Time rewound to shortly after Ursa recovered her memories—when Kahn was still in the room.
Ursa and Azula were huddled together in a quiet corner, whispering secrets only girls would share.
"Speaking of which, there's something I've been curious about," Ursa said with a teasing smile.
She leaned close and whispered, "Azula, my dear daughter… are you and Kahn dating?"
"Of course not!" Azula practically jumped.
Her usual cold composure shattered instantly, revealing genuine panic and the kind of flustered shyness that only showed her true age.
Ursa's smile deepened, clearly enjoying her reaction. "I just thought you two looked good together. What, do you not like him?"
"It's not that I don't like him—uh—what I mean is, in terms of ability or… other things, he's actually quite good, so…"
"Heh heh… I understand, I understand."
Seeing Azula's rare awkwardness, Ursa couldn't help recalling her own simple, joyful youth with Noren in their small town.
"So," Ursa continued, "have you confessed? Or are you waiting for him to speak first?"
The question hit Azula right in the heart. She went still.
"Honestly… I'm not sure what he's thinking."
"You can be more confident, my daughter."
Ursa hugged her gently and looked toward Kahn. "You two have survived so many dangers together. Who in the world trusts each other more than you two?"
"I believe he likes you as well, but hasn't recognized his feelings yet. That means you need to take the first step."
"Besides—will confessing be harder than everything you're already doing?"
Azula's eyes gradually brightened. Her nervousness dimmed, replaced by her usual pride and strength.
"You're right. I know what to do."
She paused, then lowered her voice.
"Mother… there's something I'd like to ask of you…"
—
Time flowed quietly as the day of action grew closer.
Everything was ready except the final strike.
For Kahn, the only task left was to wait—but waiting was sometimes the hardest part.
A strange, persistent unease gnawed at him, as if something unforeseen was about to happen.
And indeed—it was.
On the final night before the operation, Mai—who should've been assisting Azula in the city—unexpectedly rushed in, completely out of character.
Kahn jolted awake from his dream. The unease in his chest exploded as Mai delivered the news:
"Azula acted on her own—she moved ahead of schedule!"
—
The palace had clearly erupted earlier, but by the time Kahn arrived, things had gone eerily quiet.
Bright lamps lit every corridor, patrol teams rushed through the halls, and dried blood stained the stone floors.
Kahn slipped past the guards and reached the main hall.
The doors stood open. Inside, several officials in messy nightclothes huddled together nervously. Wolf, the captain of the guard, was also present.
But the throne had changed hands—Ozai was gone.
Azula sat upon the Fire Nation throne.
When she saw Kahn enter, Azula waved casually. Wolf immediately dismissed the others.
Once the hall was empty, Azula dropped her dignified posture and lounged lazily across the throne, smirking.
"You got here pretty fast."
From the initial shock, to the worry on his way here, to the sight before him—Kahn's emotions tangled so tightly he didn't know where to begin.
After several seconds, he finally forced out:
"What happened? Where's Ozai?"
"As you can see—Ozai is history."
Azula hopped off the throne and walked over, looking pleased with herself.
"As for his body? No idea. I had someone drag him away."
"You killed him?"
"Mhm." She winked playfully. "Turns out we overestimated him. Ozai was way easier to deal with than we imagined."
"Can you believe it? He shot one Lightningbending attack, I returned one Reverse Lightning Fire—and that was it. Hahaha—HAHAHAHA…"
"He was so weak. Shockingly weak."
"What's wrong? Not happy?"
"I…" Kahn was speechless.
Ozai… died like that?
After years of oppression, countless careful maneuvers, and assembling a terrifying strike force of White Lotus masters—Ozai simply died in two moves?
The simplicity of it made everything he had done feel absurd.
But he steadied himself and asked coldly, "Why did you act early? Why hide it from us? What were you thinking?"
His tone was sharp—only softened because she'd succeeded. If she hadn't, this would've been a catastrophe for all of them.
Azula's actions were a gamble that risked everyone's lives.
Azula smirked. "I wasn't hiding it from you—from us. I was hiding it from them."
"'Them'?"
"The White Lotus," she said flatly. "Do you really believe they came purely to help? That Bumi, Pakku, Jeong Jeong have no personal interests? That the White Lotus has no agenda?"
Azula sneered. "If they helped defeat Ozai, they'd demand something afterward. And could we refuse?"
"And if such a large group entered the capital, would we still have control?"
Kahn fell silent. He couldn't refute her.
But realizing he now stood between Azula and the White Lotus made him suddenly exhausted—spiritually drained.
"…Then why agree to the alliance at all?"
"Because an extra safety net never hurts. And if my plan failed, their presence gives us more escape options."
Azula kept talking, unaware of the pain forming in Kahn's eyes.
"Also, I wanted to see the White Lotus's true strength. They surprised me. They'll be more difficult to handle than Ozai—or even the Earth Kingdom."
"And now, the most important problem is succession. I've seized the palace, but if Iroh brings the White Lotus to back Zuko, it'll be troublesome."
"But in the end, Kahn—we will win."
She stepped closer. "You'll help me, right?"
That confident gaze—the gaze that always pulled him along.
In the past, he would sigh at fate and follow her once again.
But this time… he wanted to leave.
"I…" He struggled to speak.
But Azula suddenly remembered something. Her face flushed scarlet. She turned away, breathing slowly to compose herself.
Then she turned back to him—serious, courageous, and unmistakably nervous.
"And one more thing. The most important thing to me."
"Kahn… would you be willing to govern the Fire Nation with me?"
Kahn frowned. "What do you mean?"
"What I mean is—"
Before he could finish, Azula's face suddenly filled his entire vision.
His eyes widened.
"You're going to do—mm—?!"
