Chapter 266 – Fragments of UncertaintyI. Echoes in the Twilight

Dawn did not come. Edenfall remained shrouded in a gray, broken sky, as if time had stopped. The inhabitants walked with faces distorted by confusion: some heard voices that were not there, others forgot the names of their loved ones.

Akihiko stopped at the top of a metal walkway. The wind carried dust and ash that clung to his black jacket.

"The void doesn't just corrode walls," he murmured. "It's rewriting who we are."

Beside her, Kaede kept her gaze steady. Her dark kimono fluttered, but her expression was unwavering.

"We knew it from the moment we agreed to cross this border. What's at stake isn't just the city... but our very memories."

II. The divided council

In the makeshift shelter, the group gathered: Lirea, Juno, Sael, and Orsa. On the table, Orsa had spread out scrolls and shimmering symbols, drawn with an ink that seemed to vibrate.

"With each passing day, more people lose parts of themselves," Orsa explained. "Emptiness doesn't destroy… it transforms. Sooner or later, everyone here will change into something we can't recognize."

Sael slammed his fist on the table.

" Then we must confront it at its root! We cannot allow this 'transformation' to rob us of who we are."

But Lirea interrupted him:

" What if that root cannot be destroyed? What if the only way to survive is to understand it?"

The tension became palpable. The room was filled with held breaths, as if each word weighed more than a sword.

III. Traces of the tree

Akihiko broke the silence.

"There are no answers here… but there are clues." He pulled a black fragment from his jacket. It was a piece of root, hard as metal, torn from the remains of the Tree of Edenfall. "These roots don't die," he continued. "They spread even beyond the ground. Perhaps the tree is more alive than we think."

Juno stepped forward.

"So the question is: is the tree resisting the void... or is it feeding it?"

Kaede closed her eyes for a few seconds, as if she heard something beyond words.

"The tree still holds secrets. And until we understand them, we'll be fighting blindly."

IV. The Path of Shadows

They decided to split up: Akihiko, Kaede, and Lirea would head for the deepest remains of the Tree, a place forbidden even to the oldest inhabitants of Edenfall. Sael and Juno would stay behind to keep the refuge safe.

Before leaving, Lirea approached Akihiko.

"If we cross too far, we might not return the same. Are you willing to risk who you are?"

Akihiko looked at the katana in his hand. The blade reflected no light, only shadows.

"What I am has never been complete. If I must lose myself a little more to understand... then I will."

V. The Living Border

The trio advanced to the edge of Edenfall. There, where the tree roots mingled with human structures, the world seemed to breathe. Buildings curved like ribs, shadows pulsed like veins.

Suddenly, Lirea put her hands to her head.

"It's not a dead place... it's a body. The emptiness is shaping it."

Kaede slowly unsheathed a dagger hidden in her kimono, observing the living walls that surrounded them.

"So we're walking into an enemy we don't yet understand."

Akihiko took a firm step forward, the distortion of the void surrounding him like an echo.

"And the more we ignore it, the more it will consume us."
