The "dragon-birds" — that was their collective name, and it suited them perfectly.
East, South, West, and North were the nicknames Kahn gave them. Although the names sounded a bit perfunctory, the little spirits genuinely liked them.
Their first meeting was surprisingly ordinary. Ever since Kahn shifted his focus toward finding companions in the Spirit World, he often wandered around whenever he entered.
The four spirits of East, South, West, and North were lively by nature, and because their dwelling wasn't far from the place where Iroh had rooted himself for so many years, they encountered each other by chance.
After the Avatar sealed the passage between the Human Realm and the Spirit World, the only humans who could still travel back and forth — other than the Avatar — were the extremely rare Spiritbenders.
Thus, when Kahn appeared, the four little spirits were instantly curious.
Kahn was friendly as always. Finding them adorable, he casually offered them some spirit biscuits — and that was the start of their friendship.
Spirit biscuits were exactly what the name implied: biscuits made inside the Spirit World with spirit ingredients and tools provided by Iroh and his spirit friends.
Because everything in the Spirit World exists in a state of "constancy," the biscuits couldn't make you fat, nor did they increase strength. They were simply delicious.
Whenever Kahn visited, he followed the tradition of his "predecessors," carrying small snacks with him in hopes of meeting new spirits.
The method worked flawlessly — one more thing he admired his predecessors for.
Because their home was close to Iroh's, they grew familiar quickly.
Kahn continued bringing snacks, shared interesting stories from the Human Realm, and before long, their relationship became genuinely warm.
He also introduced them to Iroh and the other spirits, and the dragon-birds were welcomed there as well.
But no matter how friendly they became with others, Kahn was always their favorite.
Whenever he arrived, the four would immediately fly over and occupy him — West perched on both of his shoulders, while South and North nested on top of his head, looking adorably ridiculous.
Through these four spirits, Kahn also learned many things he had never even imagined.
The birth of the Avatar was a puzzle spread over thousands of years. Even written records had long turned blurry and contradictory.
But to eternal spirits, time meant nothing — events thousands of years old could feel like yesterday.
Through their chatter, Kahn finally learned the truth behind the Avatar's origin:
The Avatar was not purely human. The first Avatar, Wan, merged with the Light Spirit Raava to defeat the Darkness Spirit, Vaatu.
As the four argued loudly — each with their own version of the story, none of which matched — Iroh eventually walked over, laughing to himself.
"I happen to know a bit about this," he said.
Kahn could only stare at him.
"How do you know everything?"
"Haha, after living this long, isn't it normal to know more than others?"
And so, Iroh began.
Raava and Vaatu — the Light Spirit and the Darkness Spirit — were ancient twin spirits locked in endless battle.
When Raava won, the world basked in peace and clarity for ten thousand years. When Vaatu won, the world fell into chaos and darkness for ten thousand years.
After each cycle, the defeated spirit would be reborn inside the victor, and the struggle would begin anew.
But for humanity, ten thousand years of darkness would be more than enough to destroy civilization several times over.
Wan, before becoming the Avatar, was just an ordinary man.
During his travels, he accidentally interfered with Raava and Vaatu's eternal battle. Tricked by Vaatu, Wan inadvertently unleashed chaos upon the world.
To atone, he joined Raava and began seeking a way to defeat Vaatu. Several spirits granted him the four elemental bendings, making him unmatched among humans.
Still, it wasn't enough.
Only when Wan merged completely with Raava did they gain the power to subdue Vaatu. But even then, they couldn't destroy him — only seal him.
Wan sealed Vaatu in the Spirit World and also sealed the passage between the two realms to prevent anyone from unleashing the Darkness Spirit again.
From that day on, every Avatar carried Raava's light and the responsibility of maintaining balance.
When the story ended, Kahn's eyelids twitched.
"You're telling me… Vaatu is literally sealed in the Spirit World?"
"That's right," Iroh said. "If you want, I can take you to see the place from afar — but you must not get too close."
His tone grew heavy.
"The century-long war has created an overwhelming amount of negative energy. The spirits near Vaatu's seal have become dangerously chaotic. Even passing by can affect you."
East, South, West, and North all squeaked in panic:
"That's right, that's right!"
"It's way too dangerous!"
"No spirit dares to go near that place!"
"Kahn, don't go!"
"Relax," Kahn said. "I'm not the type to go looking for death."
Watching danger from afar was one thing. Getting swallowed by it was another.
But after hearing Iroh's warning, his heart grew heavy.
"If the negative energy is that severe… then Vaatu's seal—?"
"I don't know," Iroh admitted. "The Avatar's seal still holds for now, but who knows how long it will last? Without the Avatar, no one can stop Vaatu."
Kahn felt a chill run down his spine.
If Vaatu escaped — with this much negative energy fueling him — the world would collapse long before anyone could stop him.
Later, Iroh still brought Kahn to see the sealed area from a distance.
The chaotic spirits swirling around it were so unsettling that even glancing at them from afar made him uncomfortable.
In that moment, Kahn understood with absolute clarity:
This war must end — and soon.
If the world ended before they even finished fighting… that would be the dumbest tragedy imaginable.
