The grumble from Hirvan's stomach broke the quiet of the hospital room so loudly that it echoed against the sterile white walls. The sound was long, pitiful, and impossible to ignore.
Hirvan froze. His face heated instantly, a flush creeping up from his neck to his ears. The timing made it ten times worse, especially since he had been deliberately giving Lu Hanbing the cold shoulder ever since that out-of-line remark. He stared stiffly at the ceiling, jaw clenched, as if pretending nothing had happened might somehow erase the sound from existence.
Silence followed. No teasing. No amused remark. No smug comment.
Instead, there was the soft click of the door closing.
Hirvan blinked and turned his head. The space beside the bed was empty. Lu Hanbing was gone.
Part of him felt relieved, at least he didn't have to deal with Lu Hanbing's infuriating grin right now, but another part felt oddly unsettled.
