Chapter 686 - Chaper 542

The Quiloa Ruins rose from the shallow waters like the bones of a forgotten god, their coral-rag walls gleaming with centuries of salt and memory. The air hung thick and heavy, saturated with the tang of brine and the sweet decay of mangrove roots that had claimed the ancient stones as their own. The sun beat down from a hazy sky, its rays filtering through the mist that coiled around the crumbling structures like a living shroud.

Charlie Leonard Wooley scrambled up the slick stone path with the reckless enthusiasm, forgetting that his body was not made of the same indestructible material as his curiosity. His pith helmet bounced on his head, his khaki shirt was already soaked with sweat and spray, and his satchel banged against his hip with each frantic step. His round wire-framed glasses had fogged up, but he didn't notice—couldn't notice—because his eyes were fixed on the impossible architecture rising before him.

"This is—this is—" His voice cracked with excitement as he reached the top, his jaw slack as he took in the sprawling ruins. The Great Mosque dominated the eastern edge of the islet, its domes miraculously intact despite centuries of pounding waves. Mangrove roots thicker than a man's torso wove through its arches like solidified muscle, splitting the coral stone in some places while desperately holding it together in others. The Palace of Husuni Kubwa rose in the distance, its skeletal tower piercing the sky like a finger of judgment.

Tori Torte scrambled up behind him, her river otter form slick with sea spray, her whiskers twitching with a mixture of exhaustion and exasperation. She buckled over, panting, her words tumbling out in a breathless rush. "You need to be careful! These ruins are old and—"

But Charlie didn't hear her. He stood frozen, his eyes taking in every detail, his mind already cataloging, analyzing, understanding. His voice was barely a whisper. "This is... this is..."

He looked over his shoulder as the others lumbered up the narrow path. Galit Varuna moved with the fluid grace of his serpentine heritage, his long neck bent in that characteristic S-curve, his emerald eyes scanning the ruins with tactical assessment. Kaburo Gusaki followed close behind, his dark hair falling across his face, his hand resting on the hilt of Kalamaru with the casual readiness, expecting trouble at any moment. General Tora Afar brought up the rear, her massive water buffalo frame a monument of controlled power, her dark eyes sweeping the ruins with, practiced assessment, a soldier who had guarded borders her entire life. Lieutenant Oak Paiko moved beside her, his okapi frame lean and watchful, his large ears swiveling to catch every sound. Major Tala Frawalda bounced along behind them, her aardwolf form practically vibrating with barely contained energy.

Unable to contain his excitement any longer, Charlie spun around, his voice echoing across the ruins. "This is amazing!" He pointed toward the Palace of Husuni Kubwa, his arm sweeping in a grand gesture. "I'm going in!"

Without waiting for a response, he was off, his pith helmet bouncing as he scrambled toward the ancient structure. Tori, still catching her breath, looked over her shoulder at the others, her eyes going wide as she realized Charlie had already vanished into the maze of ruins. "Wait!" she called out, chasing after him. "Wait for me!"

---

Galit watched the otter Mink disappear into the ruins, a bemused smile tugging at his lips. He glanced at Tora, who had fallen into step beside him. "He is a bit..."

Galit cut her off, his voice carrying the dry humor. "Excited? Yes, we know."

Tala chuckled, her striped mane bristling with amusement. "If he only knew about the rest of the island, I don't know if he would be able to contain himself."

Galit shook his head, his emerald eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "Let's not tell him. We might not be able to get him to leave."

Tora's voice carried, warmth, appreciating passion in all its forms. "It is refreshing to see someone this passionate about our origins."

Kaburo's voice cut through the conversation, flat and practical. "We best not get left behind. He is likely to wake something up by accident."

As if summoned by his words, Tori rushed back to them, her whiskers twitching with barely contained anxiety. "Um, you better come quick!" She pointed toward the palace, her voice rising with urgency. "I think he found something."

Galit raised a brow. "Found something?"

Tori shrugged, her ears flattening with nervous energy. "But I don't know because he was talking too fast."

Oak glanced at Kaburo, with quiet amusement, expecting the unexpected. "What was it you were saying about him finding something?"

Galit's spoke with flat resignation, accepting his fate. "Come on." He took the lead, his long neck bent forward as he strode into the Husuni Kubwa. "Let's go see what he's broken."

---

The interior of the Palace of the Great Tower was a labyrinth of mangrove roots and crumbling stone. The air was thick with moisture, carrying the scent of ancient decay and the faint, metallic tang of seawater that had seeped into every crack and crevice. The walls bore carvings that had been worn smooth by centuries of wind and tide, their stories half-erased by the relentless passage of time.

Charlie's voice echoed through the maze, bouncing off the stone walls with the manic energy as if her had found his holy grail. "Remarkable! Absolutely remarkable!"

Tori jumped out front, waving her arms to guide them. "This way! He's in here!"

They rounded a corner and paused. A looming ancient staircase rose before them, its steps worn smooth by centuries of feet—feet that should not have been there. The stairs descended into darkness, their depths swallowing the light.

Tora froze, her dark eyes fixed on the staircase. Her voice was certain, as if she had memorized every inch of these ruins. "That was there before?"

Galit raised a brow, his emerald eyes narrowing with suspicion. "Are you sure?"

Tori interrupted, with nervous energy of a guide that discovered something she was never supposed to find. "She is right. That is part of what he found." She pointed at a faded inscription carved into the stone archway above the stairs. "He read this and found the passage."

Oak stepped forward, his dark eyes scanning the inscription. With the quiet curiosity of a scholar recognizing the unfamiliar. "You can read this?"

Galit sighed, his voice flat. "We cannot. But members of our crew can."

Tala's impressed with surprise. "Impressive." Without waiting for further discussion, she took the lead, her aardwolf form descending into the darkness with the confidence of a soldier who had faced far worse than a forgotten staircase.
