Zoe's POV
My knees threatened to buckle beneath me.
The moment the interrogation room door closed behind Margaret, the strength I'd been holding onto simply... disappeared.
I grabbed the edge of the metal table before I collapsed.
The room tilted violently.
The fluorescent lights blurred into long white streaks above me, and my breathing came in short, uneven gasps that refused to steady no matter how hard I tried.
"Zoe."
Mr. Donovan was beside me almost immediately.
His voice sounded distant, as though I were hearing it through water.
"Look at me."
I tried.
I really did.
But all I could hear was Margaret's voice.
You're not Chloe.
You just answered me.
We'll continue this in court.
Every word replayed inside my head like a broken recording.
"Zoe."
A warm hand rested lightly on my shoulder.
"Can you hear me?"
I blinked.
Slowly.
The room came back into focus.
"I..."
My voice cracked.
"I think I'm going to faint."
"You won't."
His tone remained calm.
