The sea stretches in all directions, but it's no longer the blue of open water or the green of shallow shoals. It's gray. Gray that moves, gray that breathes, gray that curls upward from the surface in slow, deliberate tendrils that reach toward the Sunny like fingers testing the temperature of something they intend to consume.
Jinbe's hands tighten on the wheel, his massive knuckles standing out like stones beneath his blue skin. His gills flutter, pulling in air that tastes of salt and something else—something old and patient and hungry.
"It's surrounding us." His voice carries the weight of a man who recognizes danger not by sight but by the way the world holds its breath.
He glances over his shoulder at Nami, his dark eyes carrying an apology for what he's about to admit. "It came out of nowhere."
Zoro is already on his feet, his hand resting on the hilt of Enma, his body balanced on the balls of his feet. The fog creeps across the deck like a living thing, tendrils curling around the mast, sliding over the railings, reaching for ankles and wrists with cold, damp fingers.
"Everyone get ready!" Zoro's voice cuts through the oppressive quiet. "This is no ordinary fog."
Below deck, chaos erupts as Luffy, Usopp, Yamato, and Franky stumble up the stairs, their footsteps a drumroll of urgency. They burst onto the deck, eyes wide, bodies tense, ready for whatever threat has summoned them.
Sanji's hand remains in his pocket, his posture deliberately casual as he exhales a stream of smoke that mingles with the gray pressing in from all sides. "Nice of you to join us, captain."
Luffy ignores him completely, his sandals slapping against the wood as he sprints to the prow. Yamato follows close behind, her club already in her hands, her eyes scanning the fog for threats.
"Ew! What is this?" Luffy waves his hand through a tendril of mist, his face scrunched in confusion.
"It's some sort of fog, you idiot!" Nami snaps, her Clima-Tact already in her grip.
Brook's voice floats from somewhere near the mast, his tone carrying that particular mix of observation and theatricality that defines everything he does. "And it's completely surrounded us. Rather rude, if you ask me. Though nobody did, yohohoho!"
Franky strides to the railing, leaning over to peer into the gray depths. His massive frame blocks a portion of the fog from view, but what he sees doesn't seem to impress him. "It looks like regular fog to me."
Usopp's knees have begun to shake, his long nose twitching as he takes in the sight of the walls of gray pressing ever closer. "I think I have... I can't go into the fog disease..."
Chopper bounces on his hooves, his small body vibrating with a mixture of fear and excitement. "Me too! Me too!"
Jinbe's voice rumbles through the deck like distant thunder. "This is no ordinary fog."
The words settle over the crew like a shroud.
---
Silence.
The kind of silence that makes you aware of your own heartbeat, your own breathing, the subtle sounds your body makes that you never notice until there's nothing else to hear. The waves lap against the Sunny's hull with soft, wet sounds that seem too loud in the absence of wind, absent of birds, absent of anything but gray and the slow creak of wood.
The crew stands frozen, every eye scanning the fog, every hand ready to act.
The silence breaks with a screech that shatters the quiet like glass.
"It's a skeleton!"
Usopp is already moving, his shaking legs carrying him toward the deck's tree with the desperate speed of a man who has seen too many horror movies to stick around for the sequel. He scrambles up the trunk, his voice carrying back down with perfect clarity. "A SKELETON!"
Brook's head snaps up, his jaw dropping open. "What?! A skeleton?! OH NO!"
Sanji whirls on him, his visible eye twitching with the particular frustration that only Brook can inspire. "You are a skeleton!"
Nami's screech joins the chorus, her voice climbing toward a pitch that could shatter glass. "What the hell!"
Skeletal figures begin to climb over the railing.
They move with a jerky, unnatural gait, their bones clicking and rattling with each step. Empty eye sockets scan the deck with hollow hunger, and their jaws hang open in silent screams or silent laughter—it's impossible to tell which. There are dozens of them, rising from the fog like drowned sailors returning to the surface, their yellowed bones gleaming wetly in the strange light.
Sanji leaps from his position, his body arcing through the air with the grace of a predator. He lands on the railing, balanced on the balls of his feet, his arms spread for combat. "Don't worry, Nami! I'll protect you!"
"Protect me too!" Chopper's voice pipes up from somewhere behind him.
Sanji launches a kick at the nearest skeleton, his leg cutting through the air with enough force to shatter stone. His foot passes through the skeleton's ribcage like it's passing through smoke, and he spins out of control, arms windmilling, barely catching himself on the railing before he plummets into the fog.
Zoro's voice cuts through the chaos, sharp and mocking. "What the hell are you doing, you stupid cook?! Did you miss? Don't know how to aim?"
Sanji lands on the deck, his face twisted with fury. "Shut up, moss head!"
The skeletons continue their advance, more of them climbing over the railing with each passing second. Their bones click against the wood, their empty eye sockets fixed on the crew with impossible hunger.
Luffy's fists stretch back, his arms coiling like springs. "GUM! GUM!"
His punch launches forward, his fist expanding as it flies toward the nearest skeleton. It passes through the figure's skull, through its ribcage, through its pelvis, and slams into the mast behind it. Luffy stops, tilting his head, his expression shifting from battle-ready to confused.
Yamato steps up beside him, her club raised. "What is it?"
Luffy walks toward the skeleton, his sandals tapping against the deck. He waves his hand through its skull, back and forth, in and out, his face a mask of childish curiosity. He looks over his shoulder at his crew, and a grin spreads across his face.
"Hey, guys! Look!"
Robin's hand rises to her chin, her fingers tapping against her jaw as she studies the figures with academic interest. "It appears they are not real."
Luffy laughs, his voice bright and genuine. "This is kinda fun!"
Yamato rushes forward, her eyes alight with excitement. "Let me try!"
Luffy turns to his crew, his arms spread wide, his grin wide enough to split his face. "Maybe they want to be friends!" He pivots back to the skeleton, leaning in close, his face inches from its empty skull. "You want to join the crew?"
Nami's voice cracks with exasperation. "What are you doing?!"
Luffy looks back at her with a blank expression, genuinely confused by her reaction. "What? Maybe they're looking for a crew to join."
Brook steps up beside his captain, his skeletal jaw somehow conveying wistfulness. "It might be nice to have more than one skeleton on the crew."
The words hang in the air.
---
DONG.
The sound hits like a physical blow.
DONG.
The crew's hands fly to their ears. The sound is everywhere—inside their skulls, inside their chests, inside their bones. It resonates with a frequency that makes teeth ache and vision swim.
DONG.
DONG.
DONG.
DONG.
DONG.
DONG.
The deck vibrates beneath their feet. The mast sways. The fog pulses with each impact, waves of gray rolling outward from some unseen source.
Jinbe's head tilts back, his eyes fixed on something above. His mouth opens, but no sound comes out. His massive frame trembles, his hands falling away from the wheel as if the wood has become too hot to touch.
"Oh no," he whispers. "It can't be."
Zoro's head snaps toward him, his hand on Enma's hilt, his body coiled for action. "What is it?"
Jinbe's eyes are wide, his jaw slack, his expression carrying something the crew has never seen on his face before. Fear.
"It's..."
The air crackles. Black lightning arcs across the deck, splitting the gray with veins of darkness. Zoro's body floods with Haki, his muscles tensing, his senses screaming warnings that bypass conscious thought.
"Something is coming!"
Luffy cracks his knuckles, his grin returning, wider than before, sharper than before. A laugh bubbles up from somewhere deep in his chest—a laugh that carries the weight of absolute confidence and absolute joy.
"BRING IT!"
His body transforms. White floods through his form like milk through coffee, his clothes bleaching, his hair shifting, his features sharpening into something that exists beyond the boundaries of ordinary reality. Steam rises from his skin, curling upward into the fog.
Nami's voice splits the air. "LUFFY!"
He's already gone, leaping into the air, disappearing into the gray embrace of the fog above. His laughter echoes behind him, bouncing off the invisible walls of their prison.
A shadow passes over the deck.
BOOM.
The sky splits.
The sound is beyond thunder—it's the sound of reality tearing at the seams, of something fundamental giving way. The Straw Hats are thrown from their feet, railings ripping free, balconies splintering, the Sunny rocking violently in the churning sea.
Jinbe's hands find the wheel again, his massive arms straining to hold the ship steady. "Hold on!"
Usopp's voice climbs toward hysteria. "What's happening?!"
Zoro rounds on Jinbe, his eyes blazing. "You know something!"
Jinbe opens his mouth to answer.
The Sunny stops.
The ship freezes in place as if grabbed by a massive hand, as if the sea itself has become solid stone. The crew scrambles to their feet, weapons drawn, bodies pressed together in a tight circle of readiness.
Fifteen silhouettes materialize on the railings.
They stand in perfect stillness, their shapes varied and strange—some tall, some short, some broad, some thin. The fog clings to them like cloaks, obscuring details, but their presence is undeniable. They are here. They are watching. They are waiting.
A laugh echoes through the gray—a deviant cackle that bounces off invisible walls, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.
Jinbe's voice booms across the deck, carrying all the authority of a man who has faced emperors and monsters. "What is your business here?!"
Sanji's eyes remain fixed on the silhouettes, his body balanced for combat. "Do you know them?"
Jinbe shakes his head, his attention never wavering from the figures. "We have no..."
A light flashes.
Everyone looks up.
"GUM!"
The voice comes from above, from somewhere in the fog, from somewhere beyond the gray.
"GUM!"
Thunder.
Lightning crackles, splitting the sky, illuminating the silhouettes on the railing in stark white relief. Zoro's voice rises above the chaos, raw with emotion. "LUFFY!"
The silhouettes descend.
