Kaiden crossed the gravel to where the disaster on four legs held his post, and not one of the six amber eyes came off the fence line for a single step of his approach.
He stopped beside the nearest foreleg, which put his shoulder somewhere around the height of Pebble's dewclaw, and followed the stare out to the same forty meters of dark he had already given up on from the tent door.
Nothing moved out there. He gave it a full minute of honest attention, and the night gave him back nothing at all.
"What do you see?"
One ear rotated toward him, acknowledging the question without spending a single eye on it. The staggered crown stayed exactly where it was, all six points of banked amber fixed on one patch of darkness that looked like every other patch of darkness, and the huge body under the stone plates did not so much as breathe wrong.
