Chapter 243 - The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Adam's arm started to move.

His fingers began curling toward the wrist behind him.

The grip never formed.

Electricity entered through the contact point.

His entire nervous system seized around the intrusion.

His arm stopped halfway.

Not because it couldn't move.

Because something else had moved it first.

The distinction hit him immediately. Paralysis would have been nothing. This was worse. He could feel the command traveling through the nerves, could feel his own muscles preparing to obey an instruction he hadn't given them.

A second hand settled against his shoulder.

Chloe's voice came beside his ear.

"After a large spell, your Lumen disperses. Detection becomes ineffective. Your strongest attack leaves you most vulnerable to surprise. Every mage knows this."

Her fingers tightened.

"This is Tase. A sub-application of electricity. It requires no staff. Direct contact allows me to enter the nervous system and override voluntary control."

Adam's knees bent.

He fought to keep them straight.

They bent farther.

"Lie down."

His body obeyed.

His knees hit first.

Then his hands.

Then his chest touched the scorched ground.

Adam stared at his own fingers.

No.

He tried to move them.

Nothing.

He tried to lift his head.

His neck moved halfway, then stopped.

His throat tightened when he tried to speak.

No sound came out.

He could feel his vocal cords attempting to respond, could feel the command forming in the muscles around his lungs and throat, and then another signal cut across his own before it reached them.

Chloe remained behind him.

"I can stop your diaphragm too you know."

Adam's eyes widened.

The next breath came shallow.

His lungs expanded.

His abdomen barely moved.

No.

The thought came with a sudden, animal fear.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of dying.

He didn't want to die.

Not here.

Not like this.

His vision began narrowing at the edges.

Move.

Nothing.

Fucking do something.

His own Lumen answered.

Adam forced it inward.

He didn't target Chloe.

He didn't target Tase.

He targeted himself.

Lumen flooded his nervous system.

The sensation was immediate and horrible. His nerves felt too hot beneath his skin, every signal amplified until his muscles trembled against the commands already occupying them.

Two electrical systems fought over the same pathways, one telling his arm to remain still while the other screamed for movement.

His hand twitched.

Then moved.

Wrong.

Too slow.

His elbow dragged across the ground.

Adam forced more Lumen through the pathways.

His shoulder rose.

His arm swung.

His fingers passed through Chloe's body.

There was no resistance.

The figure broke apart.

Fog scattered where the mirage had been, dissolving into nothing as the Lumen constructing it ceased to exist.

Four feet behind him stood the real Chloe.

Her staff was raised.

She laughed.

The sound was wrong.

Not Chloe's laugh. Not even a cruel version of it. It was a short, empty sound made by something that had expected him to do exactly what he'd done.

"You believed I would actually compromise my position just like that."

The staff came down.

Lightning struck.

Adam didn't have enough left to withstand it.

The current tore through him.

His muscles locked. His spine arched. His jaw clamped so hard his teeth cut into his tongue. His depleted Lumen reserves couldn't reinforce the damage fast enough, and his healing stuttered under the electrical assault.

His body hit the ground.

Something inside him stopped trying to survive as Adam would.

Enough.

There was no anger in it.

No panic.

No calculation about what Chloe had done or where Aiva was or why any of this was happening.

Those questions belonged to Adam.

Something underneath him had simpler priorities.

Threat.

The word carried no emotion.

End.

Lumen erupted around his body.

The light came first.

It pushed outward through his skin in a violent white-blue surge, illuminating the scorched ground beneath him. His spine lengthened. His shoulders widened. His fingers curled as the bones of his hands thickened and reshaped. His legs restructured beneath him, joints shifting with slow, brutal inevitability.

Steam poured from his skin.

The transformation kept building.

Muscle expanded over a frame that refused to remain human. His jaw pushed forward. His teeth lengthened. Fur erupted across his body in dense black layers, swallowing the light until he stood eight feet tall inside a halo of his own Lumen.

The final changes settled through his hands and feet.

His head lifted.

Blue eyes opened.

They glowed coldly through the steam.

The wolf stood.

He began to cast healing and amplified it putting a certain continuous focus into it which in turn reinforced his body. The lumen hardening tissue beneath the fur, reinforcing muscle fibers, tightening connective tissue, strengthening bone.

He amplified his nervous system next, to counteract the tase effect in his body, electrical signals accelerating through reinforced pathways which suddenly met she couldn't control him anymore.

No waiting.

No recovery.

The wolf pounced.

Chloe vanished sideways.

His claws hit the ground where she'd been.

The earth fractured beneath him.

Cracks raced outward from the impact point as his weight drove into the scorched soil, but he was already turning before the fragments finished falling.

Two fireballs formed between his hands.

He threw them.

The first came high.

Chloe dodged.

The second came low.

She raised a shield.

Both were distractions.

The wolf was already moving.

Chloe's shield caught the second fireball.

She looked upward.

He was there.

She tried to rise.

He had already calculated the angle.

Eight feet of black fur launched from the ground, legs compressing and extending with enough force to leave a crater beneath him. He reached the point where her body was still gaining altitude and closed one hand around her.

His fingers locked around her.

Then he drove her down.

The ground broke beneath her body.

The impact flattened a section of scorched earth and sent a ring of dust outward through the clearing. Chloe went still.

The wolf landed beside her.

His hand pressed against her chest.

Lumen flowed from him into her.

Bone realigned.

Tissue closed.

The damage reversed beneath his palm before the full extent of it had even registered in her body.

Chloe gasped.

Her eyes opened.

The wolf leaned closer.

"No one messes with my friends and lives."

His voice came from a throat built for growling, each word carrying a deep vibration beneath the recognizable language.

"What did you do to Chloe?"

She laughed.

The wolf's expression didn't change.

His hand moved to her neck.

He squeezed.

There was one clean snap.

Her body went limp.

Lumen rushed through his hand in an instant. Bones knit back together, tissue mended, and her lungs drew in air once more.

She let out a sharp gasp.

The wolf looked down at her.

"Another BS answer out of you and i swear to God i'mma light you on fire."

His grip remained around her as the last traces of steam drifted from his black fur, the cleared wasteland stretching around them beneath the dark clouds.
