Chapter 242 - What Did You Do To Chloe?

The staff was already pointed at him.

Adam moved.

He didn't finish the thought. He saw the angle of Chloe's shoulders, the staff aligned slightly across her body, and his weight shifted left before his mind had finished forming

Fuck she's going to....

The lightning struck the ground where he'd been standing, exploding across the scorched earth in a white-blue fork that punched through the fog and left a blackened groove smoking beneath him.

7The crack reached his ears a fraction later, sharp enough to make his teeth vibrate, and something metallic flooded his mouth. Not blood. Electricity. His saliva had gone thin and bitter from the charge that had passed close enough to him to make every hair along his arms rise.

Too fast. Move first.

He ran.

Not away. Running bought seconds, and seconds bought healing, distance, information. His feet tore across the broken ground while fog curled around his knees, then his waist, then his chest, and every time he changed direction the fog changed with him. It didn't drift. It followed. Adam could feel the difference between weather and attention now. This fog knew where he was.

He accelerated anyway.

A section of fog ahead of him folded inward.

Adam's stride shortened instinctively, but the white-grey mass was already becoming a person. It looked like the fog had been pulled together by invisible hands, condensed into shoulders, arms, a face, until Chloe stood directly in his path. She raised her staff. A crystal-clear shield snapped into existence between them.

Adam hit it at full speed.

The barrier didn't bend.

His chest slammed into the curved surface, his feet left the ground, and the breath was crushed out of him as his body folded around an immovable wall. He bounced backward, struck the ground shoulder-first, rolled twice, and came up on one knee just as Chloe vanished.

Something struck his side.

The Lumen beam wasn't lightning. It had weight.

A concentrated stream of pale energy drove into his ribs and threw him sideways with enough force to make the ground disappear beneath him. His shoulder struck a tree, his body continued through the trunk, and wood detonated around him in a spray of bark and splinters. The trunk split with a wet, fibrous crack as his momentum carried him through it.

Adam hit the ground hard enough to lose the direction of up.

Chloe's voice reached him through the fog.

"The fog is my domain. You're practically on the palm of my hand."

Another blast came.

He rolled left.

The beam caught his right side.

His shoulder disappeared first.

For one impossible instant, Adam's brain registered the shape of his arm still existing while the rest of his body was already registering that it wasn't. Then the heat arrived. It raced from the ruined shoulder down across his ribs, deep enough that the nerves stopped reporting individual points of pain and began sending one continuous, blinding alarm through the entire right side of his body.

Chloe vanished again.

Adam lay against the dirt with his left hand pressed into the ground and stared at the place where his right arm should have been. He yelled in pain.

My arm.

His torso was burned from shoulder to ribcage. His lungs were still working, but every breath pulled the damaged tissue tight enough to make his vision flicker. Lumen crawled through the wound, rebuilding what it could, but the reconstruction couldn't keep pace.

He could feel tissue closing, failing, rebuilding, failing again. His strength meant nothing against an opponent he couldn't reliably touch. His healing meant nothing if she could keep destroying him faster than his body could repair itself.

Need magic.

The thought arrived cleanly.

Then something registered behind him.

His ears caught nothing.

His skin did.

Adam twisted.

Chloe spawned at his blind spot.

He threw himself sideways while forcing Lumen into the ruined shoulder.

The reconstruction started violently.

Bone extended first, white beneath rapidly forming tissue. Muscle wrapped around it in thick bands. Nerves threaded through the new structure in flickering lines of sensation so sharp his teeth clenched, and skin sealed over everything before the arm had completely finished forming. Steam rose from the rebuilt flesh.

Adam didn't wait.

Both palms came forward.

The shield erupted between them.

Lightning hit.

The world became white.

The impact spread through the crystal-like barrier in branching fractures, each crack racing away from the point of contact like a pane of glass being broken from the inside.

Adam's palms burned. His wrists buckled. The force didn't disappear into the shield. It traveled through it, through his arms, into his shoulders, down his spine and through his legs until his boots carved trenches into the earth.

The barrier cracked farther.

Adam fed it Lumen.

The fractures closed.

Another impact struck.

More cracks.

More Lumen.

He was blown backward anyway, sliding several meters before his heels caught against the ground. His body wanted to fold. He kept his hands raised.

The shield held.

Adam landed hard on his back.

The shield remained standing.

One millimeter slower. One half second of delay. I was a dead man.

He forced himself upright.

His right arm hung beside him.

Intact.

Steam rose from the skin where he'd rebuilt it.

Adam stared at his fingers for half a second.

Useful.

That was all he allowed himself.

Chloe spawned again.

Adam raised the shield.

This time he changed its shape.

The forward-facing semicircle expanded outward, its edges curving around his body until the barrier became an incomplete dome. He wasn't copying a technique he'd been taught. He was copying a principle he'd seen. Aiva's barriers didn't just exist in front of her. They enclosed space.

Shape follows purpose.

Lightning hit from the left.

The shield caught it.

A second strike came from the right.

Another crack raced across the surface.

Then a third Chloe appeared.

Adam's eyes snapped between them.

One.

Two.

Three.

Different angles.

Different timing.

The first fired.

The second fired before the first impact finished traveling through the barrier.

The third fired from behind him.

Adam rotated the shield around his body.

Impact.

Repair.

Impact.

Repair.

His muscles weren't the problem anymore. His reserves were.

Every repair pulled Lumen out of him. Every new section of barrier demanded more. His body could feel the depletion as an emptiness behind his ribs, a reservoir dropping toward a bottom he couldn't see.

She's waiting. She knows i can't hold the shield forever. She's waiting for the hold to slip just enough that one hit gets through clean.

He knew it.

He couldn't stop it.

Need another option.

Aiva had been supposed to teach them technique combination tonight.

Adam almost laughed.

He was going to be late to the lesson and die before anyone could mark him absent.

Lightning slammed into the barrier again.

The thought came apart and reassembled.

The shield was already running.

He was already feeding Lumen into it.

He couldn't drop it to cast fire. That half-second transition was exactly what Chloe had been waiting for.

But what if he didn't drop it?

What if the shield became the spell?

The thought was ugly and incomplete, but it had somewhere to go.

I can use it like a canvas.

The crystal surface wasn't the point.

The Lumen was.

The shape was only what the Lumen was being told to become.

Yeah, a canvas. Think of it as a canvas.

Another impact.

His arms shook.

If this doesn't work I'm dead.

Adam drew a breath through his teeth.

The shield fractured again.

He held it.

Then he changed what the Lumen was being told to do.

"Ignis Manus."

He said it quietly.

Precisely.

The Lumen moved.

The crystal surface changed at the edges first.

Transparency became amber.

Heat rolled across Adam's face.

The barrier's crystalline structure softened into light.

For half a second, the shield stopped being a shield.

Adam was exposed.

Nothing stood between him and Chloe.

Nothing stood between Chloe and him.

He pushed both hands outward.

The Lumen obeyed.

Fire exploded from the center of the former barrier.

It didn't shoot forward.

It expanded.

A ring of flame tore across the wasteland in every direction, racing over the ground and climbing into the air at the same time.

Fog vanished wherever the fire touched it, burned into steam so quickly that the entire clearing flashed white before the heat swallowed it. The three Chloes disappeared inside the expanding wall of fire, their silhouettes breaking apart as the mirages lost the Lumen sustaining them.

For one second, the wasteland looked like daylight.

Then the fire collapsed.

Silence followed.

Adam stood in the center of the clearing with both hands lowered, chest heaving.

The fog was gone.

The electrical charge was gone.

There was no movement.

No Lumen signatures.

Nothing.

He took one full breath.

His chest expanded completely.

For the first time since the fight began, his body didn't immediately tell him that something was trying to kill him.

Then a hand touched his back.
