Zoe's POV
The fluorescent lights hummed softly above the interrogation wing.
Everything inside the police station felt unnaturally clean.
Too clean.
The polished floors reflected every overhead light, and every footstep echoed down the narrow corridor as though the building wanted everyone to remember exactly where they were.
Mr. Donovan walked beside me without saying much.
Two uniformed officers led the way.
I couldn't feel my legs.
I was walking.
I knew I was.
But it felt as though my body had separated from my mind somewhere between the entrance and this hallway.
The closer we got, the harder my heart pounded.
Every step seemed louder than the last, echoing through the long corridor until I could no longer tell whether the sound belonged to our footsteps or the frantic beating inside my chest.
A heavy metal door groaned somewhere ahead before swinging open.
The sharp screech of old hinges sent a shiver crawling up my spine.
