"Return, Metagross!" Chen Xiaoxiao called as her loyal Pokémon disappeared in a beam of red light. At the same time, she telepathically summoned Latias from her pocket dimension for healing channeling the kind of focus Goku used when calling for his Spirit energy.
"Haha! This is my strongest Pokémon," Master Lin boasted proudly. "If you don't bring out your best now, you'll be in real trouble."
The friendly verbal jousting stretched on for over a minute, reminiscent of the classic standoffs between Goku and Vegeta before their most intense clashes.
Master Lin's Kartana stood on the brink of champion-tier strength. His other Pokémon wouldn't hold a candle to it, but Kartana was like Gohan unleashing his full potential during the Cell Games.

A shimmering green barrier enveloped Kartana just in time.

The psychic blast collided violently with the shield, shattering across it like a failed Destructo Disc against Cell's armor.
"Again! Psychic!"
Latias summoned another wave of raw mental force faster than before and unleashed it.
"Kartana—!"

The second blast struck Kartana dead-on. The Ultra Beast didn't even have time to cry out before crashing to the ground like a Z-Fighter out of ki.
"Kartana is unable to battle! Latias wins!"
The referee blinked at how fast it ended.

The entire crowd fell silent for a moment then erupted like Vegeta breaking free of Babidi's control.
Just ten seconds and Kartana was down.
"Return, Kartana! Xiaoxiao, your Latias is incredible!"
Master Lin returned his Ultra Beast with a rueful smile and handed the Poké Ball to the gym assistant.
"Your Kartana was incredible too," Chen Xiaoxiao replied. "But after such an intense battle with Metagross, it was already worn down."
Their words sounded respectful, but the exchange mirrored Vegeta and Goku's famous battle banter respect veiled behind challenge.
"Gym Leader, please send out your next Pokémon."
"Go Venusaur!"

Latias charged through the cloud, unleashing a slicing strike right across Venusaur's body.

Mega Venusaur let out a roar, but Latias had paid a price her body glowed purple. She'd been badly poisoned.
"Why would Chen Xiaoxiao charge in like that?" Master Lin thought. "Doesn't she know Toxic will eat away her stamina?"
Then he saw her expression and realized.
"Latias, Psycho Shift! Now!"
A ripple of psychic energy surged from Latias.
Master Lin's eyes widened. "She knows Psycho Shift?!"
"Venusaur, use Leaf Blade interrupt it!"
Razor-sharp leaves surged like Krillin's Solar Flare, but it was too late.
Latias's psychic pulse transferred the poison away onto Venusaur!
