The sound of air being pierced rang out with a sharp crack, followed immediately by a deep, thunderous roar.
Mega Houndoom's body had been rushing forward at incredible speed with Flare Blitz, but now it was flying backward even faster than it had approached.
Chris already knew the answer to Blaziken's kicking power when he saw where Mega Houndoom landed.
[Defeat Houndoom LV85, Blaziken gains 18,220 experience points]
A one-hit knockout!
When the level difference isn't too great and a super-effective move connects, an instant defeat becomes possible. This represented the minimum combat capability of Chris's Pokemon team!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Chris and Blaziken remained motionless without launching another attack, yet the sounds of collisions and explosions continued echoing through the thick haze that surrounded them.
[Defeat Crobat LV85 | Gardevoir gains 13,360 experience points]
[Defeat Weezing LV85, Gardevoir gains 13,220 experience points]
[Defeat Weezing LV85, Gengar gains 12,557 experience points]
In less than a minute, a sudden Fairy Wind swept through the area, clearing away the dense black smoke completely.
Archer and Proton stood with blank expressions and glazed eyes, while their Pokemon lay scattered around the battlefield, completely unable to continue fighting.
When Archer and Proton had launched their initial attack, their goal hadn't been to defeat Chris, but rather to create an opportunity for retreat.
The appearance of Chris, the Champion of the Hoenn Region, meant this base had been discovered by the Hoenn Alliance. Even if they managed to defeat Chris somehow, the Hoenn Alliance would continue their assault on the facility.
There was no longer any reason for this base to remain operational.
Furthermore, was a Regional Champion really someone they could deal with so easily?
Archer and Proton had no desire to fight Chris to the death.
Retreat had been their best option from the start.
Weezing's Haze technique had served as the perfect smokescreen for their escape attempt.
However, their movements had been completely within Chris's field of vision the entire time.
Did they want to run away?
What a joke. If they escaped, then his journey here would have been completely pointless.
Mega Gardevoir and Gengar had worked together to bring down each opponent's Pokemon one by one.
Under such overwhelming power, both high-ranking Team Rocket executives were unable to resist and fell under hypnosis.
"So... is anyone else hiding in the shadows?" Chris asked, scanning the surrounding area carefully.
"No," the hypnotized Archer replied unconsciously.
"No one else? Really?" Chris seemed surprised. "Doesn't Team Rocket have any legendary Pokemon here? The Dark Sea facility in Mauville had them, don't you?"
This dungeon's difficulty level was only five levels lower than that one.
"What about legendary Pokemon?"
"None."
Chris expressed his disappointment clearly. "Then what exactly is this base for?"
"This base serves as Team Rocket's forward outpost for conquering the Hoenn Region, and it also functions as Team Rocket's regional headquarters for non-border operations," Archer answered with complete honesty.
Was Chris mistaken? No legendary Pokemon stationed here? Just an ordinary Team Rocket hideout?
Chris rubbed his chin thoughtfully, but if he captured Archer and Proton, he could potentially eliminate all Team Rocket hideouts throughout the Hoenn Region.
"Nai~ (Master, look at this)" Mega Gardevoir suddenly called his attention.
Chris looked toward the location Mega Gardevoir indicated. In the center of the room stood a device resembling a large thermos, containing a red solution.
"What is that?"
"A Berserk Gene," Proton answered this time.
"Berserk Gene?" Chris remembered this as a Pokemon consumable item. Its effect seemed to greatly increase attack power, but it caused an extremely long period of confusion status in return.
"These are genes we extracted from Mewtwo's body," Proton explained further.
"Genes from Mewtwo's body!" Chris raised his eyebrows slightly, remembering that in the games, the only way to obtain a Berserk Gene was through Mewtwo.
"So you have Mewtwo?"
"Never."
"Then how do you have a Berserk Gene?"
"We kept samples from when Mewtwo was originally created."
Chris nodded slightly. Mewtwo was a Pokemon artificially created by Team Rocket using Mew's genetic material, so it wasn't surprising that they retained some of Mewtwo's genetic samples.
He reached out and retrieved the container holding the Berserk Gene.
This item was definitely getting confiscated by him!
However, to Chris's surprise, the Berserk Gene didn't appear in his consumable items inventory, but instead showed up in his valuable items collection.
Berserk Gene:
When held: Physical Attack and Special Attack are increased by 50%, Psychic-type power increased by 50%, and all moves gain "Piercing" effect... (Piercing: Ignores 20% of target's Defense and Special Defense)
Pokemon below level 70 have a 50% chance of becoming confused after using any move.
When used: Physical Attack and Special Attack are increased by 100%, Psychic-type power increased by 100%, and all moves gain "Destruction" effect. (Destruction: Ignores 50% of target's Defense and Special Defense, and inflicts injuries that cannot be recovered quickly)
Pokemon below level 100 have a 100% chance of falling into a Confusion status lasting 256 days after using any move.
This was the first time Chris had encountered a Pokemon item that functioned as both a consumable and a held item simultaneously.
It was clearly a legendary-tier item.
It was ten thousand times more powerful than the Berserk Gene he had seen in the games!
A 50% boost when held, with double effectiveness when consumed!
Looking at the item's description, Chris couldn't help but swallow nervously.
The optimal way to use this Berserk Gene would be as a consumable. For Gardevoir, the 100% Special Attack boost combined with doubled Psychic-type power would be equivalent to quadrupling its offensive capability!
However, the negative effects of using it made Chris temporarily abandon the idea of having Gardevoir use it directly.
Using a move with 100% chance of confusion lasting 256 days was absolutely not worth the risk.
He should honestly raise Gardevoir's level to 100 before considering using it.
Regarding the note that the Berserk Gene might attract the attention of a certain Pokemon, Chris could guess with complete certainty that it referred to Mewtwo. But... it didn't matter. There was no Mewtwo in this real world, and even if there was one in the game world, he couldn't encounter it for the time being.
So, for now, the Berserk Gene would be given to Gardevoir as a held item.
Gengar and Blaziken nearby looked quite envious.
There was no helping it - this would be Gardevoir's second legendary-level Pokemon item.
The first had been the Lustrous Orb.
There should have been three items total. The third was a legendary-level Pokemon item called "Gracidea," which Chris had given to Totem Venusaur after Gardevoir didn't use it much.
