Meanwhile, every missile launched from the Quinjets exploded mid-air. Yet the pilots had no idea how the missiles detonated—one moment they were flying, the next, they were gone, as if the explosions had been triggered by an unseen force.
Before the detonation, the pilots of all ten Quinjets hadn't spotted any viable targets. Moreover, the missiles exploded at different altitudes and distances—some far away, some dangerously close. It wasn't caused by an air barrier or an ion shield.
The pilots soon realized the cause when they saw Clark, clad in his red cape, appear before them.
"Report! Squad One has visual on Superman! Squad One has visual on Superman!"
The lead pilot tried to radio the sighting back to headquarters, but before he could finish, Clark vanished from view—and the next instant, the jet exploded.
The explosion was so sudden and fierce that neither pilot could activate their ejection seats. Flames engulfed both of them in an instant.
But these two were not alone. At the same moment, the other nine Quinjets also exploded in succession.
To Clark, these Earth-bound jets and their weapons posed virtually no threat, constrained as they were by their operators' limitations. Even the missiles were like toys. He simply smashed each missile with a punch, detonating them one by one.
The missiles' speed and the resulting shockwaves couldn't keep up with Clark. In other words, at his current speed and reflexes, he could easily move out of the blast radius even if a missile detonated directly above his head.
Even nuclear warheads wouldn't faze him—at worst, he'd feel the shockwave, which, given his strength, was nothing.
After neutralizing the SHIELD operatives, Clark glanced back at Skull Island. Steve and the others were already approaching the portal area.
Since SHIELD had launched the attack, Clark decided it was best for Steve and his team to head to New Jersey first. Clark himself planned to investigate who had ordered the assault on Skull Island.
He suspected Hydra. In the Marvel universe, Hydra was notoriously bold. Time and again, they survived through sheer cunning, defying logic and narrative constraints. If not for editorial luck, they would have been wiped out long ago.
As for the team headed to New Jersey, and how they would handle the loss of Hydra's fighter jets, Clark trusted Tony would provide guidance. After all, unlike in the original Captain America: The Winter Soldier film, Steve now had Superman and Iron Man as allies, with Tony mastering the digital battlefield.
In the original story, Steve could succeed on his own. Now, with Tony as a teammate, Clark felt he truly had a chance. If all went smoothly, Steve might even destroy all three Hydra space carriers.
Though these spacecraft weren't a personal threat to Clark, they were a massive deterrent to ordinary humans. If Hydra deployed them against Steve's allies, Clark would be forced into a defensive stance. With the current justification in hand, he intended to crush Hydra's plot before it could fully unfold.
Clark also knew that eventually, Steve and the others would expose SHIELD's internal corruption. Everyone knew there were spies within the organization, but couldn't identify who was loyal and who was a traitor—this allowed Hydra to remain hidden.
But Hydra's days were numbered. By giving Clark a reason to strike, they had sealed their fate.
Skull Island was nearly 3,000 kilometers from New York—a vast distance. But for Clark, it would take only 100 seconds to arrive. Though still a long journey, it was quick for him.
By the time Garrett and his cohorts learned that their jets had been destroyed, Clark was already above SHIELD's Triskelion base. Yet, knowing that many good people remained inside—like Steve's current girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend's niece, Sharon Carter—Clark didn't attack directly.
He reasoned that destroying SHIELD outright might deeply hurt Steve and damage their relationship.
Upon arriving at the base, Clark didn't appear openly. Instead, he listened carefully, monitoring SHIELD's internal movements. At his speed, the Hydra units likely hadn't had time to react.
As for SHIELD's soundproofing installations within the walls, Clark found them virtually useless.
Perhaps because of Nick Fury's death and the impending Insight Plan, Hydra's SHIELD operatives were less vigilant than before.
Once he confirmed there were no intruders or observers nearby, many Hydra operatives began discussing their future—what to do once they controlled Earth, for example.
This gave Clark the advantage. From his eavesdropping, he realized there weren't many Hydra robots inside the base; the majority were stationed below in the space transport vessels.
He discovered that the three spacecraft were almost entirely Hydra's.
While this revelation surprised him, it also brought relief. After all, greater focus made it easier to dismantle them.
