The morning came cool and grey, the sky overcast, the lake the colour of steel. Aaron woke to find Sophie already awake, lying on her side, watching him.
"How long have you been looking at me?" he asked, his voice rough with sleep.
"Long enough."
He turned toward her, the sheets rustling, and reached for her hand under the covers. Her fingers found his, threading through them. "What are you thinking about?"
She was quiet for a moment, her gaze shifting to somewhere beyond him, as though she was looking at something he could not see. "I've been thinking about what I want. Not what I should do. What I want."
"That sounds familiar."
