Albert called all the maids with brown hair and grey eyes to gather after the morning meals were served. Vera heard the news and panicked, as did the other maids; they wondered whether someone among them was a spy, and the queen was trying to find that person.
No one thought positively about being summoned, and they went about their morning with a gloom hanging over them.
The morning meal passed quickly, and they all strolled toward the servants' quarters' living room. Other maids passed by, whispering curiously or eyeing them in suspicion.
"What do you think the butler wants with them?"
"They're dead. They must have angered the queen to be summoned by the butler."
"Are they spies from other kingdoms or the church?"
"Later, I'll sneak into the living room to find out what's going on."
The whispers made Vera's legs feel like lead, her heart pounding in her chest as her mind raced through possible reasons they might have been summoned.
