Moses continued , "If a prophet or someone who claims to have dreams appears among you and predicts a sign or wonder, and that sign or wonder actually happens, yet afterward he says, 'Come, let us follow other gods you have not known and worship them,' do not listen to him. The Lord your God is testing you—to know if you truly love Him with all your heart and soul. It is the Lord your God you must follow and revere. Keep His commands, obey His voice, serve Him, and hold firmly to Him."
"That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, for he has spoken rebellion against the Lord your God, the One who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He has tried to turn you away from the path the Lord commanded you to walk. You must remove such evil from among you."
"If your brother, your son or daughter, the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly whispers to you, 'Let us go and worship other gods'—whether they are near or far, gods you or your ancestors have never known—do not listen or give in. Show no pity, do not spare them or hide them. You must put that person to death. Your own hand must strike first, and then the hands of all the people. Stone them, because they tried to lead you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt. When Israel hears of it, they will be afraid, and no one will ever do such a wicked thing again."
"If you hear that in one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you, some wicked people have led others astray, saying, 'Let us worship other gods,' you must investigate carefully. If it is true, and this detestable thing has happened, you must destroy that town completely—every person and every animal. Gather everything in the middle of the public square and burn it all as a whole offering to the Lord your God. Let it remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt."
"Keep none of the things set apart for destruction, so that the Lord will turn from His fierce anger and show you mercy, have compassion, and make you prosper as He promised your ancestors. This will happen if you obey the Lord your God, keeping all His commands and doing what is right in His sight."
