Samantha was barely able to say anything and just told him she needed his help and she was at her aunt's. Her voice was shaky, weak, and uneven, but Darian still understood her. Before she could say more, Samantha's fingers slipped from her phone, and it fell into the grass beside her. Her head was spinning, her ankle throbbed like it was on fire, and every breath felt heavier than the last.
She knew she shouldn't have been stubborn and just waited back. Kaia would lecture her head off but it was worth it, was what she kept telling herself. She would be worried about leaving her aunt for supplies unplanned.
She tried holding onto the old wooden fence to steady herself, but the world around her blurred at the edges. Her breathing came out shallow and panicked. She blinked twice, trying to force her vision to clear. Then the pain in her ankle shot up all the way to her head. Samantha gasped softly, her body giving up.
She slumped fully against the fence and blacked out.
