Piper's POV
Scarlet's posture remained carefully non-confrontational. She knew the hierarchy. The Valois work under the Thornes. She wouldn't risk acting superior in front of me. "I was just curious," she said, her voice a careful blend of respect and sly curiosity. "As to why you came to see them. The triplets."
I already knew her presence at their office, her possessive fury when I'd dismissed her—it painted a clear, pathetic picture. "Why?" I asked, letting a mocking smile play on my lips. "Are you also interested in them?"
Scarlet's eyes flashed, but she kept her voice even. "They are the ones I've been aiming for. For a long time."
"Ah," I said, feigning a sudden, dramatic realization. "I remember now. The Valois girl was desperate for a rare enchantment. One strong enough to… simulate a mate bond." I let my eyes widen in fake shock. "Don't tell me they were your target? Those three?"
"Yes," Scarlet admitted, her jaw tight. The admission clearly cost her pride.
