Chapter 532: Lake Acuity
~Platinum B. POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Later, Lake Acuityfront – Lake Acuity]
The biting wind was a familiar companion, a constant reminder of Sinnoh's unforgiving winters. It whipped at my thin coat, a garment chosen for style over practicality, a mistake I was keenly feeling now.
My Pokémon, usually so vibrant and energetic, seemed to huddle closer in their Poké Balls, sensing the urgency of our mission. Leaving Snowpoint City had been a blur of determined faces and hushed strategies.
Candice declared, her voice a cheerful contrast to the grim situation, "Brrr! Even I'm getting a bit chilly, and I'm used to the cold!"
She jogged a little ahead, her breath pluming like a small cloud of smoke. Maylene, ever the stoic fighter, simply adjusted the scarf around her Riolu's neck, the Fighting-type Pokémon trotting valiantly beside her.
*Crunch—Crunch*
Snow crunched under our boots with every step – crunch, crunch, crunch – a rhythmic backdrop to the rapid beating of my heart.
The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and ice, and the world was a canvas of brilliant white, occasionally broken by the dark silhouettes of fir trees.
Maylene said optimistically, her eyes scanning the icy horizon, though she seemed to be perpetually looking inward, assessing the strength of an unseen opponent, "We need to make good time."
Candice announced, a mischievous glint in her eye, "Hmm, I know a shortcut."
She stopped abruptly, pulling a Poké Ball from her belt. Hurling out, she declared, "Come on out, Abomasnow!"
*Thwoomph*
A massive, ice-covered Pokémon materialized before us, its shaggy white fur dusted with fresh snow. Abomasnow let out a low growl, shaking its head, sending a flurry of snowflakes dancing around us.
Candice commanded, "Abomasnow, Rock Climb, if you please!"
The enormous Pokémon rumbled its consent.
With astonishing agility for its size, it began to scale the sheer rock face of a cliff that had seemed utterly impassable moments before. Its claws dug into the icy rock with powerful scrapes, carving out handholds and footholds as it ascended!
Candice gestured, "Alright, girls, hop on!"
Maylene and I exchanged a look. This was… unexpected. But with Team Galactic's bomb ticking, we couldn't afford hesitation.
I clambered onto Abomasnow's broad back, the cold fur surprisingly warm against my hands. Maylene followed, Riolu hopping up beside her. The ascent was exhilarating. Below us, the world shrank, the snowy trees becoming miniature models…
*WOOOSH*
The wind picked up, howling past my ears – whoosh! – making me clutch Abomasnow's fur tighter. I felt a surge of pure, unadulterated awe. To be so high, so exposed, yet so secure atop this magnificent Pokémon…
I gasped, the word stolen by the wind, "Incredible!"
My previous journeys, though filled with discovery, rarely presented such raw, visceral experiences. This was a shortcut born of necessity, but it felt like an adventure. I should do this more often!
Candice chuckled, her voice carrying over the wind, "See? Who needs those bulky parkas? We thin-clothed girls can show those boys what we're made of!"
Her remark was aimed at our relatively lighter attire compared to what one might expect in a blizzard, a playful jab that somehow injected a much-needed dose of lightheartedness into the grim reality.
Soon, Abomasnow reached the peak. With a final, powerful heave, it pulled itself over the lip of the cliff, setting us gently down on a wide, snowy plateau. The view from up here was breathtaking.
In the distance, between rolling hills blanketed in white, lay Lake Acuity – a vast, silent expanse of frozen water, shimmering under the pale winter sun. Candice recalled her partner Abomasnow and continued our trek across the plateau, the snow here deeper, untouched.
My mind drifted as we walked, a faint sense of déjà vu washing over me. I murmured, more to myself than to my companions, "This isn't the first time I've been to Lake Acuity. I… I think I forgot that until I visited here a long time ago."
The words felt strange on my tongue, like an old memory suddenly resurfacing. I paused, trying to grasp the elusive image, adding, "I remember seeing a figure of a Pokémon here, a long, long time ago. Like a… a mirage."
The memory was fleeting, indistinct, like trying to recall a dream. A ghost of a smile touched my lips, a memory of childhood wonder.
As we neared the lake, the silence grew heavier, the solemnity of the place palpable. I scanned the surroundings, my eyes sweeping across the frozen surface and the snow-laden trees that ringed it.
Everything seemed calm, undisturbed. I observed a flicker of hope rising within me, "It looks… quiet. Perhaps Team Galactic isn't here yet?"
Maylene's Riolu, however, was already on high alert. Its sensitive aura perception must have picked up something. It let out a low growl, its tiny ears twitching, "Woof!"
Then, Maylene herself gasped, pointing towards a cluster of trees near the lake's edge. She whispered, her voice tight with tension, "Did you see that? A flash of light!"
My gaze snapped to where she pointed. The light was gone, but Riolu instantly shot forward, its blue fur a streak against the white. It darted between the snow-laden trunks, its determination clear.
We followed, our initial hopes melting like snowflakes on a warm hand. And there it was. A small Pokémon, almost blending into the shadows of the trees, its dark body and multifaceted eyes glinting.
A Sableye?
It was digging at the base of a tree, with an almost casual air about it. Riolu didn't hesitate. With a fierce bark, it launched itself at the Sableye, a blur of motion.
Maylene commanded, "Riolu, Bullet Punch!"
*Fwoosh*
Riolu's paw glowed with Fighting-type energy, but Sableye was faster. With a guttural cackle, "Kya-ha-ha!"
*Wooosh—THWACK*
… it vanished, a ripple in the air, then reappeared behind Riolu, striking it with a shadowy claw. Riolu cried out in pain, stumbling forward. It was Shadow Sneak, a swift, deceptive move. Maylene cried, rushing towards her Pokémon, "Riolu, are you alright?!"
Candice murmured, "They're here…"
Candice's cheerful demeanor was replaced by a steely glint in her eyes. She reached for a Poké Ball, but before she could throw it…
*Slurp*
… a sudden, wet sound from beside her. My eyes widened in horror.
A slimy, blue-green creature with large eyes – a Gastrodon – had risen from a drift of snow, its mouth clamped tightly around Candice's extended hand!
*CRUNCH*
The Gym Leader let out a sharp cry of pain, her face contorting.
Before she could react further, the Gastrodon reared back its head, then spat a glob of thick, brown mud directly at her chest.
*SPLAT*
Candice staggered back, the mud instantly hardening around her, encasing her from the waist down in a rock-solid prison, "Ugh!"
Her hand was free, but throbbing, and she was utterly stuck. I exclaimed, rushing forward, "Candice!"
She warned, her voice strained as she struggled, "Wait! These Pokémon… they're not wild! They've been trained! Team Galactic… they've already arrived!"
Just as she finished, a woman's voice, smoothly authoritative and laced with a theatrical flourish, echoed through the quiet forest, "A wise girl, indeed. So perceptive."
A figure emerged from behind the trees, flanked by several Team Galactic Grunts. She was tall, with striking purple hair, a severe expression softened only by a predatory smirk. Her uniform was crisp, her presence commanding.
She announced, extending an arm dramatically, as if on a stage, "Stay for the show, hosted by Team Galactic's star performer, Jupiter!"
My heart plummeted. Jupiter. One of Team Galactic's Commanders.
I breathed, the name tasting like ash in my mouth, "Jupiter."
My companions, Gym Leaders Maylene and Candice, stood before her, one trapped, the other tending to her injured Riolu. Maylene growled, her focus shifting from Riolu to the Commander, "You won't get away with this! Riolu, use Force Palm to free Candice!"
Riolu, shaking off its pain, lunged towards Candice, its paw glowing with energy. But Jupiter was prepared to utter, "Not so fast, little pup. Gastrodon, Mud Bomb!"
*WHUMP*
The same Gastrodon that had attacked Candice earlier released another viscous projectile. This one was aimed directly at Riolu, knocking it back with sickening force.
The mud splattered but didn't harden, instead sending Riolu skidding several feet across the snow, groaning softly. Maylene cried, rushing to its side again, "Riolu, no!"
My chest tightened. We were losing the initiative quickly.
Candice was incapacitated, and Maylene and Riolu were struggling. It was up to me. A fierce resolve hardened my features.
I declared, pulling a Poké Ball from my belt, "We won't let you harm this lake, Jupiter! Empoleon, to battle!"
*WHOOSH*
My partner Pokémon, Empoleon, emerged in a flurry of blue and white, its regal crest gleaming menacingly. Its powerful cry that echoes through the trees, a challenge to our adversaries, "Empoleooon!"
But even as it materialized, Jupiter's Sableye, the one that had ambushed Riolu, was already moving. With a silent, shadow-like dart, it struck Empoleon before it could fully orient itself to react.
*SHING*
A swift claw across Empoleon's metal wing, a burst of dark energy. Empoleon recoiled, a low growl rumbling in its throat, but it was already wounded.
Jupiter's smirk widened as she gloated, "Foolish girl. You send out your partner just as it takes a hit. Such a waste of potential."
She extended her hand, pointing a manicured finger at us, and threatened, "Beware. You threaten Team Galactic's plans, and you will suffer the consequences."
Then, with another flourish, she threw a Poké Ball as she declared, "Tangrowth, let's see what you're made of!"
*THUD*
A colossal, blue, vine-covered Pokémon burst forth, its two massive arms ending in tangled masses of vines. Its single eye glowed with an eerie intensity. Tangrowth. I instantly recognized the powerful Grass-type.
I cried, a warning forming on my lips, "Wait! Tangrowth, it can be—!"
But it was too late. Jupiter merely smiled as she ordered, "Tangrowth, Flash!"
The Pokémon roared, "GRAAAOWW!"
*FLASH*
… and then, from the depths of its tangled vines, an impossibly bright light erupted. It wasn't just bright; it was blinding. A white-hot explosion of photons that seared my eyes, leaving me gasping and clutching my face.
Maylene cried out beside me, "Agh! My eyes!"
Candice, even stuck in the mud, winced, cursing under her breath. Empoleon cried out, momentarily disoriented by the sudden light.
In the aftermath of the flash, before my vision could even begin to clear, I felt a terrifying presence. Four distinct, cold, phantom-like impacts struck simultaneously.
*THWACK-THWACK-THWACK-THWACK*
One hit me squarely in the back, sending a jolt of pain through my spine. Another slammed into Empoleon, eliciting a pained gasp from my partner.
Maylene cried out as an unseen force struck her, and even Candice, still encased in mud, grunted as a blow connected. Sableye. It must have used four Shadow Sneaks, striking us all while we were blinded.
I staggered, my vision still swimming with spots. My head throbbed. Empoleon wobbled, its strong legs nearly giving out.
Maylene was on one knee, clutching her side. Riolu lay motionless beside her, obviously taken down by the combined assault. Candice, witnessing our predicament, let out a frustrated roar, "That's enough!"
*CRACK*
A loud, splitting sound echoed through the air as the mud encasing her shattered. With a burst of raw strength, Candice broke free, bits of hardened earth flying everywhere. She pulled another Poké Ball and declared, "Abomasnow, once more!"
*THWOOMPH*
Abomasnow was back, its imposing form a welcome sight.
Candice commanded, her voice ringing with newfound fury, "Abomasnow, ignore Sableye! Go directly for Tangrowth! Blizzard!"
Abomasnow let out a mighty bellow, "ABA-SNOW!"
*WOOOSH*
… and a swirling vortex of ice and wind began to churn around it, aimed squarely at Jupiter's Tangrowth. The temperature plummeted even further, making my teeth chatter. But Jupiter remained unfazed.
She smirked, countering, "How quaint. Tangrowth, Natural Gift!"
Tangrowth's vines lashed out, grabbing something from its own body – a small, purplish Bluk Berry. With an almost magical transformation, the berry glowed with a fiery aura, morphing into a blazing ball of pure flame.
*WHOOSH*
With incredible speed for its sheer size, Tangrowth hurled the fiery projectile directly at the oncoming Blizzard!
*CRACKLE*
The orb of fire tore through the icy gale, dissipating some of the Blizzard's force, but then it struck Abomasnow squarely, igniting its icy fur!
*FWOOSH*
Flames licked at Abomasnow's body, causing it to cry out in surprise and pain. Candice gasped, her eyes wide with shock, "Abomasnow! No! Natural Gift… such power!"
Jupiter merely smiled, then pointed a finger to the skies above Lake Acuity. She stated, "That, Gym Leader, is just a taste of power. Now, look up!"
My gaze, still a little blurry from the Flash, followed her direction.
Through the clearing in the trees, above the vast expanse of the frozen lake, three dark, sleek airships were descending. They hovered silently, their metallic hulls gleaming dully in the pale sunlight…
*BZZZZZZZT*
The low hum of their engines filled the air, a menacing sound that sent shivers down my spine. I whispered, the words catching in my throat, "The Galactic Bomb."
This was it. The moment of truth.
Jupiter, hearing me, gave another theatrical shrug. She chuckled, a cold, calculating sound as she explained, "Only one of our three crafts holds the bomb, little girl. And none of the Commanders know which lake will feel its full force. A delightful game of chance, wouldn't you agree?"
I felt a fresh wave of terror. Diamond, Pearl, and I were miles apart, facing different threats, and any one of us could be at the epicenter of the catastrophe.
What if the bomb were here?
What about the legendary Pokémon, Uxie?
What about everyone else?
Pushing through the lingering pain and the spots in my vision, I stumbled towards Candice and Maylene. Maylene was still tending to Riolu, who was slowly stirring.
Candice had recalled her singed Abomasnow, her face a mask of grim determination. I knelt beside Maylene, my hand on her shoulder.
We were helpless, forced to watch. Jupiter's voice cut through the tension, "Grunts! Get ready to capture Uxie! The time is nigh!"
*CLUNK-HISS*
Below the hovering airships, hatches began to open with a soft sound. Mechanical arms extended, clutching strange, cylindrical devices. My breath hitched. The countdown. It must be at zero.
A silence, thick and heavy, descended upon us. The only sounds were the distant hum of the airships and the frantic beating of my own heart. I held my breath, bracing for impact, for an earth-shattering explosion that would signal the end of everything. My eyes were fixed on the devices being lowered.
…
...?
Nothing.
A beat. Two beats.
Slowly, imperceptibly, Jupiter's confident smirk wavered. Her eyes narrowed, scanning the lake, then the aircraft. She muttered, a flicker of confusion crossing her face, "What…? Nothing happened. No detonation."
A sigh of annoyance escaped her lips as she muttered, "It seems Lake Acuity was not the target. One of the other lakes must have been struck by the bomb."
A wave of strange, conflicting emotions washed over me – relief that we were safe, guilt for the unknown fate of the other lakes, and a renewed sense of urgency. Then, the ground beneath us began to tremble...
*RUMBLE—RUMBLE*
It started subtly, a low thrum that vibrated through my bones, then intensified rapidly. The air itself began to shake, a deeper, resonating…
*WOOOMPH—CRACKS*
Snow dislodged from the trees, showering down around us. The ice on the lake cracked with sharp cracks that sounded like thunder. Jupiter's eyes widened, a new expression of avarice replacing her annoyance as she yelled, "What is this?!"
From the very heart of Lake Acuity, where the ice had cracked most violently, a dazzling, ethereal light began to rise. A soft, blue glow pulsed, growing brighter…
*WHOOSH*
The light coalesced, taking on a form – a small, grey, pixie-like Pokémon with wispy, feather-like tails and a crown of shining jewels. Its eyes were closed, yet it projected an aura of profound intellect and calm. Uxie.
I gasped, utterly mesmerized, "Uxie!"
It floated gracefully above the broken ice, a beacon of peace amidst the chaos. Candice, her voice incredulous, demanded, "If the lake hasn't been blown up, why did the guardian emerge?!"
Jupiter, her composure fully returned, let out a triumphant laugh as she boasted, "Ah, how poetic! An invisible bond connects the three Lake Pokémon, you see. Born from the same egg, it is said. If something happens to one of them, the other two can feel it. The guardian of the other lake must have called to Uxie for help, its pain echoing through their psychic link!"
She clenched her fist as she added, "Still, this will be the last time you see Uxie!"
Before I could react, Jupiter barked, "Tangrowth, grab it!"
Tangrowth lumbered forward, its massive vines extending with frightening speed, aiming to ensnare the unsuspecting Uxie. Candice was quicker this time as she blurted, "Froslass, Ice Beam!"
*THWOOMPH*
Candice's beautiful, icy Froslass materialized, a phantom in the snow. It launched a shimmering beam of ice towards Tangrowth. But Jupiter's Gastrodon, still lurking, was ready ordered, "Gastrodon, Stone Edge!"
*CRACKLE—KAPOW*
Jagged, sharp stones erupted from the ground, intercepting Froslass's attack and slamming directly into the Ice-type Pokémon. Froslass cried out, dissolving back into energy with a silent flicker, just as Candice recalled it.
Maylene, refusing to give up, pushed herself up. She quickly commanded, "Meditite, Power Swap!"
*FWIP*
Her Meditite, a small, bipedal Pokémon, appeared with an intense glare. It focused its psychic energy, exchanging its own power with Sableye's, weakening the Dark-type Pokémon while bolstering itself.
Then, with a fierce shout from Maylene, "Now, Rock Tomb!"
*CRASH—CRUNCH*
Meditite chanted, and suddenly, large, jagged rocks burst from the ground around Sableye, trapping it and slamming into it repeatedly. Sableye shrieked, obviously wounded, its dark form stumbling.
Jupiter applauded, a condescending smile on her face, "Excellent! Fascinating displays of power, Gym Leaders. Too bad they won't work much."
Her eyes narrowed as she ordered, "Sableye, Punishment!"
*BOOM*
Sableye, despite its injuries, retaliated with a terrifying burst of dark energy. The attack, powered by the number of stat boosts Meditite had gained, struck Meditite with brutal force. Maylene's Pokémon cried out, collapsing instantly.
Maylene rushed to its side, her face aghast, "Meditite!"
I was the only one left standing, my Empoleon panting heavily beside me, still recovering from the Shadow Sneaks. Jupiter's cold gaze fell upon me, and she uttered, "And you, little girl. Whatever you do, it will not affect our plans."
Above us, one of the air shuttles emitted a powerful, shimmering restraint beam, like a tractor beam but designed to hold Pokémon.
*BWOOOM—WHIZZ*
Tangrowth, with its massive vines, carefully placed the still-floating Uxie into the beam's grasp. Then, from the same shuttle, a net, thick and woven from what looked like reinforced steel, descended.
It snapped shut around Uxie, drawing the unconscious Pokémon upwards.
*Bdmp*
My heart pounded. Uxie!
They were going to capture it!
I shouted, desperation fueling my every move, "No! I won't let you! Rapidash, burn down that net!"
*FOOM*
My Rapidash, a magnificent Fire-type Pokémon with a blazing mane and tail, burst from its Poké Ball, galloping across the snow with surprising speed, its hooves leaving trails of flame. It reared back, ready to unleash a torrent of fire.
Jupiter scoffed, unimpressed as she commanded dismissively, "Naïve. I am here to carry out the plans, not to be deterred by a mere child! Tangrowth, Natural Gift, again!"
*THWAP*
Tangrowth once more grabbed a berry, this time a Chesto Berry, which glowed with a vibrant grass-green energy. It hurled the green orb at Rapidash.
The impact was immense, blowing Rapidash away in a surge of powerful energy, sending it skidding and collapsing into a snowdrift.
My voice cracked, "Rapidash! No!"
I watched in despair as the net continued to ascend, Uxie trapped within its cruel grasp. My Pokémon were defeated, my friends were injured, and the legendary guardian of knowledge was being stolen right before my eyes. A wave of profound sadness washed over me, heavy and suffocating.
*Clang*
A sharp, metallic sound, distinct and powerful, echoed through the air. My head snapped up, my eyes wide. The net, just as it was being pulled into the shuttle, was suddenly severed!
One of the thick, steel ropes holding it snapped, curling violently upwards…
*WHOOSH*
A powerful gust of wind swept through the area. And then I saw it. A majestic, powerful Dragonite, its powerful wings beating the air with incredible force, hovered triumphantly beside the disabled net.
Its claws, still glowing with residual energy, had clearly delivered the blow. Riding on its back, silhouetted against the pale winter sky, was a familiar figure. A young man, his hair swept back by the wind, his eyes keen and focused.
A small Pikachu was perched on his shoulder, an Eevee on his head, and I could just make out the tiny ears of a Pichu peeking from his jacket pocket. My eyes widened further.
The despair that had gripped me moments before was replaced by a surge of disbelief, then overwhelming relief.
I gasped, the name a fractured whisper of hope, "Azure!"
Jupiter, her face a mask of furious disbelief, stomped her foot. Her voice was laced with pure, unadulterated venom, "Blast it all! Azure Sky! Of all the rotten luck! I had to be the one to draw him!!"
Azure, riding his Dragonite, looked down at us, his gaze sweeping over the scene, taking in the injured Pokémon, the trapped Uxie, and Jupiter's enraged face. He offered a small, reassuring smile, a silent promise.
Dragonite let out a powerful roar signaling that the fight was far from over, "DRAOOOOARR! (You done fucked up now!)."
