Chapter 317 - Chapter 316: Hunter J

Hunter J, or as she was once called, Jade Valken — The Woman Who Became Hunter J.

Jade Valken was born in a remote frontier settlement near the edge of civilization. In that harsh place, people and Pokemon lived difficult lives far away from the protection of the major regions.

Resources were scarce, and danger was always close. Her parents were Pokemon Rangers tasked with protecting trade routes from poachers, smugglers, and wild Pokemon disasters. They worked hard every day to keep travelers safe and maintain order in a lawless area.

As a child, Jade learned an ugly lesson early in life: good people did not always win. When she was eight years old, a powerful criminal syndicate attacked a convoy that her parents were escorting.

The Rangers sent distress calls and followed every regulation, waiting patiently for reinforcements. But help never arrived in time. By the time backup finally came, dozens of people were dead, including Jade's parents.

The criminals escaped with many stolen Pokemon and rare artifacts. The official investigations were held afterward. High-ranking officials offered their condolences and promised changes. In the end, nothing changed. The system had failed her family completely.

This event shaped Jade forever. She grew up hating one thing more than anything: weakness. To her, her parents had died because they believed too strongly in laws, mercy, and institutions that could not protect them when it mattered most.

She came to believe that the world was ruled by power alone. The strong took what they wanted, and the weak convinced themselves that justice existed to feel better. This belief became the foundation of her entire life.

As a teenager, Jade became a mercenary. She hunted dangerous Pokemon for money and completed difficult jobs that others avoided. She was exceptionally talented and efficient. Unlike Rangers, she never cared about ideals or saving everyone. Unlike common criminals, she always fulfilled her contracts no matter how hard they were. Her reputation spread quickly through the underworld. People began to respect and fear her cold determination.

Then came the job that changed everything. A wealthy collector hired her to capture a rare Pokemon. Jade expected another routine mission with good payment.

Instead, she discovered that the collector was the very man responsible for financing the syndicate that had killed her parents years ago. When she finally found him, he was untouchable. He was protected by money, lawyers, and strong political connections.

For the first time, Jade abandoned the law completely. She delivered the Pokemon as promised, accepted her payment, and then ensured the collector disappeared from public life forever. Nobody could prove her involvement. Nobody dared to investigate too closely.

The experience shattered whatever faith she had left in morality. If power could erase crimes so easily, then power was the only thing worth pursuing.

Jade Valken was fourteen when she first encountered the Bagon that would become her partner. The young dragon was infamous in the mountains surrounding her settlement.

It was larger than other Bagon and unusually aggressive. It attacked anyone who ventured near its territory. Rangers had tried to capture it. Trainers had tried to battle it. Everyone had failed. But the Bagon chose her because he took despised weakness.

With an Alpha pseudo legendary as her ace, Jade began building her own organization. She abandoned her family name and rarely used "Valken" outside of forged documents.

Clients knew her only by a single letter: J. The name became a symbol in the underworld. If Hunter J accepted a contract, the target would be found.

It did not matter whether it was rare Pokemon, ancient relics, or individuals who needed to be eliminated. She succeeded where others failed because she viewed everything as an asset. Pokemon were assets. Money was an asset. People were assets. Even loyalty was merely an asset to be bought and sold.

Yet beneath her cold exterior remained the frightened little girl who had watched the world fail her family. Hunter J never sought wealth for luxury or power for glory. She sought control. If she controlled everything around her, then nobody could ever leave her helpless again. By the time the world knew her as Hunter J, Jade Valken was already gone. Or so she told herself.

---

Back to the present.

Jade brushed the sweat from the back of her neck that had formed after her close encounter with Latios and Gladion. Her heart was still beating faster than normal.

She could still feel the powerful aura of the legendary Pokemon and even the strong aura surrounding Gladion himself. There was no doubt in her mind that he was the strongest individual she had ever seen.

She had lived because of his mercy. For the first time in many years, she had been truly terrified. The feeling was strange and uncomfortable. She had faced death many times before, but this was different. Gladion and his legendaries could have ended her without much effort.

The fact that he chose to let her go, made her question her own strength and control in a way she had not done since she was a child.

She then smiled slowly to herself. "He had made me sweat. Me of all people. He would make a perfect partner for our ventures. Ah, now I know why that Sabrina confessed to this man. The man is worthy of affection. He is power personified..."

Gladion had shown her something rare — true overwhelming strength combined with control. She respected that more than anything else.

One of her henchmen approached carefully and asked, "But what about our clients ma'am?"

Jade looked at him with cold eyes and replied without hesitation, "Tell them to fuck off."
