Chapter 122 - Chapter 124 Methods

"Nick Fury, you need to understand your position—and the consequences of every word you say. You're speaking now as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and commander of that helicarrier. I suggest you consider carefully."

The screens all went black.

A moment later, a system-wide message was broadcast across the Helicarrier: Nick Fury has been relieved of duty—both as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and commander of the Helicarrier.

Elsewhere on the carrier, Agent Garrett, a Level 8 operative, received an encrypted message:

"Deploy a nuclear missile. Target: Manhattan."

"Director, both of our nuclear-equipped jets just launched!" Agent Hill called out as Fury stormed back into the command center.

"Damn it!" Fury cursed and dashed out of the room.

By the time he reached the deck, both jets were airborne. Fury looked up, panic in his eyes, and immediately opened a private channel:

"Tony, two jets armed with nukes are headed your way. They'll level Manhattan in under three minutes."

Down below, in the middle of fighting a squad of Chitauri soldiers, Tony received Fury's call.

"JARVIS, locate Clark's current position."Tony knew one suit wasn't enough to stop two nukes. He needed backup—Clark.

At that moment, Clark had just finished crushing the last Leviathan beast and spotted Tony flying toward him.

"Clark, we've got two nukes incoming. ETA: three minutes."Tony wasted no time—he laid it all out in one breath.

"Nukes?"Clark's face changed. Suddenly he remembered—the movie. In the film, there was just one nuke, and Tony had flung it into the portal to destroy the Chitauri mothership.

Clark glanced at the sky.

The portal was already closed. But it didn't matter. As long as the nukes didn't detonate on Earth, they were manageable.

"Leave it to me," Clark said, scanning the sky and quickly spotting the two bombers.

BOOM!With a sonic shockwave, Clark vanished from Tony's sight.

"JARVIS, divert all remaining power to my thrusters!"Tony launched after the missiles too—but he was clearly slower.

By the time Tony cleared Manhattan's airspace, Clark had already reached within 500 meters of the two nukes.

Clark rubbed his palms together. Twin ropes of glowing golden energy formed between them—energy lassos, similar in appearance to Diana's magic lasso.

He flung both ropes outward.

In an instant, the lassos shot hundreds of meters through the air and snared both nuclear warheads. Then Clark, with a fierce pull, accelerated straight toward outer space—dragging both live nukes behind him.

Time was short. The missiles had already been armed. His only option was to carry them off-world.

"Sir, Clark has already entered space with both nukes," JARVIS reported.

"Yeah... I see him…" Tony muttered, watching the sky, stunned.

Having thrown the nukes far into space, Clark immediately returned to the battlefield in New York.

The fight had dragged on. Only Diana and the Hulk still had energy to spare.

The others—Captain America, Natasha, and Hawkeye—were visibly exhausted.

Luckily, Thor had joined them with Loki in tow. But even with these reinforcements, the team of six was barely holding it together against the overwhelming Chitauri forces.

"Clark, there are too many of them. What can you do?"Tony landed next to him, his suit scratched and scorched from battle.

He did a rough count—there were still close to 10,000 Chitauri soldiers scattered across the city.

They weren't unbeatable, but they were equipped with advanced energy weapons and personal flight gear. Against local law enforcement, they were unstoppable.

Even Tony, with his firepower, couldn't engage more than five of them at once without pulling back to avoid being overwhelmed. His suit was out of ammo, and all he had left were his arc-reactor-powered repulsor blasts.

He might have downed hundreds, but hundreds meant nothing against ten thousand.

Clark shook his head.

The Chitauri were spread all throughout the city, hiding in buildings and moving through streets. He could unleash his full power and wipe them all out with a wide-area attack, but that would also obliterate the civilians still in the city.

That wasn't an option.

"All we can do now," Clark said, blasting several airborne Chitauri with heat vision, "is hold the line. Keep them inside Manhattan. Don't let a single one escape. Kill as many as we can—and thank god the portal is closed. No more are coming through."

"Got it," Tony nodded, looking around at the enemies still crawling across rooftops and sidewalks. He turned to the others.

"Steve, how are you guys holding up?"

"Still standing!"Captain America took a deep breath and flexed his sore arms. His left hand was going numb from gripping the shield too long.
