Moses reminded the people, "You are the children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your heads for the dead, for you are holy to Him. Out of all the nations on earth, the Lord has chosen you to be His treasured people."
He continued, "Do not eat anything detestable. You may eat animals such as the ox, sheep, goat, deer, gazelle, roe deer, wild goat, ibex, antelope, and mountain sheep—any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and chews the cud. But do not eat the camel, rabbit, or coney, for though they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof. The pig also is unclean because it has a split hoof but does not chew the cud. Do not eat their meat or touch their carcasses."
"Of all living creatures in the water, you may eat those that have fins and scales, but any without fins or scales are unclean for you. You may eat any clean bird, but not these: the eagle, vulture, black vulture, red kite, black kite, any kind of falcon, any kind of raven, the owl family, gulls, hawks, storks, herons, the hoopoe, and the bat. All flying insects that swarm are unclean, but any clean winged creature you may eat."
"Do not eat anything that has died on its own. You may give it to a foreigner or sell it to a stranger, but you are a people set apart for the Lord your God. And do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk."
Moses also instructed, "Set aside a tenth of all your harvest each year. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine, oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord at the place He will choose, so that you may always learn to fear Him. But if the place is too far, exchange your tithe for silver and take the money with you. Use it to buy whatever you wish—cattle, sheep, wine, or anything your heart desires. Then eat and rejoice before the Lord with your household. And remember the Levites among you, for they have no land of their own."
"At the end of every three years, gather a tenth of your produce and store it in your towns. This way, the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows among you may come and eat their fill. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all the work of your hands."
