Chapter 21 - The last person she wanted to call

Morning sunlight streamed in through the thin curtains of Kaia's apartment living room and warmed Samabatha's face. Her head felt heavy and for a moment, she didn't know where she was. The pain in her ankle seemed to jolt back her memory as she let out a soft groan.

She blinked slowly. The blanket Kaia threw over her last night was tangled around her waist. She was still in her dress from the ball. Her hair was messy, make up faded, and her ankle throbbed like someone was hammering inside it. "Fuck it hurts." she mumbled, trying to move the leg.

Kaia's typing echoed from her small desk near the kitchen. Her laptop was open, a headset on her ears as she worked on one of her freelance online jobs. She hadn't noticed Samantha waking up.
