Kahn began to study Spiritbending under Guru Pathik. In this area, he showed considerable talent, mastering some simple applications within just a few days.
For example—
Kahn sat cross-legged on the mountaintop, eyes closed in meditation. Though his eyes were shut, the sights he perceived became far more numerous.
He saw Guru Pathik observing him from behind, ants queuing to carry food across the grass, the temple glinting like gold under the sun, and the comings and goings of people moving through the complex.
Everything has a spirit, and a Spiritbender can use these spirits as their own eyes—observing the world, seeking benefits, and avoiding harm.
No matter what Guru Pathik called this ability, Kahn chose to name it Heavenly Eye Vision.
The observation range of Heavenly Eye Vision depends on the strength of the Spiritbender's own spirit.
Currently, Kahn could only observe the entire East Air Temple complex—a range spanning a few mountain peaks.
It sounded impressive, yet it was far from Guru Pathik's level, where he could see all things and know all affairs without leaving his home.
There were many limitations. Not every object makes a good medium; if the medium's spirit was too weak, perception became unclear. If it was too strong, the Spiritbender could not intervene.
Still, this ability was practical. Kahn no longer needed to leave his body to locate people—a process both restrictive and dangerous.
Exposing his spirit could invite danger, particularly from malevolent spirits.
Firebending, after all, is driven by chi, which is a combination of body and spirit. In his spirit state, Kahn could not generate chi, rendering Earthbending impossible.
If he encountered an evil spirit in this state, the outcome would be predictable.
Observing Kahn's progress, Guru Pathik nodded in approval.
"Your temperament is indeed suited for learning Spiritbending," he said.
Spiritbending, as the name suggests, is the art of controlling spirits.
Mastery involves not only manipulating external spirits but also cultivating one's own mind.
For Guru Pathik, talent was secondary; the true skill lay in self-discovery, enlightenment, and understanding. In this, Kahn had immense potential.
Guru Pathik mentioned an underachiever he had taught long ago: Iroh. Suppressing himself too much and burdened by his thoughts, Iroh struggled with Spiritbending.
Kahn strongly agreed. Though Iroh appeared cheerful, years of interaction revealed a man weighed down by his own complexity.
Kahn also learned that Guru Pathik had waited for the Avatar's return for many years, aiming to assist him with cultivation.
Curious, Kahn asked, "Guru, you can see all things in the world, yet after so many years, you still haven't found the Avatar?"
Guru Pathik smiled. "If the Avatar does not wish to appear, no one can find him—not even I. I merely wait, to offer help when he returns."
"What if he never returns?"
"Then I will keep waiting. Even if my body perishes, I will continue in the Spirit World until he appears."
For a Spiritbender, physical death does not mean the end. By leaving their body, they can achieve immortality in spirit form, much like a true spirit.
Kahn found this puzzling; immortality was humanity's ultimate dream.
Guru Pathik explained, however, that while natural for spirits, immortality holds little wonder for humans.
When Kahn asked why he helped the Avatar, Guru Pathik answered, "Originally, it was a request from an Air Nomad friend. Now, it is also my own will."
This implied Guru Pathik's Spiritbending was powerful enough to teach the Avatar a hundred years ago—a revelation that deeply shocked Kahn.
In another world, this was comparable to Zhang Sanfeng.
(Zhang Sanfeng (张三丰) is a legendary Chinese figure—half historical, half mythological—famous across Chinese martial arts and wuxia stories)
Returning to the present, Heavenly Eye Vision was merely an application of Spiritbending, not the cultivation method itself. True cultivation required understanding Chakra.
"Chakra?" Kahn's memories stirred.
Guru Pathik asked, "Do you know anything about this energy?"
"Ah, uh, no. Just a little familiarity," Kahn replied awkwardly, then focused on listening.
Guru Pathik explained that Chakra is the union of physical and spiritual energy—essentially another name for chi.
Chakra governs both body and mind, influencing organ function, emotions, and consciousness, while being influenced by them in return.
There are seven Chakra points in the human body, each tied to a specific function and emotion, often becoming blocked by negative feelings:
Earth Chakra (perineum): survival; blocked by fear.
Water Chakra (sacrum): joy; blocked by guilt.
Fire Chakra (abdomen): energy; blocked by shame.
Air Chakra (chest): love; blocked by grief.
Sound Chakra (throat): truth; blocked by lies.
Light Chakra (third eye): insight; blocked by illusion.
Meditation Chakra (crown of the head): pure cosmic energy; blocked by worldly attachment.
"These seven Chakras represent seven spiritual obstacles. Ordinary people are often troubled by them. As Spiritbenders, we cultivate by clearing these obstacles to achieve a clear mind and spirit."
Kahn exhaled deeply. "Seven Chakra points, seven obstacles…"
Although he hadn't begun cultivation yet, he could sense the difficulty ahead.
"Then how should I cultivate?" he asked.
Guru Pathik smiled. "It's simple, yet not simple. Face them, understand them, and overcome them."
