Chapter 408: Civilization and Barbarism
Crack! Crack! Crack!
Boom!
The towering six-armed golems lumbered to a corner of the city wall, standing motionless in standby mode.
Surrounding them, the modified sentinel golems and guardian golems stood tightly packed, silent and still.
Their hulking frames and the steel armor added through modifications exuded an aura of sheer dominance.
They bore no resemblance to the "amiable" constructs adventurers were used to seeing.
"Looks like the territory is pulling out all the stops!"
"Indeed. Just months ago, this was a mere village. Now, it has developed into something like this—it's surreal."
"Kobolds, murlocs, heavy infantry, and battle golems—the variety of means they employ is astonishing."
"Are these orcs really that strong?"
"Just look at Bay Territory's preparations."
"…"
While other adventurers didn't think much of it, the array of golems sparked everyone's curiosity.
Though few adventurers had experience battling golems, it didn't stop them from satisfying their curiosity.
Hearing that the goddess valued these golems, Mira observed the unusual constructs with keen interest.
"So many golems—how many are there in total?"
Sun Sheng made a quick count: just the six-armed golems numbered 40, with over 200 guardian and clay golems.
Bay Territory is loaded!
"Ah! We only have 500,000 gold coins left. We're going to be broke!"
Yaya's eyes flashed with resentment as she rolled around on a pile of gold coins.
Matthew also felt a twinge of pain but, seeing the 20 million points of Destiny Power, his eyes sparkled with anticipation as he comforted her:
"Don't worry. As long as we win, we'll earn it all back—and more!"
Destiny Power was sufficient!
Some modification data had also been sufficiently accumulated.
Now, all that remained were breakthroughs in extraordinary physical traits and research!
In this elite orc force, there were likely many high-ranking warlords with extraordinary specialties.
Once he collected the data, Matthew would have all the conditions needed for human body enhancement surgery!
Human soldiers must grow stronger!
First, their bodies!
Then, their souls!
This battle gained yet another reason for victory.
March 16th, noon.
Dark Forest.
Bull Fortress.
Clear skies.
The scorching sunlight beat down on the feasting orcs.
Accustomed to such intense heat, they greedily eyed the Dark Forest teeming with food and prey.
If they could settle here, they would live with great ease.
Of course, that hinged on one condition!
First, they had to win this war!
And establish a foothold in the Dark Forest!
A few hundred meters away in the forest, adventurers waited for the battle to begin.
Inside the orc-surrounded Bull Fortress, everything was eerily quiet.
Grigg said nothing, his blood-red eyes scrutinizing the fortress city before him.
Tall, sturdy, and perilous!
The relentless attacks from Bay Territory were unlike anything Grigg had ever encountered.
While he didn't regret agreeing to the deal,
he had to admit the difficulty of this "trade" was underestimated!
"As expected, those guys aren't trustworthy!"
Thinking back to the captured human craftsmen, Grigg raised his massive, murderous battle axe high and roared:
"Black Spine Orcs, attack!"
The thunderous roar carried an intimidating power.
The distant adventurers watching turned pale, their legs trembling in fear.
This was the stark disparity in power!
It was a genuine display of Grigg's overwhelming dominance!
As soon as the command was given, Grigg charged toward Bull Fortress, flanked by a horde of elite orcs.
His charge triggered a wild frenzy, as the orc horde roared and surged like a tide.
No tactics!
No formations!
"Man the crossbows, fire at targets outside the moat!"
The clear voice, accompanied by an Aura of Courage, echoed along the walls.
Crossbow strings tore through the air with a hum.
Bolts flew in all directions.
Wave after wave, like an unending storm.
Wielding his massive axe with one hand, Grigg spun it to slash and deflect incoming bolts.
With unmatched might, he leapt across the six-to-seven-meter-wide moat, landing alone on the other side.
His imposing frame and heavy steel armor did not diminish his explosive power, showcasing breathtaking strength.
Behind him, the orcs fell screaming under the unrelenting rain of bolts.
However, the Black Spine Orcs were better equipped than the Gurubashi trolls.
Leading the charge, the elite orcs donned heavy armor and carried massive steel shields, pushing forward under the crossbow fire until they reached the moat.
Waiting for them were the gaping maws of the swamp crocodiles.
Even the fearless elite orcs hesitated.
Unlike Grigg, they couldn't leap over the moat in heavy armor!
With the arrow storm unrelenting, they struggled to hold their ground.
Grigg, at the forefront, smashed into the city gate like a battering ram.
Crack!
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The heavy steel gate groaned under the strain, its cries of distress echoing as it was torn apart, leaving a three-to-four-meter gash.
Before Grigg could celebrate, a cascade of rubble poured through the gaping wound.
The gate's interior was completely blocked!
While Grigg's power was formidable, all he managed was to leave crisscrossing scars on the gate without breaking through.
After three to four minutes under constant crossbow fire, thousands of orc corpses piled up before the moat.
Finally, the elite orcs received the siege tools they had always scorned.
Soldiers defending the walls thought the orcs seemed brainless.
However, Beelzebub, leading the defense, wore a grave expression and gestured cautiously to Angela at the rear.
The prudent Angela decisively issued the next command:
"Target the moat! Catapults, fire!!"
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Twenty towering treants hurled stones with all their might, sending them hurtling toward the moat.
The spinning boulders, like cannonballs, streaked through the air.
Upon impact, even the strongest elite orc would be instantly pulverized.
The ladders bridging the moat became primary targets.
The fearless elite orcs pressed on, enduring the stone and bolt bombardment, following Grigg's lead to cross the moat.
They showed no fear of death!
Angela remained vigilant as the elite orcs drew closer:
"Prepare incendiary oil and alchemical fuel to stop them from advancing!"
Want to fight us? Try climbing the walls first!
