Moses continued speaking to Israel, teaching them how to live in a way that pleased the Lord and kept the camp holy.
He said, "No man who has been emasculated or cut in his body may enter the assembly of the Lord. No one born of a forbidden union, nor his descendants, may join the Lord's assembly, even up to the tenth generation. The same applies to the Ammonites and Moabites. They must never be allowed among the people of the Lord because they did not meet you with bread and water when you came out of Egypt. Instead, they hired Balaam son of Beor to curse you.
But the Lord your God refused to listen to Balaam. He turned the curse into a blessing because He loves you. Therefore, never seek peace or friendship with them as long as you live.
Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, for you were once strangers in his land. Their third generation born among you may join the Lord's assembly."
Moses also gave laws for when they went to war. "When you are in camp against your enemies, keep yourselves from anything unclean. If any man becomes unclean during the night, he must go outside the camp and remain there. When evening comes, he shall wash himself, and after sunset, he may return.
Set apart a place outside the camp to relieve yourselves. Carry a tool with you, and when you go, dig a hole and cover up your waste. The Lord your God walks among your camp to protect you and give you victory over your enemies. Keep your camp holy so that He will not turn away from you."
He also said, "If a slave escapes from his master and comes to you for refuge, do not hand him back. Let him live wherever he chooses within your land, and do not mistreat him.
No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. You must not bring the earnings of a prostitute, male or female, into the house of the Lord your God for any vow, because such things are detestable to Him.
Do not charge your fellow Israelite interest on money, food, or anything that can gain profit. You may charge a foreigner interest, but not your brother, so that the Lord may bless everything you do in the land you are about to possess.
If you make a vow to the Lord, do not delay in keeping it. The Lord your God will surely require it from you, and if you fail, it will be counted as sin. But if you do not make a vow, you are not guilty. Whatever you promise with your mouth, be careful to fulfill, because you made it freely before God.
When you enter your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat grapes until you are satisfied, but do not carry any away in a basket. And when you walk through your neighbor's field, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but you must not cut any with a sickle."
