Chapter 92 - Chapter 91: Path of Cultivating the Mind

Guru Pathik was thin, with dark skin and a bald head, paired with a thick grizzled beard that made him resemble a high monk from the Indian region of his homeland.

Despite being over a hundred years old, his eyes were bright, and his smile carried warmth and humor.

There was no doubt—this was Guru Pathik.

But the way he had greeted Kahn made Kahn's heart lurch.

Though filled with confusion and anxiety, Kahn composed himself and introduced himself politely.

"Hello, Guru. My name is Kahn. I've come to learn Spiritbending from you. You said earlier that I'm a 'special Spiritbender.' Why do you call me that?"

"Mm, a very polite child," Guru Pathik said, nodding with satisfaction.

"My name is Guru Pathik. I'm happy to offer guidance to you. And to our four honored guests—the ancient spirits—it is a pleasure to meet you."

East, South, West, and North chirped cheerfully in response. They felt no fear toward this old man. In fact, he radiated a warmth that calmed them.

"As for why I call you special…"

Guru Pathik smiled as he produced a bowl filled with an unknown liquid and handed it to Kahn.

"Before I tell you that story, drink this. It will help calm the turbulence in your mind."

Kahn accepted the bowl with both hands. The moment he lifted it to his nose, he recoiled.

"I smell… onions? And bananas?"

"Of course," Guru Pathik said proudly. "It is onion-banana juice. Trust me—it is a Spiritbender's trusty companion."

To prove it, the old guru lifted an identical bowl and drank it in one go, smacking his lips afterward as if savoring fine wine.

"…"

Kahn stared blankly. Despite severe doubts, he forced himself to take a gulp.

The taste hit him like a physical blow.

"Ugh—!"

The horrid flavor clung to his tongue. But strangely enough, his anxiety and fear did lighten—replaced by a swirling nausea in his mind.

"Congratulations! You've taken your first step in Spiritbender training!"

Guru Pathik grinned mischievously, like a playful old child.

Kahn wiped his mouth helplessly.

"Thank you… I hope this is useful and not just a prank."

"No prank. In time, you'll appreciate its wonders."

Guru Pathik folded his hands and finally addressed the real matter.

"I've known about you for quite some time. Well… not too long—perhaps three or four years."

That single sentence made Kahn stiffen.

Three or four years ago…

That was when he had transmigrated into this world.

"Let me say first, I'm not the type to pry into everything," Pathik said. "Though I admit that once, long ago, I rather enjoyed doing so." He chuckled.

"At the time, I believed the Avatar had awakened. So I followed that signal. That's when I saw you."

He shook his head lightly, "Clearly, I misjudged. But you and the Avatar are strangely similar. You both possess a special kind of soul."

The Avatar was the fusion of Raava and Human (Wan)—two spirits in one being.

Kahn himself was also the fusion of two souls.

From that perspective, they really were similar.

Those few sentences alone had already pierced near the heart of his greatest secret.

Kahn's thoughts tangled violently. He had prepared for the worst, but facing it directly still left him shaken.

After a long silence, Kahn managed to ask, voice tight.

"So… you've been monitoring me? Watching everything I do?"

"Monitoring you? No, no, no." Guru Pathik shook his head gently.

"Once I realized you weren't the Avatar, I stopped paying attention. Until now, when you came here on your own."

Kahn frowned, clearly unconvinced.

"But since you know I'm… unusual, how could you simply—"

"Do not fall into fixed mindsets," Guru Pathik interrupted. "They tighten your thinking."

He smiled softly.

"You are special. Unique. But so what? What does that have to do with me?"

Kahn paused.

"Firebenders, the great spirits, the Avatar… There are countless special beings in this world," Pathik continued.

"Some hold the power to shape the world's destiny—like the Avatar. Or Vaatu, the Spirit of Darkness. Or the Lion Turtles of ancient times."

"Compared to them, how significant is your uniqueness?"

"And besides—every spirit, every person, every animal, every plant… all are unique. What makes you different from them?"

He chuckled.

"If I had to keep track of every 'special' being, I would have no time to breathe."

Hearing this, Kahn finally relaxed. Guru Pathik's perspective—and Kahn's own earlier reasoning—aligned. He had simply panicked.

Guru Pathik suddenly asked.

"Since you know what I am capable of… and you understand your own uniqueness… why did you still choose to come face me?"

Now that he had composed himself, Kahn answered calmly:

"Although I know I'm different, I still don't understand the reason behind it. But my actions have been upright, and my conscience is clear. I have nothing to regret, so I should not fear."

He hesitated, then admitted.

"Also… I was afraid you might use my secret against me. So I voluntarily told a friend beforehand. Once I did… it didn't feel as frightening anymore."

"You voluntarily shared your greatest secret with a friend?" Guru Pathik blinked in surprise—and then nodded with sincere admiration.

"To be honest, that is remarkable. From that alone, I'm certain you're suited to learning Spiritbending."

Kahn suspected sarcasm. Even he felt his decision had been reckless.

But Guru Pathik shook his head.

"No sarcasm. Truly—being brave enough to reveal a secret is a sign of a strong heart."

He sighed softly.

"Spiritbenders cultivate the mind. Clarity is everything. A secret you refuse to face becomes a knot in your heart. A knot becomes an obstruction. It hinders the growth of your thoughts."

His eyes dimmed slightly as he added:

"I once had a disciple who kept everything bottled up. Though he had talent, he could never progress. His own heart held him back."

Kahn paused.

That description…

It sounded oddly familiar.

Someone he knew?

Someone very familiar?

The thought hung in his mind.
