The story of the First Avatar — of Raava and Vaatu, of their eternal war — was shocking enough. And the massive, chaotic negative energy surrounding Vaatu's seal was undeniably terrifying.
But stopping a world war was not something that could be done overnight.
For now, Kahn had more immediate matters to handle.
Asking a Favor
"East, South, West, and North — I came this time to ask a favor from you four."
Kahn spoke seriously.
After spending so much time together, they were already good friends. On that basis, he finally felt comfortable enough to ask for their help.
To reach the Eastern Air Temple safely — and without attracting attention — he could only rely on these four spirits.
Although the Avatar had sealed the passage between the two worlds, humans and spirits never completely lost contact.
Spiritbenders like Kahn could cross between realms, and powerful spirits could travel freely on their own, like the Face Stealer or the Mother of Faces.
The four dragon-birds looked like cute, harmless little creatures. Individually, their strength wasn't remarkable — but in truth, they were formidable spirits.
As symbiotic beings, much like Raava and Vaatu, their true power only emerged when they combined into one.
Kahn explained his situation and his request in detail. But instead of responding directly, the four spirits suddenly latched onto something else entirely.
"So… we're going to the human world?"
"It's been ages. I wonder what it looks like now."
"But humans are rude."
"Unless Kahn takes us to go play, right?"
The conversation quickly drifted off-topic.
Kahn watched them with silent amusement — then jumped in at just the right moment.
"If you help me, I'll take you to play in the human world," he said smoothly.
He continued, "The human world has changed a lot. The city I live in might even be the most prosperous place in the world — lively markets, amazing food, rare treasures from everywhere. You'll love it."
The four spirits were visibly swayed, though still unsure.
"But other humans…"
Kahn immediately patted his chest.
"Calm down. If I'm with you, no one will dare disrespect you. I'm a Spiritbender."
"It has been a long time since we visited."
"And I want to compare human cakes with spirit cakes!"
"With Kahn there, I'm not worried."
"Then let's go!"
And just like that, the deal was made — they'd help him, and he'd show them the human world.
Azula Meets the Dragon-Birds
"These little birds are spirits? Are you serious?"
Azula stared suspiciously at the four, reaching out to poke West — who dodged instantly.
"Of course I'm serious. Be polite, Azula. They understand everything you say."
Seeing her try again, Kahn quickly pulled her hand back.
"Tsk. Fine. They're pretty, I guess."
Kahn introduced them properly:
"Don't worry, they're friendly. Azula, this is East, South, West, and North. Guys, this is Azula."
Azula lifted her chin, clearly seeing no difference between them but humoring Kahn anyway.
"Uh… hello? Do you need a handshake?"
The four spirits chirped, unmoving.
"Guess not."
Azula lowered her hand.
Although the first exchange was awkward, she quickly realized the spirits really could understand human speech.
Unfortunately, she couldn't understand their language, so she stood straighter and examined them more carefully.
"Are you sure they can actually help us?" she asked.
"You don't need to worry about that," Kahn replied confidently. "But before they help, I need to take them out to play. Want to come along?"
Azula frowned.
"Play? Like what?"
"Strolling. Eating. Watching stuff. Talking. When was the last time we did something like that?"
He paused, thinking.
Actually… never.
Azula had always found ordinary activities beneath her. She only enjoyed things that were exciting, intense, or competitive.
But when Kahn invited her personally — she froze.
Us? Together? Walking, eating… isn't that basically a—
She coughed sharply.
"Well… since you're sincerely inviting… cough I mean, it's okay to do this once in a while. Sure."
Kahn gave her a weird look but didn't comment.
Azula's quirks? He was used to them.
A Day Out — and Azula's Mysterious Mood
The Fire Nation marketplace was bustling as always. Even a simple stroll became interesting thanks to the endless stream of exotic goods and rare items.
Azula, however, behaved strangely. She tried her best to act… normal. But the attempt was terrible — stiff, awkward, and unnatural.
Kahn couldn't help commenting.
"Azula… what are you doing? Your acting is awful."
The words had barely left his mouth when Azula's expression snapped. She kicked him — hard — several times in the shin.
Kahn gasped in pain, completely confused.
What was she angry about now?
He didn't know, but he still apologized and spent the next half-hour coaxing her back into a good mood.
Women, he sighed inwardly. Even Azula.
Taking the Spirits to the Human World
The four dragon-birds, meanwhile, were far easier to handle.
Having not visited the human world for countless years, they were instantly overwhelmed by the market's noise, lights, and crowds.
They shifted into invisible spirit forms and zipped around freely.
Whenever they found something they liked, Kahn bought it without hesitation. Being wealthy had its perks.
By the time they returned home, Kahn was loaded down with giant bags of purchases.
The four immediately materialized, diving excitedly into the piles of items — chirping and squeaking happily.
They didn't even want to return to the Spirit World that night.
Kahn watched them with a satisfied smile.
Plan accomplished.
