Moses continued to teach the Israelites, saying, "If a man marries a woman, and later finds something indecent about her and decides to divorce her, he must give her a certificate of divorce, place it in her hand, and send her away. If she then becomes another man's wife, and her second husband either divorces her or dies, her first husband must never take her back again. This would be detestable before the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance."
He added, "If a man has just married, he must not be sent to war or be given any duty for one year. He is to stay home and bring joy to the wife he has married.
Do not take a pair of millstones—or even the upper stone—as security for a debt, because that would be taking away a man's livelihood. If anyone kidnaps an Israelite and sells or enslaves him, the kidnapper must die. You must remove such evil from among you."
Moses reminded them, "Be careful to follow the priestly instructions concerning diseases like leprosy, just as I commanded them. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on your way from Egypt."
He continued, "When you lend anything to your neighbor, do not go into his house to collect the pledge. Stay outside, and let him bring it to you. If he is poor, do not sleep with his pledge. Return his cloak by sunset so that he may sleep in it and bless you. The Lord your God will count it as righteousness."
"Do not take advantage of a poor or needy worker, whether he is an Israelite or a foreigner living in your town. Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he depends on them. If he cries out to the Lord against you, you will be guilty of sin.
Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers. Each person must die for his own sin."
Moses commanded them again, "Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the orphan, and do not take a widow's cloak as security. Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I command you to show mercy."
"When you harvest your field and forget a sheaf of grain, do not go back for it. Leave it for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless all the work of your hands. When you beat your olive trees, do not go over the branches again. Leave what remains for the poor and the widows. When you gather grapes from your vineyard, do not go over them a second time. Leave what remains for those in need.
Remember—you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to show compassion."
