Money was bloodline. Bloodline was law. And law was for sale in Starfall.
The Bloodline Market sat outside the Academy walls. A city of tents, stalls, and quiet auctions. Here, noble houses sold failed heirs. Mercenaries sold stolen traits. Forgers sold lies in pretty bottles.
If you were born with nothing, you came here to buy a chance.
Kael walked into it three days after the Edict of Measurement failed.
*Lyra:* "You shouldn't be here. This place is watched."
*Kael:* "Then they'll see."
*The Auction of Echoes*
The center tent was called The Echo. No bloodlines were sold whole. Only echoes. Fragments. Traits ripped from corpses and sealed in glass.
*Auctioneer:* "Lot one. Wolf Nose. Stronger smell. Side effect: animal hunger."
*Auctioneer:* "Lot two. Iron Skin. Side effect: slower blood."
*Auctioneer:* "Lot three. Thunder Memory. One use. Side effect: migraine."
The crowd bid with coin and favors.
Kael did not bid.
_Target: Concept, Auction. Source: The Echo. Edit: Lies Visible._
_Success. Trait acquired: Truthsight._
Suddenly the glass bottles looked different. The Wolf Nose was not wolf. It was dog, diluted. The Iron Skin was rusted metal dust. The Thunder Memory was a scream recorded in a jar.
*Kael:* _internal_ "They sell fear, not power."
*Lyra:* "You see it too."
*Kael:* "Yes."
*The Merchant King*
A man in a red coat watched them. Bald. Smiling. Too many rings.
*Merchant King:* "You're the F-Rank who broke a Saint's Law."
*Kael:* "And you're the man who sells broken things."
*Merchant King:* "I sell potential. You buy potential."
He opened a case. Inside, a black vial.
*Merchant King:* "Dragon Bloodline. One percent pure. No side effects. Guaranteed."
*Kael:* _internal_ "Copy the concept of the vial."
_Target: Concept, Dragon Bloodline. Source: Vial. Edit: Analysis._
_Result: It's pig blood with fire powder._
*Kael:* "It's fraud."
The Merchant King's smile did not change.
*Merchant King:* "All bloodlines are fraud until someone believes."
*Kael:* "Then I believe in something better."
_Target: Trait, Merchant Sense. Source: Merchant King. Edit: Human-Compatible. One tenth of one percent better._
_Success._
Kael could now see lies in prices, greed in smiles, and desperation in hands.
*Kael:* "You're afraid of me."
*Merchant King:* "I'm afraid of a world where I can't sell fear."
He closed his case and left.
*The First Student Saved*
In the back alley, a girl of twelve was being held by two men. Her wrist was branded F.
*Man 1:* "You'll fetch more in the mines. F-Rank body, no resistance."
*Kael:* "Let her go."
*Man 2:* "Or what? You'll copy us?"
_Target: Concept, Fear. Source: Kael. Edit: Amplified one tenth of one percent._
The men dropped their knives.
*Kael:* "Run."
The girl ran. She stopped at the corner.
*Girl:* "Why help me?"
*Kael:* "Because someone should have helped me."
*Lyra:* "You can't save them all."
*Kael:* "I can teach them to save themselves."
He knelt.
*Kael:* "What's your name?"
*Girl:* "Nina."
*Kael:* "Nina, you are not F-Rank. You are Unwritten."
_Target: Trait, Keen Hearing. Source: Bat Concept. Edit: Human-Compatible._
_Success._
Nina's eyes widened. She could hear the market breathing.
*Kael:* "Use it. Don't become them."
*The Market's Law*
The Market had a rule. No fighting. Bloodline fights were held in the Pit, not the stalls.
A man broke the rule.
*Pit Lord:* "You're disrupting trade, boy."
He was C-Rank. Earthshaker Bloodline. The ground cracked under his feet.
*Kael:* "You break your own law."
*Pit Lord:* "Laws are for buyers."
He slammed his fist down.
_Target: Concept, Law. Source: Market Rule. Edit: Law Applies to All._
_Success._
The ground under the Pit Lord's feet also cracked. He fell.
*Kael:* "Laws are for everyone. That's why they work."
The crowd did not cheer. They stepped back.
Because a boy had just made a market obey.
*Lyra's Past*
That night, in a quiet tent, Lyra told him why she came.
*Lyra:* "My family sold me. Seal Saint Bloodline is rare. They wanted coin."
*Kael:* "And the Academy bought you."
*Lyra:* "Yes. I was property before I was a student."
*Kael:* "You're not property now."
*Lyra:* "Because you see me."
She showed him her wrist. The cracks were gone, but the memory stayed.
*Kael:* "I can't erase what they did. But I can copy a future where it doesn't define you."
_Target: Concept, Freedom. Source: Imagination. Edit: One tenth of one percent more._
_Success._
Lyra felt lighter. Not free. But less chained.
*Lyra:* "Thank you."
*Kael:* "Don't thank me. Become someone they can't buy."
The Book wrote a line.
_Rule Sixteen: A market that sells people will one day be sold itself._
*The Academy's Spy*
They were not alone.
*Spy:* "Kael Veyrin. You are under observation."
He stepped from shadow. Academy crest. C-Rank. Mind Reader Bloodline.
*Kael:* "Then read this."
_Target: Concept, Thought. Source: Spy. Edit: Thought Overflows._
The spy clutched his head. He saw every lie he had ever told. Every secret he had sold.
*Spy:* "Stop. Stop."
*Kael:* "You wanted my mind. Here it is. Twelve thousand scrolls. Can you carry it?"
The spy ran.
*Lyra:* "They'll come harder now."
*Kael:* "Let them. I'm building an army of F-Ranks who know the truth."
*The Market Burns*
The Merchant King returned that night with guards. Twenty men. All armed with fake bloodlines.
*Merchant King:* "You're bad for business."
*Kael:* "You're bad for people."
_Target: Concept, Commerce. Source: Market. Edit: Commerce Requires Consent._
_Success._
Half the guards dropped their weapons. They did not know why. They just could not sell anymore.
*Merchant King:* "You can't change a city with a thought."
*Kael:* "Watch me."
_Target: Concept, Value. Source: Bloodline Market. Edit: Value Equals Life, Not Coin._
_Success._
The tents did not burn. They emptied. People walked out. They stopped bidding.
The Merchant King stared at his empty stalls.
*Merchant King:* "What are you?"
*Kael:* "Unwritten."
He turned and walked out with Lyra and Nina.
Behind them, the Bloodline Market did not fall. It changed.
*The Book's New Rule*
On the road back to the Academy, the Book opened.
_Rule Seventeen: To copy a system, you must first understand what it sells. If it sells fear, copy courage. If it sells lies, copy truth._
*Kael:* _internal_ "One market down. One Academy to go."
*Lyra:* "Where next?"
*Kael:* "The Dungeon. I need monsters. Monsters have honest traits."
*Nina:* "I'm coming too."
*Kael:* "Then we go together."
The Book added one more line.
_Rule Eighteen: The Right Way of Using Copy is to make sure no one else is called F-Rank again.
