Chapter 552 - Chapter 552: Spells Study Group - The Shield Charm

No one spoke—not even the upper-year students.

The Weasley twins, known far and wide for their mischief and troublemaking, were notorious for loudly interrupting or heckling even during Dumbledore's speeches.

But when Wade looked their way now, the two simply smiled and gave him a thumbs-up.

Wade smiled softly in return and said, "Very good. I'm glad you all agree with my approach. That gives us a great foundation for what's to come."

"Today, the first spell we'll be learning is the Shield Charm—Protego."

Wade turned and gave his wand a wave. A piece of chalk in the box leapt into the air and quickly began writing on the blackboard: the incantation Protego, key learning points, and even a simple illustrative diagram.

A murmur of hushed amazement rippled through the room.

To casually wave a wand and have the chalk write of its own accord—it looked effortless. But there wasn't a second person in the room capable of doing it.

And to do it nonverbally—that was an advanced technique usually tackled in sixth or seventh year.

"Why start with the Shield Charm?"

Wade lowered his wand and looked at the group. "Because before you defeat your enemy, you must learn to protect yourself. In real combat, only those who survive have the right to talk about victory."

"The Shield Charm is a core spell for Aurors. It can block most jinxes and curses, including Stupefy, Expelliarmus, and many forms of dark magic. Of course, its actual strength depends greatly on the wizard casting it."

"On that note—most adult wizards today, even those working in the Ministry of Magic, can't cast a proper Shield Charm. That's one of the main reasons Jink-Off vests from the Aslan Magic Workshop sell so well."

Fred and George broke into bright grins when they heard that.

They had a stake in those vests—those two were likely the wealthiest members of the Weasley family by now.

Of course, no matter how many Galleons they had, it didn't stop them from scheming a few Sickles of pocket money out of their classmates whenever they could.

"So, if you master this spell, there's a good chance you'll already be surpassing your own parents in at least one area. Naturally, that also speaks to the difficulty of learning Protego."

Wade continued, "Now, I'll need a volunteer to cast a spell at me, so I can demonstrate how the Shield Charm works in practice."

Several hands shot up immediately. To Wade's surprise, no one rushed to the front—everyone waited patiently to be chosen.

"Angelina Johnson," Wade called.

A tall, dark-haired Gryffindor girl lit up with delight, then drew her wand and stepped up onto the platform.

"Any spell I want?" she asked, tilting her head.

"Of course," Wade said. Then, after a brief pause, he addressed the class again:

"Just to be clear—don't try to block the Killing Curse with Protego."

"Alright, that's a relief then," she grinned.

With a sudden swipe of her wand, Angelina shouted, "Stupefy!"

"Protego!"

Wade cast the spell almost simultaneously. A silver barrier unfolded instantly—the Stunning spell struck it and triggered rippling waves, then rebounded. Several students scrambled to dodge it, but a Gryffindor standing at the back, who hadn't seen it clearly, was hit squarely and collapsed unconscious on the spot.

"Thank you for your cooperation, Miss Johnson. You may return to your seat," Wade said.

The black-haired girl smiled, hopped off the platform, and rejoined her group of friends.

Wade turned to the others, cast a counter-spell to wake the younger student, and said, "That was the Shield Charm. Among all spells, it's one of the most life-saving."

He then used his wand like a pointer, gesturing to the content written on the blackboard, and explained in detail how to pronounce the incantation, how to move the wand, what to watch out for, and what to do if the spell's power was weak.

Wade had always felt that Hogwarts professors lacked formal teaching training. Even someone as skilled and experienced as Professor Flitwick would usually just demonstrate a spell once or twice, have the students repeat the incantation a few times, and then leave them to repetitive, mechanical practice.

Students would repeat the spell over and over, failing countless times, until they succeeded once by chance. From there, they'd try to capture that fleeting sensation and continue practicing until the spell became second nature.

But with the right approach—breaking down a difficult spell like a skilled butcher dissecting a cow, layer by layer, highlighting each learning point for students to understand and internalize before putting it all back together—the learning process could be far more efficient.

Of course, this method had its downsides too. It was like tearing open a finished bun and force-feeding it to students one bite at a time. Naturally, it wasn't as deep or satisfying an understanding as if they had made the bun themselves, from mixing the dough to steaming it.

Still, for many—Harry included—they didn't need to know how the bun was made. As long as they could eat it, digest it, and benefit from it, that was enough.

After explaining the key points of the spell, Wade had everyone pair up: one person attacking, the other defending, to practice the Shield Charm.

To avoid serious injuries, the attacking side was only allowed to use minor jinxes like the Dancing Feet Spell. Of course, if anyone had already mastered Expelliarmus, they were welcome to use it too.

Before long, the classroom was filled with laughter—some students were dancing wildly under the effects of the jinxes. Harry and a few others who had already learned the Shield Charm were tasked by Wade with casting counter-spells to help those who couldn't defend themselves yet.

Meanwhile, Wade walked among the students like a proper professor, offering tips and corrections to their casting or movements.

"Stop—what you're doing is slicing cake. What we need is a smooth hooking motion…"

"Relax your wrist. Let the magic flow naturally, like breathing… Don't know how to make it feel natural? Then start by shaking out your arms—get rid of that stiffness first."

"Put the stress on the second syllable. Pro-TE-go—say it like that."

"Your determination isn't strong enough. Hmm... What do you love most?... Cats? Alright, then imagine your cat is trembling in a corner, and a tiger is pouncing toward it—what would you do?"

"Uh..." Hufflepuff's Linnie replied in a trembling voice, "...run away?"

Wade: "…Shouldn't you protect it?"

"Actually..." Linnie blushed and shyly said, "It's more often the one protecting me..."

Wade: "..."

Linnie seemed to sense something was off. She nervously glanced up at Wade and softly added, "Sorry… I'm really dumb… and weak… the Shield Charm is just too hard for me..."

Wade patiently said, "Centuries ago, there was a violent nobleman who forced a Muggle boy to duel with him. Just as the boy was about to be killed, a witch named Hannah cast a Shield Charm between them."

"The baron was thrown back by the impact of the spell, suffered severe brain damage, and spent the rest of his life believing he was a donkey named Fluffy Cyril."

"We don't know exactly when the Shield Charm was invented, but it definitely originated from the will to protect someone—or something. Regardless of how strong your magic is, when your conviction is strong enough, you can cast spells beyond your usual ability."

Looking down at the fluffy head before him, Wade sighed and said, "Keep practicing. You've got the right focus—just practice more and you'll definitely get it."

Linnie didn't dare say more, just nodded.

As Wade turned to the next student, she suddenly raised her head and said, "Wa… Wade…"

"What is it?" Wade turned back. "Is there something you still don't understand?"

—or maybe she wants to quit?

That thought crossed Wade's mind.

He wasn't particularly bothered, but if someone backed out this early, it would feel kind of embarrassing…

"It's nothing," Linnie said softly. "I just wanted to say… thank you, really."

After a moment of hesitation, she raised her wand and added, "I'll work really hard at it!"
