Danilo stepped out of the room to give me a chance to dress.
The door clicked shut behind him and I let out a breath I had not realized I was holding. My hands were trembling. I pressed them to my sides and tried to make them stop.
Why was Danilo here?
Yes, of course I knew he would want to be involved in the child's life. He was the father. It was his baby too. But it was still strange. To see him walk in wearing that coat and those boots like nothing had happened. Like we were not two people who signed papers and walked away from each other.
I let out a sigh and pulled the hospital gown off. My clothes felt normal again. Jeans and a soft sweater. I ran a hand over my stomach before I covered it. The bump was still small. Still mine.
I took one more second in the little room. The gel was still cold on my skin. The ultrasound strip was still on the counter where Dr Otto left it. I folded it and put it in my bag.
