Chapter 7 - [ CHAPTER VI (6) ]

[ CHAPTER VI (6): "WARM WELCOME FROM THE HOUSE OF SERPENTS" ]

[ "No!" ] Torrin pleaded for the nth time, and for the nth time it fell on deaf ears as Prefect Parkinson with her head raised high, continued walking the corridors, headed to the Potions Classroom— to their Head of House. And on her face plastered a shit-eating grin, as she continues to ignore him.

[ "I can't hear you loud enough, Thorpe." ]

[ "You can't do this, come on do me a solid or something, will you?" ] He blocked her, stopping her from continuing her walk. She shifted to the right, Torrin did the same; she shifted to the left, Torrin did the same, wanting for her to really not go.

[ "Heh, how about no." ] Melinda merely smirked at his attempt, before then brute forcing her way past Torrin; with no meat on his bones, the endeavor was easily done. [ "Besides, why do you not want the Professor to know about your condition?" ]

[ "Because of...." ]

[ "Because of...?" ]

And in response to that, Torrin could only shrug his shoulders as he then gives a bullshit reason. [ "Just because." ] Not really wanting to delve deeper and tell her the real reason, which is incoherent and incomprehensible to her who doesn't know even a fraction of what Torrin does.

In truth, Torrin who doesn't belong to this world, or universe— practically an alien. He doesn't want Professor Snape, the skilled mind-reader (Legilimence) to read his mind either subconsciously or intently. If so, then he'll know everything.

He'll know that he'll die in the future. He'll know that Torrin knows that he's a double spy. He'll know that Torrin knows his rivalry with James Potter, and his unrequited love to Lily Potter neé Evans. He'll know the future, which might or might prevent it from happening exactly one-to-one. In short, a variable that Torrin doesn't want to happen.

[ "Hah, funny reason Thorpe. Now, move out the way; Prefects have duties, you know— or wouldn't you, you aren't one after all." ]

With a certain sassiness only known to her, Ms. Melinda Parkinson then continued her stride, on her way to the Potions Classroom which is near. How could Torrin know? That is because there's a giant floating, [ POTIONS CLASSROOM ] text hovering in front of one door, the one where she's going.

[ "Oh dear..." ] He doesn't know what to do anymore; he did everything he could. He tried pleading, but it didn't work. He tried bargaining, didn't work either. He tried threatening, didn't work, he had nothing. He tried it all, and now he might be doomed.

He blames himself really, Torrin does, if only he kept shut earlier about him not remembering anything— then perhaps she wouldn't have gained leverage on him, and that he wouldn't have to worry about being exposed as an alien, or something like that.

[ "Wait...!" ]

[ "I can't hear you~" ]

[ "I-I..." ] Fuck! He did try everything earlier, except that of bargaining. He didn't try it because he doesn't have anything to trade of equal value; physical, spiritual, or monetary wise. But now in thinking about it clearly, perhaps he does have one, something which he prays would work.

[ "I'll do all your uhh- essay assignments for the remaining school year." ] He screamed loud enough for her to hear, and for her to stop mid-stride. Seeing her hesitation, he then continued. [ "That is if you don't tell anyone about my secret— about my condition, about this bloody amnesia." ]

For a second she thought about it clearly, the words of Torrin Thorpe, the "mudblood". And for a second, she played along, testing the waters as she then turned and spoke. [ "Are you sure?" ]

[ "Ehm, yeah." ] He doesn't have a choice at the moment, and besides, as someone who studies day in and night out like a pig; a simple 2-3ft tall essay about beliefs and knowledge about a certain subject is easy for Torrin. Which led him to propose the deal in the first place. [ "I'm definitely sure." ]

[ "Magical Theory, Muggle Studies, Care of Magical Creatures, and Divination." ] She spoke abruptly, then continuing. [ "Those are my electives, are you sure you yourself can handle them alongside your already poor grades?" ]

This guy's an idiot? Fuck, my hard-earned reputation is ruined— my bloody study boy, scholar, top student, poster boy reputation...!

[ "Yeah." ] Torrin nodded, showing a toothy smile, eyes twitching slightly as he accepts the situation he founds himself in. [ "I-I think I'll manage." ]

[ "Hmm." ] For a second she put a hand on her chin, as if contemplating something. Then after some time, she opened her mouth to tell the concern, [ "Yeah, no. I think I'll much prefer telling our Head of the House about your misfortune." ]

[ "Come on!" ]

[ "Do you really think I'll accept that offer? From a mudblood? From someone who doesn't even remember anything? From someone who doesn't even know the difference between a fluxweed and a ditanny. You are an idiot, basically." ]

Her smirk was annoying to Torrin, especially the fact that she kept inching closer which made him back away whenever she did. And she was right, he doesn't know what the hell a fluxweed is, or what the hell a ditanny is.

Truthfully told, his knowledge about the Wizarding World doesn't go that far, he only knows about key events shown in the story either by the movies or by the books, not the extracurricular things taught in whatever the hell supplementary. Which includes things like a fluxweed or ditanny.

[ "Judging from your look, you don't know. Is this amnesia at work, or just plain stupidity?" ] She snickered, before then continuing as if lecturing a child. [ "Fluxweed is a key ingredient in a Polyjuice Potion— do you want me to tell what a Polyjuice is, or do you remember that?" ]

[ "I'm not that dense." ] Harry, Ron, and Hermione once brewed one in an abandoned lavatory— mostly Hermione, in the first movie. So he knows the effect of it. And oh, Barty Crouch Jr. used it to disguise himself as Alastor Moody for a prolonged period of time in the fourth movie. Great impression.

[ "Very good, plus 5 points to Slytherin, something you'll never hear inside a classroom." ] She mocked, arms folded while smiling, perhaps loving the fact that she has more power on someone rather than the other way around.

[ "Ditanny on the other hand is a very powerful herb used in healing, eat it, wounds close. Madam Pomfrey use it all the time. Perhaps she might have had even wasted one or a couple dozen on you when you were bedridden." ]

[ "Whoah." ] No 15-year-old speaks like that back in his original world, he should know, he is one. Usually people that talk like that are people who are really stoked about a certain topic or subject, or is someone who is forced to recite due to them pursuing higher education. Older people, yes, but not 15 year olds. This is a first for him.

[ "Yeah, whoah." ] She mocked Torrin by appearing shock and doing the hand gestures which he does, something-something that Torrin does unconsciously whenever he gets surprised. Before then turning her heel as she walks to the direction of the Potions Classroom.

[ "How about a bet, then?" ] From what he inferred, she either knows a lot about potion materials or she is genuinely knowledgeable about potions— and guessing the reason why she's both a Slytherin and chosen as a Prefect, there must be a reason.

And that reason most likely is that, she's an academic achiever; so a bet testing her knowledge is best. Probably. He doesn't know, he hadn't done challenging someone before like this; especially with him being on the underdog side, being a foreigner in this magical world and all.

[ "Go on." ]

[ "For the next week..." ] Oh shit, she actually bit into it. Torrin didn't know he'd get this far, so he instead thought of something as quickly as he could— then remembering about the House Points System which students seem to value. That's it!

[ "Whoever gets more points than the other will win, and would do the winner a favor. Whatever it may be." ] Like let's say, shutting the fuck up about me not remembering anything. How'd you say?

[ "That doesn't seem fair. For me that is." ] She then added with her head raised high, [ "How about, if I win; then you'll do my assignments for the rest of the school year, that, plus the favor." ]

Torrin Thorpe had never really known violence as the answer, which is why he always avoids it even in the orphanage or school. But he genuinely wanted that to be the answer at the moment, so that he could maybe punch her smug face; but no, sadly, that was not the answer. [ "Fine." ]

[ MISSION UNLOCKED: THE BET! ]

[ DESCRIPTION: YOU HAD MADE A BET WITH PREFECT PARKINSON ON YOUR OWN ACCORD, ACCUMULATE MORE HOUSE POINTS THAN HER FOR THE THE NEXT 168 HOURS. ]

[ FUN FACT: Pansy Parkinson, the most prominent member of the Parkinson Family thus far in the H.P Universe, is actually actively disliked by J.K. Rowling. Rowling has state that Pansy was based on girls who teased her in school, and she deliberately wrote it so that she would not end up with the golden boy— Draco Malfoy. She's the anti-Hermione of the story; and contrary to everything she does, she actually loves Unicorns. ]
