Chapter 8 - The Silent War

"A wound heals. A scar remains. A betrayal? That becomes a lesson."

The Academy had always been a battlefield—of knowledge, of ambition, of power. But now, for Aedric, it was something far more dangerous.

A hunt.

His betrayal had not gone unnoticed. The whispers that followed him had changed, thick with intrigue and caution. Eyes lingered on him longer. Footsteps trailed his own when they thought he wouldn't notice.

The Academy did not tolerate weakness. And to be betrayed was to be seen as weak.

Aedric would prove otherwise.

A Duel of Shadows – The First Lesson

Night had fallen over the Academy, but in the hidden courtyard where whispers were louder than words, Aedric stood across from Darius Vaelor.

"Rumors say you've lost your edge," Darius mused, his golden hair catching the moonlight. His sword gleamed as he unsheathed it. "That your betrayal has softened you."

Aedric met his gaze, unblinking. "Then let's correct those rumors."

Steel sang as Darius lunged. Aedric did not move—not at first. He let the blade come close, close enough that he could see his own reflection in its polished surface.

Then he stepped to the side, letting the strike pass inches from his throat.

Darius faltered, but only for a breath. He adjusted, his next strike a blur of practiced precision. Aedric did not dodge this time. He met it—barehanded.

A twist of the wrist, a shift of weight, and suddenly Darius' sword was no longer in his hand.

It was in Aedric's.

Darius staggered back, eyes wide. He had never been disarmed before.

Aedric let the stolen blade rest against Darius' throat. "Still think I've lost my edge?"

Darius did not answer.

Because in that moment, he realized—Aedric was no longer a student playing at power.

He was something else entirely.

The Black Veil Moves – An Invitation in Blood

Aedric returned to his chamber that night to find another letter waiting. Black wax. No name.

"You have been tested. You have been seen. The Veil watches."

This time, he did not burn it.

This time, he opened it.

Because if the Academy wanted to play games in the dark…

Then he would show them what true darkness was.

The Beginning of the End

The Academy had taught him to sharpen his mind.

The betrayal had taught him to harden his heart.

And now? Now it was time to teach the Academy something in return.

That even among the powerful, there were those who should never be crossed.

And Aedric was one of them.
