Chapter 10 - chapter 9 : The Five-Colored Heaven

The morning of Kai's fourteenth birthday was unnaturally still. There was no wind to rustle the corn, no birdsong from the eaves—just a heavy, expectant silence that seemed to press down on the roof of Elder Sun's farmhouse. It was as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for the anomaly to reveal itself. Kai stood before the small, cracked mirror in his room, fastening his simple linen tunic with steady fingers. Underneath the cheap, coarse cloth, his skin hummed with a suppressed frequency. The months of "Internal Pressure Training" at the river bottom and the agonizing "Marrow-Purge" had transformed him into something more than human. His heart beat with the slow, powerful rhythm of a war drum, each thud circulating blood that felt as dense and hot as liquid mercury.

He walked out into the kitchen, where Robert was waiting. Robert looked significantly better than he had a week ago; the "Perfect-Grade" energy had finally begun to settle into his marrow, giving him a sharp, polished aura that made him stand out like a beacon of light in the dim, dusty farmhouse.

"You ready?" Robert asked, punching Kai lightly on the shoulder. He frowned for a split second, his knuckles feeling as though they had struck a wall of solid, ancient oak rather than a boy's shoulder. "Damn, Kai. You feel... solid. Like you're rooted into the planet itself."

"Just trying to keep up with a genius," Kai replied with a faint, knowing smile. He didn't tell Robert that his solidity was the result of a heart wall thickened by hundreds of hours of water-pressure resistance and bones forged by a System-assisted purge of every biological impurity he had ever consumed.

As they walked toward the Awakening Hall, the air in Sky City felt different. The "commoner miracle" of Robert's awakening had drawn a massive crowd, but today, the atmosphere was tinged with a strange, predatory hunger. The local merchants were betting on whether the farm could produce a "Double Miracle," but the true players—the observers from the Martial Arts Association—were watching with cold, clinical eyes. They didn't expect a second strike; they expected a return to the mean.

Inside the Sky City Awakening Hall, the architecture itself seemed to demand submission. The soaring marble pillars were inscribed with the names of the "Lords of the Era." High above the Resonance Pillar, etched into the soaring marble ceiling in letters of gold and obsidian, were the Heavenly Rankings. These were the ten foundations discovered in the five thousand years since the Great Qi Awakening—the only ones recognized as "Special Grades."

The list loomed over the hall, a testament to five millennia of human evolution:

Chaos Element: The origin and the end; the void before creation.

Primordial Qi: The raw, unrefined breath of the first world.

Five Elements: The perfect, self-sustaining cycle of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

Celestial Wind: The invisible blade that carves the heavens.

Absolute Ice: The stillness of the void that halts time itself.

Infernal Fire: The heat of a collapsing star.

Eternal Light / Abyssal Dark: The twin pillars of cosmic duality.

Eternal Wood: The undying vitality of the world-tree.

Ocean Waves: The relentless, crushing pressure of the deep.

Earthly Fiend: The brutal, unyielding strength of the planet's core.

Kai looked at the list, knowing that the Imperial Family and the Great Clans saw these as inherited rights. Robert's "Perfect-Grade" was the highest a commoner usually went, but it was still just the entry-level for the true rulers.

"Next! Kai of the Outer District!"

The voice of the priest echoed, and Kai stepped into the circle. In the VIP balcony, a young girl in a pale blue dress—the daughter of a local Marquess—didn't even look up from her book. Beside her sat a young man who looked like he was vibrating with barely suppressed energy. This was Prince Zhao Long. He didn't care about surnames; he lived for the "clash." He possessed the Rank 10 Earthly Fiend foundation, and he was already a second-year student at the Supreme Martial Arts Academy.

Kai placed his hands on the Resonance Pillar. He didn't wait for the machine to draw his Qi. He opened his "Vessel of Iron" and reached out. At first, the pillar went dark. A cold, vacuum-like silence swept through the hall. Then, the world began to scream.

The Qi in the hall manifested physically—the Elemental Convergence. From the wooden rafters, vibrant green light spiraled down. From the braziers, streaks of crimson fire tore loose. The stones emitted a golden-brown mist, the moisture condensed into blue vapor, and the copper veins in the floor hummed with silver brilliance.

All five elemental energies converged on Kai, spiraling around him in a violent, beautiful vortex. With a sound like a mountain splitting, the Resonance Pillar erupted. A pillar of five-colored energy—green, red, brown, silver, and blue—shot straight up, tearing through the roof and illuminating Sky City in a prismatic dawn.

The priest fell to his knees. "Rank Three..." he whispered. "The Five Elements... from the mud?"

In the balcony, Prince Zhao Long stood up, his eyes widening with a terrifying, ecstatic hunger. His own Earthly Fiend Qi flared instinctively, a muddy brown aura that growled against the elemental pressure. He wasn't thinking about politics; he was thinking about how it would feel to trade blows with a Rank 3.

Robert stood at the back, his jaw dropped. He finally understood the secret Kai had been keeping. As the light reached its zenith, a familiar blue screen flickered in Kai's vision.

[Hidden Quest Completed: The Path of the Forbidden]

[Objective: Awaken a Special-Grade Foundation (Rank 3 or Higher)]

[Reward: 800 EXP]

[Level Up! Level Up!]

[Current Level: 7 | Stat Points Gained: 4]

Kai stood at the center of the storm, eyes glowing with five colors. His "Vessel of Iron" held firm. He looked up at the officials, his voice calm. "Is the result verified?"

The lead official descended, looking worried. "Kai of the Outer District... you have manifested the Five Elements Special-Grade. You are now a National Talent Candidate."

As Kai stepped off the platform, the crowd parted like the Red Sea. But before he could reach Robert, a heavy, suffocating pressure slammed into the room. A tall figure leaped from the VIP balcony, landing with a bone-jarring thud on the marble floor.

It was Zhao Long. Up close, the Prince was a mountain of muscle and refined arrogance. His eyes were locked on Kai, ignoring the priests and the guards.

"Five Elements," Zhao Long said, his voice a low growl of excitement. "Rank Three. Not bad for a commoner."

The Association guards moved to intervene, but Zhao Long raised a hand, his Rank 10 Earthly Fiend aura flaring so brightly the guards froze in their tracks. He stepped closer to Kai, stopping just inches from his face. Kai didn't flinch; he met the Prince's gaze with the cold stillness of a deep lake.

"I am Zhao Long, second-year at the Supreme Martial Arts Academy," the Prince declared, a feral grin spreading across his face. "In two months, you'll be a freshman. Most people will try to bootlick you or bury you. I don't care about either."

He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper that carried the weight of a sledgehammer. "When you get to the Academy, find me. I want to see if that Five-Element light of yours can handle the weight of the Earth. We're going to exchange blows, Kai Hart. Don't disappoint me by getting expelled before the first month is up."

Zhao Long turned on his heel, his cloak snapping in the wind of his own aura, and walked out of the hall without a second look

Kai watched Zhao Long go, the Prince's heavy footsteps still echoing against the marble like distant thunder. Robert ran up to him, eyes wide and breath hitched in his throat. "Kai... did a Prince just challenge you? A fresher? He's already a ranked fighter at the Supreme Academy!"

Kai didn't answer immediately. He was staring at the space where the Prince had stood, still feeling the lingering heat of that Rank 10 Earthly Fiend aura. It was a brutal, crushing pressure, like being at the bottom of a deep ocean. Just as he went to adjust his grip on his new badge, a sharp chime rang in his mind—louder and more authoritative than any notification he had received before.

[System Notification: Sudden Quest Triggered!]

[Quest Name: The Mountain's Invitation]

[Description: The Rank 10 Earthly Fiend, Zhao Long, has recognized your potential. He intends to use you as a whetstone for his own path. To survive the Supreme Martial Arts Academy, you must not only reach his level but surpass it.]

[Condition: Accept the challenge of Zhao Long and win the first "Official Exchange" at the Academy.]

[Reward for Acceptance: Unlock "Elemental Cultivation Technique: Primordial Cycle".]

[Penalty for Failure/Rejection: Permanent 20% reduction in Five-Elements Qi Purity.]

[Do you accept the challenge of the Earthly Fiend?]

Kai's heart skipped a beat. The penalty was devastating. In the world of cultivation, "Purity" was everything; a 20% drop would essentially downgrade his Rank 3 foundation to something far less legendary. But the reward—a Primordial-tier technique—was something even the Great Clans would kill to possess.

He wants to use me as a whetstone? Kai thought, a cold, sharp light flickering in his five-colored eyes. Let's see who breaks first.

"System," Kai whispered internally, his voice devoid of doubt. "Accept."

[Quest Accepted. Countdown to fight: 7 months ]

Kai turned to Robert, who was still staring at the hole in the roof. The farmhand who had spent fourteen years tilling soil and hiding in shadows was gone. In his place stood a young man whose very presence seemed to vibrate with the power of a brewing storm.

"He didn't just challenge me, Robert," Kai said, his voice steady. "He gave me a reason to get stronger. We aren't going to the Academy to study. We're going there to take over."
