Chapter 10 - Wave after wave

While Valerius was doing his best to counter the creature wave as quickly as possible, other waves hit the west and north gate of the town simultaneously.

Since the east gate faced the forest directly two mages were responsible for guarding that entrance.

Simultaneously another two mages stood guard on the north gate too.

These four mages were strong enough to act as the shield of the town. They might be somewhat weak in the offence but defence was something they did very well.

Then again, they never had to fear a sudden wave of creatures because of their lord. Valerius was very vigilant when it came to protecting the town.

That was why this time, the mages were feeling a little troubled. The attack of creatures came at a peculiar time and occasion.

Not only that, these creatures fought like an organized army which was a rare sight to be seen in this wild embracing forest.

The reason was clear though, it was the new rising tyrant behind this attack. He was also the reason why their night patrols had become more frequent, not sparing them a moment of rest.

The night fell, waves clashed against the barrier. Loud screeches of creatures covered the whole sky as they fell into the traps that were laid in advance.

Some were devoured whole by land below, some fell into excruciating pain. Spikes of energy pierced the bodies of many and purple blood seeped out of the corpses.

Two middle aged mages, Bren and Hesk were in charge of the eastern gate as they moved forward casting spells to trigger traps left and right.

Thick chains of ethereal light formed, pinning the creatures to the ground.

Then Hesk casted a guillotine blade and let it down on the chain bound creature. Taking the life out of it just like that.

Then another pair of creatures charged forward aiming to break their defences but soon after were caught in one of the traps and fell into the depths of land below.

Bren crafted heavy chains of ethereal energy holding a number of soldiers back, at the same time Hesk conjured blades of different types and made the creatures bleed again —piercing their thick chitinous shells.

While the spell these two were performing looked grand and pleasing to the eyes, in reality—a spell of this level cost a lot of mental energy.

Spellcraft was possible by natural conscious essence present in the surroundings but every mage was limited by their mental capacity to be able to turn his imagination into reality.

Needless to say, the idea has to be in alignment with the workings of their core element. Otherwise the spell could prove very difficult to cast.

Bren and Hesk wanted nothing more than to see their responsibility fulfilled. Hence they cast spell after spell. Hordes of creatures charged forward, attempting to overwhelm these two human mages

with sheer numbers.

However, they weren't novices either and stood their ground firmly.

Circumstances were rather similar at the north gate too. Since two experienced mages, one male Arden and the female mage Vala countered the incoming enemy tide with the best of their abilities.

Lights flashed, weapons took shape in the darkness of night and chaos surrounded three gates of the town like no one had seen before.

Only one entrance remained out of their sight it seems.

Then again it wasn't an easy target to strike on.

The west gate had only one mage to protect it, because this was like a backdoor to the town. It faced tall hills of a rocky mountain. Since there weren't many dangerous creatures ready to brave the difficult terrain of rocks— it usually remained free from visitors.

Well, the situation today was rather unusual.

One female mage Elra, wearing a battlerobe stood guard on the west entrance to the town.

Elra, it seems, was doing fine, since there wasn't much news regarding creatures showing up at the west gate —which was expected considering it wasn't a region easy to attack.

She stood strong in the face of the enemy, although they were few in numbers as compared to the other gates.

Elra was a mostly defence type mage, her ability to conjure shields of energy and reinforce with layers made it easy for her to place a barrier on the small portion of west gate that also upon the already existing dome shaped barrier that covered the whole town.

She wasn't able to create a magnificence like this right now but Elra was ambitious and used to look up to the individual who had placed this ultimate safe guard here.

It was none other than Aurelion. Elra had learnt many things from him and used to be his student in spell craft. She too wanted to achieve great feats like Aurelion someday.

Needless to say, her ambition reflected on her shields and barriers quite often as she always tried to do something new with her imagination.

Like right now when she stood inside of the golden interference and watched the enemy soldiers electrocuted to death as soon as they touched her specially reinforced shield placed on the west gate.

It did take a lot of her mental energy to maintain the shield but to her it was all worth it.

At the north gate, the army of the creatures was immense.

As soon as Valerius was done with the problem at the south gate he hurriedly approached the north gate. Since it was the region where most people resided.

That's why the safety of this region should be prioritised.

Victor naturally followed Valerius here so that they together could quickly deal with the danger.

Not to mention Bren and Hesk were countering the danger on the eastern gate very well. Until they exhaust all of their mental energy or the will to cast any spell —Valerius had to reach there before it happens.

Enemy forces were only getting bigger in numbers. No matter how much fire and flames Valerius rained on them.

The number was big but not invincible. It was a simple matter of time.

Victor wasn't far behind, even though at his limits, he took control of the minds of enemy soldiers making it seem like so effortless.

Arden controlled pieces of the rocks and smashed the enemy forces between them. Simultaneously, Vala conjured crescents of wind blades to cleave the enemy soldiers in half.

Although, it took some time —Valerius and the rest managed to neutralize the danger from the North gate.

He let out a sigh of relief and turned to one of the guards,

"Any reports from other sites?"

"Not many sightings of enemy forces at the west gate Mage Elra had everything in control and …we are still waiting for the east gate report sir," the guard replied.

Just then, a messenger came running to him. At the sight of him Valerius grew a bit tense.

Panting heavily he turned to Valerius without even catching a breath,

"My …Lord the …east gate defences are collapsing... .had requested …requested for reinforcements."
