Chapter 166: The Peerless Beauty Moved In
Zhang Yang's head plunged straight into Yang Fei's snowy cleavage. Before he could even savor that intoxicating moment, a loud bang erupted, followed by the sound of shattering glass, and then the eerie, chaotic ringing of wind chimes.
Gunfire! The bullet pierced through the window, whizzing past where Zhang Yang and Yang Fei had just been sitting, and struck a string of wind chimes hanging beside the bed.
Two more shots followed, but this time Zhang Yang, already reacting, rolled off the bed with Yang Fei in his arms, aimed the gun at the window, and quickly fired two return shots.
A shadow flashed past the window and disappeared outside. Zhang Yang guessed he hadn't hit the target, but once the assailant saw he had a gun, they retreated immediately.
Still, Zhang Yang didn't dare let his guard down. His eyes stayed locked on the window. Yang Fei was pinned beneath him, and he could clearly feel her trembling lightly, her soft, delicate body pressed against him.
Zhang Yang quickly shifted off her and gestured for her to move behind the bed. That was a blind spot from the window—a relatively safe position.
Time passed, second by second. The window remained silent, but Zhang Yang couldn't be sure the killer had left. He didn't dare move or make any unnecessary sound.
He broke into a cold sweat. Without the system's Danger Warning now, if not for Yang Fei's push and embrace just now, he would've already been a corpse.
About three or four minutes later, he heard the sharp sound of police sirens outside. Zhang Yang finally exhaled a breath of relief. The danger was likely over—at least for now.
Still, he didn't dare stand up casually. Often, it was at moments like these that carelessness killed. If that assassin decided to go all in, the unlucky one would be him.
Thankfully, his worries didn't come true. Within four minutes, he heard footsteps—police were upstairs.
When the police arrived—
They surveyed the scene, unable to hide their shock. Zhang Yang had gone overboard—too ruthless. Two assassins, both dead.
One was shot straight through the head.
Another took a bullet to the chest. What surprised Zhang Yang was that a third corpse was found at the dormitory staircase—the man's neck had been hit by a ricochet.
The targets survived unharmed, while all three killers were dead. That was insane.
If not for the dorm's security cameras, and Qiao Xier immediately informing Xia Qingguo upon hearing Zhang Yang had been attacked again—
Xia Qingguo had instantly called the Yuetian District Police Bureau to inquire and check on Zhang Yang's condition. Otherwise, Zhang Yang might've been detained as a murder suspect.
Three lives lost—one side completely annihilated—and Zhang Yang only had a few cuts from the broken vase.
The identities of the three assassins were quickly confirmed. All were wanted fugitives with multiple murders on record. One of them was Spade Eight's eighth member, nicknamed Black-Eight Kui.
Even so, Zhang Yang and Yang Fei spent the entire night giving statements before being released. It was already past 5 a.m. when they came out, with Qiao Xier waiting in her car at the gate.
Yang Fei's current residence was no longer safe, but she didn't want to go back to the Yang family villa either.
Zhang Yang thought for a moment and told Qiao Xier to head back first. Then he took a cab with Yang Fei to retrieve some essentials from the crime scene. Though sealed off, the police let them in briefly.
Yang Fei had two or three properties in Meining. Two were rented out, and one she used for herself. Lately, she'd been living near the school, and she wanted to return there. But Zhang Yang immediately vetoed that idea. "Teacher, if you don't mind, stay at my place."
After tonight, Zhang Yang couldn't be sure there were only three assassins. If they had already seen Yang Fei's face and made her their target, it was dangerous. For her safety, keeping her close was the best option.
Yang Fei hesitated but neither agreed nor refused. When Zhang Yang went to pack up her essentials, she didn't stop him—and even helped.
"Forget those bookshelves, those slippers too, the TV's no good, the computer... fine, bring that one." She seemed a bit of a neat freak. Aside from her clothes, books, and personal items, she told Zhang Yang to donate most of the rest.
In the end, Yang Fei silently moved into Villa 501—on the fifth floor.
The repeated assassination attempts made Zhang Yang extremely vigilant. With the system's Three Danger Warnings already used up, he no longer had that strange sense of security. Before, the system would warn him in advance of life-threatening danger. Now, he was blind.
Spade Eight had failed twice in a row. They wouldn't let it go. If anything, they'd only escalate. Zhang Yang couldn't just sit and wait—he needed to do something first: upgrade the villa's security.
Right now, his and the beauties' safety was top priority. Both attacks had happened outside, and the villa was near a military base—previously making it relatively safe. But after two failures, his enemies might target the villa directly next.
So he had to enhance the villa's defenses. It was already quite secure, but that was only against ordinary criminals. Spade Eight's organization had silencers—who knew if they'd bring sniper rifles next?
To stay safe, he had to keep upgrading his defenses.
After thinking for a while, he decided to ask the system for help. After all, he had 148 points now.
"How can I completely eliminate Spade Eight?"
The System Assistant paused briefly before replying, [This answer requires 520 system points. Your points and access level are insufficient. The system refuses to provide an answer.]
520 points?! Damn! Zhang Yang broke into a cold sweat. Just how powerful was Spade Eight if it required that many points? And his level wasn't even high enough?
"Fine then. How can I avoid being killed by Spade Eight's people?"
[This question requires 8 system points. Does the system host accept.] the System Assistant muttered softly.
"Fine, accepted!" Eight points was nothing. Ideally, he'd eliminate the threat, but if not, avoiding death was still good. Eight points was cheap—he still had 140 left afterward.
[8 system points deducted. Your current balance: 140 points…]
[8 system points deducted. Your current balance: 140 points…]
[Based on your current level and capabilities, the system recommends the following: First, spend 60 points to purchase three Life Danger Warnings. Second, upgrade the villa's security. The current Nuwa Headquarters security level is 0.1. You can spend 50 points for a full renovation plan to raise it to level 1. ]
"Sixty points? Three Danger Warnings?" Zhang Yang spat. Back then, those three warnings were just an F-rank reward, and now they cost sixty? Nanxing One and Lingguang One only cost fifty! What a rip-off! It wasn't easy earning points, damn it—you're bleeding me dry!
Complaints aside, he didn't hesitate—he agreed immediately!
Sixty points for three lives—that's three extra chances to live. With life, he could always earn more points. Zhang Yang knew his priorities.
Plus, the best part was—he could buy this stuff with points! Hell yeah! As long as he kept earning, he'd be unstoppable.
Points were just hard to earn, and the high-tier rewards cost a ton. Eliminating Spade Eight needed 500+ points—that was ridiculous!
Still, maybe preventing the Apocalypse wasn't impossible after all.
[60 points deducted. Current balance: 80 points. You have gained three Life Danger Warnings. You now have three remaining. ]
Hearing that sweet female voice, Zhang Yang finally relaxed a little. Three warnings—three lives saved.
After the exhausting night, he was dead tired and wanted to nap. But then he remembered—the villa security upgrade cost 50 points.
Should he do it? He was safe for now, but what about the beauties living with him? If those bastards targeted them, it'd be bad.
Still, if he spent another 50 points, he'd only have 30 left. The mission to find the third Star Mender was still incomplete, and the F-rank mission to reconcile Yang Fei with her father was far from done. Those were his big point earners. If something urgent came up later, he'd be screwed.
But then again, the villa upgrade sounded tempting. Anything that cost 50 points had to be worth it.
So what if he lost 50 points? He'd just earn more later. Besides, he'd still have 30 left, and the system offered one emergency call per month as long as his score wasn't negative.
If the upgraded villa turned out amazing, it'd be worth every point—it could protect all those gorgeous girls inside. Totally worth it!
"Alright then, to defeat the enemy, I'll have to thicken my turtle shell first…" Zhang Yang thought. Whatever, he'd just work hard to find the third Star Mender and earn those points back.
