Between the two available missions, Chris decided to tackle the first one initially.
His destination was Dewford Town.
Lugia soared gracefully through the sky, carrying Chris toward the island destination.
Upon landing, Chris's first priority was visiting the local Pokemon Center for his team's treatment and recovery.
Afterward, he circled Dewford Island using Gyarados as his aquatic mount, methodically searching the surrounding waters.
The mission briefing had mentioned Team Rocket operatives appearing in the waters near Dewford Town, but no specific location had been confirmed. Chris would need to conduct his own investigation to locate them.
He began systematically patrolling around Dewford Island.
Unlike reality, where searching an entire island would be time-consuming and targets could easily remain hidden, the game world's version of Dewford Island was compact enough that Chris could survey the entire area within minutes.
Soon enough, he spotted a Team Rocket member wearing the organization's distinctive black uniform with a large red "R" emblazoned across the chest. The grunt was skulking near Dewford Island's shoreline, pressed against a wall as if contemplating some misdeed.
Chris approached and initiated conversation, immediately triggering a Pokemon battle.
However, this was merely a low-ranking Team Rocket grunt with relatively weak Pokemon. His level 30 Crobat and level 32 Tentacruel were easily defeated by Chris's team.
"Team Rocket member: Time to make my escape!" the defeated grunt declared.
The defeated Team Rocket member immediately fled, diving into the water directly in front of Chris.
Chris promptly used Dive to pursue him underwater, soon discovering a glowing passage entrance. As he approached, a system notification appeared before him.
[Enter special dungeon "Codename: Destruction"? (Warning: Dungeon disappears after completion)]
[Recommended Entry Level: 85]
"Another dungeon!" Chris raised his eyebrows with interest.
Could it be that all three of the Hoenn League's missions corresponded to special dungeons? Would they also correspond to three different Legendary Pokemon encounters?
The possibility seemed quite likely!
Dark Sea Mauville had rewarded him with a Lugia, so what kind of Legendary Pokemon would this dungeon provide?
However, this dungeon called "Codename: Destruction" only had a recommended level of 85, which was five levels lower than Dark Sea Mauville's recommendation. If it did contain a Legendary Pokemon, it might be slightly less formidable.
With growing anticipation, Chris entered the dungeon.
Light and shadow flashed before his eyes.
Chris materialized inside the dungeon, finding himself standing in a brightly illuminated hall. Behind him lay a deep underwater pool with a submarine vessel docked nearby.
He had just emerged from that very location.
"This looks quite similar to Team Aqua's base," Chris observed, "except for that massive red 'R' symbol mounted prominently in the center."
It was definitely Team Rocket! The wealthy criminal organization certainly spared no expense on their facilities.
"WOOOO WOOOO WOOOO!"
Chris's arrival immediately triggered a rapid, piercing alarm system. Red warning lights flashed throughout the facility, indicating an intruder alert and imminent danger.
Standing in the main hall, Chris could already hear hurried footsteps approaching from multiple directions.
Presumably, a large group of Team Rocket operatives had begun converging on his location upon hearing the alarm sirens.
"Gardevoir, scan this entire base," Chris commanded, releasing a Poke Ball.
Gardevoir emerged with its elegant dress-like lower body floating gracefully above the ground, simultaneously undergoing Mega Evolution.
Ever since Chris had acquired the three mysterious orbs, he possessed abundant energy reserves. Unlike most trainers who conserved their strength and only used Mega Evolution when absolutely necessary, Chris was confident enough to challenge even Legendary Pokemon in one-on-one combat.
Chris felt completely comfortable having his Pokemon undergo Mega Evolution at will.
The physical energy required to maintain a Pokemon's Mega Evolution was practically negligible to him now.
"Garde~" Mega Gardevoir pressed its hands together, extending its psychic power like an invisible blanket throughout the facility. While surveying the surrounding terrain and layout, it simultaneously hypnotized all approaching Team Rocket members who were heading toward the main hall.
Suddenly, the Team Rocket operatives who had been rushing toward the lobby found themselves confused and disoriented, wandering aimlessly instead.
One minute later, Mega Gardevoir projected a detailed three-dimensional holographic model before Chris.
Team Rocket's base was extraordinarily large—even more expansive than both the Team Aqua and Team Magma bases he had encountered previously.
"This must be Team Rocket's regional headquarters for the Hoenn Region," Chris concluded after careful consideration.
Dewford Town was indeed an isolated location, positioned in the southwestern extremity of the Hoenn Region and surrounded by ocean. It represented the perfect territory for a foreign criminal organization to establish their operational base.
"Garde! (Target acquired)" Mega Gardevoir extended its arm, pointing toward a room deep within the laboratory complex where two figures were positioned.
"Teleport us there," Chris decided to confront the leadership directly without hesitation.
When his vision cleared from blurry to sharp focus, Chris had traveled hundreds of meters instantaneously to the room Mega Gardevoir had indicated.
"A Hoenn Region Champion?!"
The moment Chris materialized, the occupants of the room immediately expressed their shock and surprise.
Chris looked up at the two individuals before him. One was a blue-haired young man dressed in a customized Team Rocket Executive uniform, while the other was a middle-aged man with distinctive purple hair, a pointed goatee, and a slightly hunched posture.
"If I'm not mistaken, you two must be Team Rocket's Four Generals—Archer and Proton!" Chris addressed them with a confident smile, never expecting to encounter such significant targets in a Hoenn Region dungeon.
The younger man was clearly Archer, while the middle-aged individual was Proton.
Team Rocket didn't have many famous executives in their ranks. Chris had read the Pokemon Adventures manga series extensively and was well-versed in their identities and capabilities.
Neither Archer nor Proton responded to his identification. Instead, their faces showed high alert, and they had already released their Pokemon in preparation for battle.
A menacing Houndoom stood beside Archer, glaring at Chris with obvious hostility and ready to attack at any moment. Above Archer's head, a Crobat circled ominously through the air.
Proton was surrounded by two Weezing, maintaining an extremely defensive posture.
However, Chris paid little attention to these four Pokemon, all hovering around level 85.
"What brings you two to our Hoenn Region?" Chris inquired casually.
Archer and Proton remained silent, refusing to answer his question. They exchanged a meaningful glance and immediately launched their coordinated assault on Chris.
"Weezing, use Smokescreen!" Proton commanded sharply.
Archer joined the attack. "Crobat, use Air Cutter!"
"Houndoom, Flare Blitz!"
The two Weezing immediately expelled thick, choking smoke that billowed to the ground before spreading outward like dense fog.
Their strategy was to obscure Chris's vision while using the darkness to protect both Proton and Archer from counterattacks.
Crobat attacked from within the concealing smoke. Its invisible Air Cutter created ripples through the haze as it moved, making the already undetectable attack even more stealthy and dangerous.
"Arooooo!" Houndoom howled fiercely, charging out of the smokescreen with incredible speed. Rainbow-colored light collapsed around its form as it broke free from the haze—it had evolved into Mega Houndoom. In the next instant, blazing flames erupted around its body.
Racing forward like a speeding black chariot wreathed in fire, it aimed to ram directly into both Chris and Mega Gardevoir with devastating force.
Faced with this coordinated assault, Chris simply smiled calmly and threw a single Poke Ball.
"Blaziken, use Flying Press!"
