a famous restaurant. She had reserved a spot on the third floor just for us. High quality steak, expensive wine and a place to catch the paparazzi. Another horrible use of money, honestly.
It was a quiet lunch which I was grateful for. I ordered a simple salad with some shrimps and oysters. Nothing too over the top like Mom's steak or Leigh's pasta. I was glad we barely talked because I was sure I'd lose my appetite at any initiation of a conversation with Mom.
"So Yna, have you thought about how you'd like to re-introduce yourself to society?" She asked right as I finished my thought on conversations.
I cleared my throat. And took a sip of pineapple juice.
"Not really, I was hoping I'd get a few days to clear my desk and hand over my work as a secretary and then maybe invite one of my old friends to lunch and have the paparazzi spread photos".
It was quick thinking, I applauded myself for that but honestly it was also dumb because I had no friends.
She smiled briefly, although I wasn't sure if it was genuine, I acknowledged the effort.
"That sounds pretty good". A first positive compliment from her.
"Uh, thanks", I responded briefly
"How soon do you think you can get that stuff sorted at the office?", she continued to pry.
"Might take a few weeks maybe", I said softly.
She nodded slowly and then didn't say another word. Thankfully we enjoyed the rest of our lunch in silence, paid the bill and made our way out of the restaurant.
Just as we stepped out, there were a few flashes that caught us off guard. Lucky, I had my hair down, and contacts in because the lights would have completely blinded me if I was in my glasses. I intentionally kept my head down and managed to slip quickly into our waiting vehicle. They circled the car briefly with the continuous shutter noises and flashes. Just as we drove away, I heard some say something.
"This is a big scoop!"
Just like that, I took a deep breath. The reality and weight of how my world was about to change seeping into my bones. At that moment, I felt a hand on my shoulder, Leighla. She smiled with those beautiful orbs and said
"Give Serial and this marriage a chance. It could be everything you believe in and more. You might find true love like you've always craved"
