Chapter 174 - Chapter 173: Justice, Fairness, and the Memory of Amalek

Moses continued teaching the people, saying, "When men have a dispute, they must take it to court, and the judges will decide the case—declaring the innocent free and condemning the guilty. If the guilty person deserves to be beaten, the judge will have him lie down and be flogged in his presence, according to the seriousness of his offense. But he must not be given more than forty lashes; any more would bring disgrace upon your brother."

He added, "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain."

Then Moses spoke about family duty: "If brothers live together and one dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law, so that the dead brother's name will continue through their first son and not be wiped from Israel. But if the man refuses to marry her, the widow shall go to the town elders and say, 'My husband's brother refuses to continue his brother's family line.' The elders will summon him and speak with him, but if he still refuses, the widow shall remove one of his sandals, spit in his face, and say, 'This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother's family.' From then on, his family will be known as The Family of the Unsandaled."

Moses also warned them, "If two men are fighting and the wife of one reaches out to rescue her husband by seizing the other man's private parts, you must cut off her hand. Show her no pity."

He continued, "Do not keep two differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light. Do not have two differing measures in your house, one large and one small. You must use honest and accurate weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. For the Lord detests anyone who deals dishonestly."

Finally, Moses said, "Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you came out of Egypt—how they attacked you when you were tired and weak, striking down those who lagged behind. They had no fear of God. When the Lord your God gives you rest from all your enemies in the land He is giving you, you must blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!"
