Chapter 11 - chapter 10 :The Sovereign’s Gambit

Deep within the Inner Sanctum of the Imperial Capital—a city built of white jade and floating islands that sat miles above the smog of Sky City—the atmosphere was one of absolute, suffocating stillness. This was the heart of the Empire, where the air itself was so saturated with high-grade Qi that a commoner would suffocate simply by breathing it.

In the center of the Pavilion of Eternal Radiance, a man sat alone. He didn't wear a crown; he didn't need one. His presence alone bent the light in the room, creating a subtle distortion in space. This was the Martial Emperor, a man who had reached a realm of cultivation where his heartbeat synchronized with the pulse of the planet.

A soft chime echoed. A kneeling official, dressed in the gold-stitched robes of the Imperial Intelligence Bureau, appeared at the edge of the pavilion. He did not dare look up.

"Speak," the Emperor commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it resonated in the official's marrow.

"Your Majesty, the Resonance Pillar in Sky City's Outer District has shattered," the official whispered, his forehead pressed against the cool jade floor. "Two days ago, a Perfect-Grade emerged. But today... the third rank of the Heavenly List has flickered to life."

The Emperor's eyes, which had been closed in meditation, slowly opened. For a split second, the air in the pavilion turned into a vacuum. "The Five Elements? After four hundred years of silence from that seat?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. A boy named Kai Hart. A commoner."

The Emperor remained silent for a long moment. To the world, the Emperor was a protector of the common people. To the Great Clans, he was a rival. But to himself, he was a gardener. He knew that the Great Clans had grown too stagnant, their bloodlines thick with pride but thin on the raw, desperate hunger that produced true monsters.

"The Zhao Prince has already issued a challenge," the official added tentatively. "Zhao Long intends to 'test' the boy at the Academy."

A faint, dangerous smile touched the Emperor's lips. "Zhao Long is a blunt instrument. He is the Earthly Fiend; he knows only how to crush. But the Five Elements... that is a cycle of infinite change. If this boy survives the Prince, he will not just be a talent. He will be a variable."

The Emperor stood up, and as he did, the clouds beneath the floating pavilion parted, revealing the vast expanse of the Empire below.

"Do not interfere," the Emperor decreed. "The Clans will try to smother him with gold or bury him in the dirt. Let them. If he is truly the master of the Five Elements, he will turn their fire into his fuel and their earth into his foundation. Monitor him, but do not protect him. I want to see if this commoner can turn the 'Heavenly Ranking' into a list of his own achievements."

[Kai POV]

Back on the farm, the air felt thick with invisible eyes. Kai sat on the edge of his bed, his status panel glowing faintly in the dark. He had accepted the System's quest to defeat Zhao Long, and with it, he felt a new, heavy responsibility.

[Current Stats]

[Strength: 10]

[Agility: 10]

[Stamina: 10]

[Endurance: 10]

Kai stared at those numbers. They were the absolute limit of a "mortal" body—the ceiling that most people spent their entire lives trying to touch. But Zhao Long wasn't just a student; he was a Tier 1 Martial Artist.

In the ranking system of the Empire, the "Awakening" was merely the birth. Tier 1 was the first step into true transcendence. To reach Tier 1, a martial artist had to condense their raw Qi into a "Liquid Core," allowing them to reinforce their strikes with elemental properties. Zhao Long, with his Rank 10 Earthly Fiend foundation, likely had bones as dense as tectonic plates and a Liquid Core that hit with the force of an avalanche.

The seven-month timeline the System had adjusted was both a mercy and a death sentence. It gave Kai time to grow, but it meant he wouldn't be fighting a "student"—he would be fighting a Zhao Long who had another half-year of Tier 1 refinement under his belt. The match was set for the end of the first year's Final Examination.

"System," Kai whispered, his voice cracking the silence of the room. "If he is Tier 1, my physical stats alone are a joke. How does a Five-Elements foundation bridge a gap of an entire Tier?"

[System Notification: The Five-Elements Foundation does not follow linear growth.]

[Analysis: Most foundations rely on a single source of power. The Earthly Fiend draws only from the Earth. You, however, possess the Cycle of Generation.]

[Hidden Mechanic Revealed: The Elemental Wheel]

[Wood feeds Fire. Fire creates Earth. Earth bears Metal. Metal collects Water. Water nourishes Wood.]

[Current Objective: You must 'Ignite' each elemental node in your body. Until you do, you are effectively a Tier 0 Martial Artist with a large battery but no wires.]

Kai sat cross-legged on the floor. He closed his eyes and looked inward. In the center of his chest, five dim sparks of light orbited a central void. They were sluggish, barely moving. To even stand a chance against a Tier 1 powerhouse like Zhao Long, Kai needed to make those sparks roar into a wildfire.

The Departure and the First Bribe

The next morning, the farm was swarmed. It wasn't just the Association anymore. Black-tinted armored transports with the crests of various High Houses were parked along the dirt road, crushing the very vegetables Kai had spent years tending.

Robert was already outside, looking overwhelmed. He had a new set of high-grade leather armor, a gift from a minor clan hoping to curry favor with the "Commoner Legend." But when Kai stepped out, the atmosphere shifted. The recruiters didn't look at Kai with smiles; they looked at him with calculated greed.

A man in a sharp, silver suit stepped forward. He belonged to the House of Murong, a family known for their dominance in the Metal Element.

"Kai Hart," the man said, his voice like clashing blades. "The Five Elements is a greedy foundation. It requires five times the resources of a standard one. Without a Great House to fund your growth, you will starve your own potential before the first semester ends. Join us. We will provide the finest Metal-Essence stones to jumpstart your core."

Kai looked at the man's hand. He was holding a small, velvet box. Inside sat a Grade-4 Silver Marrow Stone. It was worth more than the entire village.

"And the price?" Kai asked.

"A simple marriage contract with our third-branch daughter," the man replied smoothly. "And a vow of fealty to House Murong for twenty years."

Kai felt a surge of heat in his chest—the Fire node responding to his anger. He wasn't a person to them; he was an investment. A rare tool to be bought and locked in a shed.

"I've already accepted a challenge from the Zhao Prince," Kai said, his voice echoing across the yard. "If I take your stone, does House Murong intend to stand between me and Zhao Long?"

The recruiter flinched. The Zhao Clan was a Tier 0 Great House—the highest authority below the Emperor. No one wanted to get caught in the crossfire of a Prince's "battle-lust."

"I thought as much," Kai said, walking past him toward the Association transport. "I'll find my own resources."

For the next few days, Kai did not leave his room. He ignored the celebratory feast Elder Sun had prepared; he ignored the recruiters knocking at the farm gate. He sat in a meditative trance, his breathing so slow it was almost non-existent. The System began to guide him through the Primordial Friction technique.

To kick-start the engine, Kai had to follow the natural order of the world. He began with Wood. Drawing the vitality from the surrounding cornfields and the ancient trees surrounding the farm, he forced the green essence into his Liver Node. It felt like thorns dragging through his veins, but slowly, a verdant spark caught.

As the Wood essence flared, it acted as fuel. Vitality turned into heat, feeding into his Heart Node. This was Fire. His body temperature soared, sweat turning to steam. The green vitality was consumed to create a roaring crimson flame.

The heat from the Fire then moved downward, its ash settling into his Spleen Node to form Earth. Kai felt his body become unnaturally heavy, his bones hardening as if they were being tempered in a kiln. The stability of the planet began to anchor his soul.

Deep within the Earth, pressure began to build, condensing the essence into his Lung Node. This was Metal. Kai's breathing became sharp, each inhale feeling like he was swallowing needles as his internal structure was reinforced with metallic Qi.

Finally, the Metal cooled, allowing moisture to condense and flow into his Kidney Node. This was Water. A cooling, dark tide swept through his body, quenching the fires and soothing the metal-strained pathways. The cycle was closed.

[The Five-Element Cycle is now Active.]

The kick-start was only half the battle. Kai realized that his Rank 3 foundation was a greedy eater. The moment the cycle began, it started ravenously consuming his physical stamina. He felt a bone-deep hunger that no amount of farm porridge could fill. "It's not enough," Kai gasped, his eyes snapping open with a faint prismatic glow. "I'm burning my own strength just to keep the wheel turning."
