Chapter 53 - Fresh Start (1)

"Good morning everyone. I hope you all had a good night." Trinity speaks to the group who has gathered at her request. Most look detached from the moment, making it obvious that they are there by command, not choice. It's disheartening for Trinity, but she pushes through it. "I'm aware that many of you may be disappointed by my lack of decisiveness last night, and I can understand why you all may be unenthusiastic about standing before me now. I've since spent significant time reflecting, and I realized I've been going about this all wrong. So I'll change it."

Suddenly, all the previously disinterested eyes shift to her. She's managed to grab their attention. However, only one speaks up. "Interesting." Morigain steps forward. "So, what will you do?"

"For starters, I'm going to ask Symone to reconsider the blueprints for this dormitory. Someone told me that while they were grateful for their room, they didn't really feel 'at home' in it. It may be grand, but it's not 'them'. I reflected on this and realized that if 'm going to ask you all to leave your previous homes and reside primarily here, your personal spaces should reflect you."

"Wait, so are you going to allow us to redecorate our rooms?" Helaine asks with excitement.

Trinity smiles. "Not just redecorate. I'm going to ask Symone to allow everyone to completely redesign their rooms to their liking structurally, and once it's finished, you can decorate freely."

"Sweet! I already know what I'm going to do with it! I hope Symone doesn't have a budget…."

"Remodeling…is that all? Perhaps it is a great deal for children, but a room is a room. Big deal."

"That's only the first thing, there's more." Trinity quickly replies. "Next, I'm going to request that Symone split my salary with you all; meaning it should be split ten ways. Our mental health facility will be a free service for incoming sinners or current residents who need it, so we'll get no income from it. However, Symone agreed to pay me a salary for acting as the director. It wouldn't be fair for me to ask you guys to work in the facility without pay, even if you do have free room and board. You still deserve personal funds for your time and efforts. So even if I have to take less, then so be it. I don't want to be given special privileges at the expense of you all."

"That's very generous Trinity, but don't you have a treasury? You're the ruler of this domain."

"You're right Nyxis, there is a treasury. However, there's no money in it. That's the reason Symone offered to pay me actually. As Death Sinner Queen, I should have a treasury that I could use for domain expenses, and could've easily paid your salaries from it considering the taxes the residents had been paying over so many years. Unfortunately, as I was not the first to succeed my mother in this role, I'm afraid it was all squandered by the man who was. My father exploited the funds for his shady business deals and personal desires, leaving behind only an empty vault."

"Damn, sounds like we need some funds then." Nyxis smiles slyly. "I may have some ideas…."

"I appreciate it Nyxis, let's talk about them later. Let's try keeping the ideas ethical though, ok?" She nods, and it's easy to see the gears starting to turn in her head as she ponders all possibilities.

"Great, so we won't be mere slaves then. Basic sinner rights are good. Anything else to offer?"

Trinity rubs her head with a chuckle. "You really are a tough woman to please Morigain." Her amused grin quickly transforms into a serious one. "That said, I do have something more, and it may be the most important announcement of all." She steps forward and approaches Morigain. "If you would be willing, I'd like to ask you to become the official leader of the Death Knights."

Morigain raises a brow. "Oh? Now this was unexpected. However, I can't do your job for you."

"You won't be." Trinity speaks with a sharp tone that even Morigain can't disregard. Trinity takes another step towards her, their chests nearly pressing together. She stares directly into her eyes. "Make no mistake, you will still answer to me and will not be permitted to act outside my granted limits. However, I also acknowledge that you are wiser in the matters of diplomacy and battle tactics. These foundations must be strong if we are going to face the incoming threats. I need a competent and powerful leader who can negotiate effectively, or battle efficiently when necessary. You will lead the others with your wisdom and position the Death Knights as Elites."

"Hmm, so I'd be the general of your army then? I'm honored, but why not miss grumpy bones?"

Trinity follows her finger as it points towards Seleyna, who leans against a wall as typical of her. Realizing their eyes are now on her, she stands straight and with a frown says, "Fuck off bitch."

This doesn't bring Morigain to anger, but rather amusement. She laughs. "Yes, as I expected."

Trinity rubs her head nervously now. "I have another proposal to offer her, but this is yours."

Morigain takes a moment to ponder, and the room remains silent. Everyone waits for her reply with anticipation. She stares into Trinity's eyes once again, and firmly says, "I humbly accept." Trinity offers her a hand and Morigain accepts it. For the first time, they appear to be aligned.

"So, Lady Morigain will be our General, but you'll still be our Commander, right?" Azura asks.

"That's correct. I'll still dictate the overall direction, but Morigain will lead you on the ground." She nods, seemingly satisfied. "To that point, is everyone ok with this decision? Please speak."

"I think I can speak for everyone in saying we really don't care either way. We're all used to surviving however we can no matter who leads us. Though I will say, knowing that Morigain will be the one we directly report to is reassuring. Forgive my bluntness, but it's hard for me to see you as an authoritative figure. You're an adorable child playing as Queen in my old eyes."

"I respect your honesty Seraphine, and it's fair criticism. I'm also glad we can rely on Morigain to lead this team. However, I want to be clear, I'm not offsetting all my duties to her. I intend to do what I must to improve as Death Sinner Queen and return order to this domain. Morigain leading the team will allow me to focus on Queen duties, and my role as Director of the facility."

"We have faith in you Miss Trinity. We're willing to assist in any way we can." Ravenna says.

She nudges the moody blonde to her right, and finally Eirys says, "Yes, you can count on us."

"You know I'm all in with whatever you do boss!" She runs over and hugs her. "Do I get a cool role too?" She nuzzles into her chest and sways like a pup wagging its tail. Trinity pats her head.

"Of course Sinae, you will have the most important job actually. Will you be my bodyguard?"

Her eyes instantly light up, almost sparkling, as she hops happily and shouts, "Yes Boss, I will!"

"Well, no surprise there." Morigain manages a thin smile. "Though to be fair, she's the best fit."

"Agreed." Seraphine says with a yawn. "So, are we done here? I need to rest up for fun tonight."

"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to hold you long. You're all are free to go about your day now." They collectively nod and soon the crowd disperses, leaving only Sinae and Seleyna present. She looks nervously at Seleyna, but hesitates to speak. Finally, she says, "So, about your role. I'd like to-."

"Meet me at the training ground at dawn from tomorrow…we have much work to do with you."
