Zuko—currently using the alias Li—placed the tea in front of him with polite, practiced movements.
Kahn kept a calm expression and nodded in thanks.
He took a sip. The taste was unmistakably familiar, warm in a way only Iroh's brewing ever was.
Sitting here, watching Iroh and Zuko work in aprons, Kahn still couldn't wrap his head around how the two of them ended up like this.
If Ozai knew the Fire Nation's Crown Prince and the Dragon of the West were serving tea in the Earth Kingdom capital… he'd probably rage hard enough to launch a midnight attack on the city just to drag them back—or chop them into a thousand pieces.
Kahn smirked at the mental image.
His eyes drifted to the scar across Zuko's left eye. So this world's Zuko had suffered the same fate: banished, humiliated, and cast out.
And Iroh… the Iroh of this world looked more worn down through the eyes, probably from worrying endlessly about Zuko.
His posture was still gentle, his smile still warm, but there was a heaviness in him.
Was Zuko still hunting the Avatar under Ozai's orders?
Judging by Zuko's current calm demeanor—and Iroh's clear enjoyment of this tea shop life—it didn't look like it. If anything, they seemed… comfortable.
Kahn didn't pry into answers. Instead, for the first time in a long while, he allowed himself to simply sit, sip tea, and relax.
Despite being so far from his own world, this moment felt strangely like being home.
He sat like that through the entire morning. When lunchtime approached and the tea house gradually emptied, Zuko leaned close to Iroh and whispered:
"Uncle, I think we have a problem again. Two customers have been staring at us. That girl at the corner table… and the man at the second table on the left—he's been watching us all morning."
"I think our identities might've been exposed."
Zuko wasn't overthinking it. The last time someone recognized him, the idiot had actually challenged him to a duel. The Dai Li dragged that man out before he got himself killed.
But now there were two suspicious people at once. A headache indeed.
Iroh stroked his beard, chuckling.
"That girl has been here a while, yes… but I think she simply seems interested in you."
"What?!" Zuko snapped. Right at that moment, the girl walked up nervously, paid her bill, and asked shyly:
"Thank you for the tea. Um… may I know your name?"
Zuko stiffened. Then he forced himself to answer calmly:
"My name is Li. My uncle and I are new here, so… you wouldn't have seen me before."
"Oh—hello, Li. My name is Jin. Actually… I wanted to ask—"
Seeing his nephew stumble through awkward small talk, Iroh smiled warmly and decided not to interrupt them.
Instead, he walked toward Kahn's table.
Kahn had been enjoying the scene with great amusement.
Zuko getting flustered over a girl—yeah, he would've paid good money to snap a picture. Mai from either world would've had a field day with it.
But before he could enjoy it further, a broad figure blocked his view.
Iroh stood before him with a gentle chuckle.
"This guest, how do you like the tea?"
Kahn returned the smile.
"I was never a tea person myself. But an elder close to me loved tea, so over time I picked up the habit from him."
"Once it becomes familiar, you start appreciating it," Iroh said warmly. "I'm glad another young person can appreciate tea's beauty. If only my nephew could be the same."
He laughed, chatting casually, offering no hint of suspicion.
He continued thoughtfully:
"You know… for some reason, I feel like I've met you before. There's a sense of familiarity about you."
He wasn't lying—something about the boy tugged at an old memory.
But Kahn's next sentence made him freeze.
"Are you referring to my father—Tate?"
Kahn hadn't brought up his convenient original-world father in a long time, but he hadn't forgotten him.
His entire relationship with Iroh in his own world had started with the bond between Tate and Iroh during the war.
Tate?
My old subordinate? My friend?
Hearing that name after so long struck Iroh like lightning. Memories of the siege of Ba Sing Se flooded back—memories of his son, of his soldiers, of Tate.
Before the walls fell, Tate entrusted his wife and child to Iroh.
But when Iroh finally emerged from mourning his son and went to fulfill that promise, he learned the terrible news:
Tate's wife—overwhelmed by grief—took her own life.
And the baby.
Iroh stared at Kahn… and suddenly the familiarity snapped into place.
Tate's face overlapped with the young man's. The eyes. The brow. The quiet strength.
Yes.
There was a resemblance.
But this young man… he was more handsome than Tate had ever been.
Iroh swallowed.
"…I remember Tate had a child. But…"
The unspoken part hung heavy: But that child died.
Kahn suddenly understood how the "original" Kahn of this world died.
And why this world's timeline had diverged so sharply from his own.
He said quietly.
"I'm that child who should've died. But in another world… I lived. And you adopted me."
He met Iroh's eyes and continued gently:
"It's a long story. And this isn't the right place for it. Uncle Iroh—if you can trust me—let's go somewhere else to talk."
The title Uncle Iroh struck him deeply. Hearing it felt strangely natural—comforting, even.
Something in his heart whispered that this boy could be trusted.
Iroh stroked his beard, smiling faintly.
"Haha… this may turn out to be quite an unimaginable experience."
The best uncle in any world—ready to listen.
