Chapter 264: He's from the Weather Bureau!
"Unfortunately, Clawitzer's talent for Aura was just a little lacking. Otherwise, I wouldn't have needed Togekiss to beat that Lileep," Mortimer sighed to himself.
Aura was a type of spiritual energy, a type of psychic energy, and a type of life energy.
Besides the Psi-Ops Bureau, the Life Energy Bureau also conducted a good amount of research into Aura, though perhaps not as in-depth as their counterparts. A major reason Mortimer had received so much support from the Life Energy Bureau was that his Togekiss could sense Aura.
Unfortunately, Mortimer himself seemed to have no talent for it. Otherwise, he probably wouldn't have come to Saffron University. He would have been taken in as a disciple by one of the Bureau's masters and personally trained.
But Pokémon that could sense Aura were one in a million, and humans who could were even rarer. Mortimer had already come to terms with it.
"Is that Mortimer's true strength? The moment Togekiss came out, it sealed the victory in less than thirty seconds. That was a complete stomp!"
It wasn't just the students from Centralis University; even the Saffron U students were dumbfounded, as if they were seeing Mortimer for the first time.
In the past, Mortimer had never shown off Togekiss's Aura Sphere. But even without it, he had always been at the top, suppressing all the other freshmen in the reserve.
At this moment, the freshmen all felt the gap between them.
Sure enough, there were levels to being a Rookie King.
But while the Saffron U crowd was getting fired up, some were also worried. Although Togekiss had won, it was now badly poisoned—a very disadvantageous debuff. And since it had already been afflicted, even a move like Safeguard couldn't remove it.
"Will the red team's trainer please send out their third Pokémon!"
Seeing Basalt standing motionless for a long time, the referee waved his flag, urging him on.
"Return, Lileep."
Basalt nodded, recalled Lileep, and then threw out his third Pokéball.
"Brooonz!"
With a deep chime, the incomparably massive Bronzong appeared. The moment it opened its eyes, the crowd felt a powerful psychic energy sweep across the entire battlefield.
"Why is that Bronzong so big?"
On the Saffron U side, no one had ever seen a Bronzong of this size. Their eyes were filled with shock. It was just... too big.
It was the feeling an average person might get if they were suddenly standing in front of a 3.5-meter-tall giant.
"Another Steel-type Pokémon?"
Although he was also shocked by Bronzong's size, a rare look of disappointment appeared on Mortimer's face.
His Togekiss knew a special move—Psycho Shift. This Psychic-type move allowed it to transfer its own status condition to the opponent. He had been holding onto it, hoping to pass the poison to Basalt's third Pokémon.
Toxic was a move that the vast majority of Pokémon, aside from Poison and Steel-types, were terrified of. Once hit, the consequences were dire.
Unfortunately, Basalt's third Pokémon just happened to be a Steel-type. What a waste.
But Mortimer wasn't discouraged. If everything went smoothly, his Togekiss might be able to repeat its previous performance and secure a quick victory. If that was the case, he could just cure the poison after he won.
"Extreme Speed!"
The moment the battle began, Mortimer gave the command again, his eyes shining. He was all too familiar with Togekiss's combo of Extreme Speed to start, followed by a continuous Air Slash pressure, and finishing with Aura Sphere. If he got lucky, he wouldn't even need the finisher; Air Slash alone could suppress the opponent to death.
CLANG!
A flash of white light, and Togekiss had already crossed the distance, striking Bronzong's body.
A sound like the tolling of a great bell rang out, but Bronzong didn't move an inch.
Compared to Bronzong's immense size and weight, the force of Togekiss's physical attack was completely insignificant. They weren't in the same league.
But Mortimer didn't care too much. Extreme Speed was just the appetizer. The special attacks, Air Slash and Aura Sphere, were the main course.
Perhaps switching Aura Sphere to Flamethrower or Shadow Ball would be a good choice? Mortimer's lips curled up. No one can interrupt Togekiss's combo anyway.
And in the next second, his smile froze.
"Toge-kiss?"
On the battlefield, something seemed to have gone wrong with Togekiss. Although its combo was second nature, for some reason, just as it was about to use Air Slash, its body suddenly faltered, as if it had gotten stuck. At the same time, Mortimer felt that its movements had become clumsy.
"What's going on?" Mortimer was horrified.
"It's Speed Swap."
Basalt smiled, "helpfully" providing the answer.
From the moment Bronzong had entered the field, Basalt had been communicating with it telepathically, explaining how tricky Togekiss and its combo were. So, Bronzong was not unprepared.
Coincidentally, Togekiss's Extreme Speed had been too weak to have any real effect on Bronzong, let alone disrupt its flow of psychic energy.
And so, Togekiss had fallen into the trap. Its speed had been swapped with Bronzong's.
Basalt laughed wantonly. "Heavy Slam!"
Today, I'm going to complete this flex.
Goal: a one-trainer clean sweep!
The Steel-type Heavy Slam was super-effective against the Fairy-type Togekiss. Combined with Bronzong's weight... if it hit, a one-shot KO was practically guaranteed.
And to make matters worse, Togekiss was less than five meters away from Bronzong.
Too close!
In an instant, the tables had turned once again.
Especially for the Saffron U students. They had gone from the clouds to the abyss in a single moment. Their hearts were now in their throats.
Are we going to lose again?
This Basalt was a demon lord, his trump cards endless.
But fortunately, Togekiss was no slouch.
With a flash of white light, at the last possible second, it teleported away.
"Extreme Speed again!"
Basalt's brow furrowed slightly. "This move is really a pain. It can be used not only for attacking but also for movement and dodging."
This was the effect of developing a move to a deeper level, a common sight in real battles. Just like how Agility could be used for movement, Swords Dance could be used for a degree of defense, and Flame Charge was a three-in-one move for attacking, moving, and boosting stats.
"Togekiss, Heal Bell!"
With its combo broken, Mortimer knew he couldn't defeat Basalt quickly. Having no other choice, Togekiss had to try and heal itself. If this dragged on any longer, it wouldn't be able to hold out.
Heal Bell, a Normal-type move. It lets out a soothing chime that cures all status conditions for the user's party. It had to be said, Togekiss's support move pool was quite rich.
"Bronzong, Gravity!"
Basalt went in for the kill. Against a Flying-type Pokémon, Gravity was always the ultimate weapon, especially Bronzong's super-amplified version.
"Toge-kiss!"
Having just cured its poison, Togekiss didn't even have time to celebrate before it was caught by the gravity and slammed hard into the ground. Although its wings were large and its mastery of Flying-type energy was pure, against the super-amplified gravity, it was helpless.
The only thing it could do was use Roost as it landed, recovering a wave of health before trying to find another chance to win.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't get that chance.
Thud!
Togekiss landed on its little feet. At the same time, its health was restored, its body once again pristine.
"Heavy Slam!"
"Flamethrower!"
Almost simultaneously, Basalt and Mortimer's voices rang out.
Seeing this, everyone focused their attention. They knew the decisive moment had arrived.
In terms of moves, Flamethrower had the advantage, as it could hit the opponent first. But in terms of power, Heavy Slam was clearly superior, and it was also Bronzong's STAB move. In terms of typing, both moves were super-effective against the other.
Now it all depended on whether Bronzong could withstand the Flamethrower. If it could, Basalt would win. If not, Togekiss would likely be victorious.
FWOOSH!
A thick stream of fire shot out from Togekiss's mouth, incredibly hot.
WHOOSH!
Bronzong, enveloped in a white, metallic glow, charged into the massive pillar of fire and pushed straight through it, unstoppable.
Its incredible fire resistance was Bronzong's ultimate confidence. Togekiss wasn't even a Fire-type Pokémon; its use of fire moves was amateurish. It had no hope of suppressing Super Bell.
DOOOONG!
The sound of a great bell rang out again. Super Bell, still wreathed in flames, slammed into Togekiss's body, sending it flying out of the battlefield and crashing hard into the wall. The wall cracked, fissures spreading out like a spiderweb.
"Togekiss is unable to battle! The winner is... the blue team's trainer, Basalt!"
The referee quickly made the call.
As for Mortimer, his mouth hung open, as if he couldn't accept this outcome.
"That enormous size, that super-strong gravity, and it can just tank a Flamethrower and counter-kill? Who are you?"
Mortimer's face was full of unwillingness as he stared at Basalt from across the field. He was already one of the top geniuses in the nation, much stronger than an ordinary Rookie King. But against Basalt, in three consecutive battles, he had been completely suppressed. It made him want to vomit blood.
"He... is from the Weather Bureau!"
Just then, a dignified voice suddenly rang out.
