Chapter 34 - Chapter 33: Ghost of the Flamewalker

"To rewrite the gods' story, one must first confront the ones who tried."

The stars above the City of Stars began to fade—not because light was failing, but because something older was approaching.

Skyler stood at the edge of the Archive's central spire, staring into the void beneath timelines. A place that had no name. A place that should not be remembered.

But now it called to him.

And when he blinked, he was no longer standing in the Archive.

He was somewhere else entirely.

---

Ash-black skies.

A world lit only by the dim afterglow of a long-dead sun.

The air hung heavy with echoes.

This was Eroth-Val, the place where the first Witness burned alive, and the last time a Novaah tried to unwrite the gods.

And waiting for him—half-real, half-remnant—was the Ghost of the Flamewalker.

A figure wreathed in dying fire.

Once known as Maekros Novaah, a distant ancestor, long-erased from every timeline.

The only Novaah before Skyler who had ever tried to defy the divine Archive.

And failed.

---

Skyler stepped forward, his own flames pulsing in rhythm with the cursed soil.

Maekros turned.

He was tall, thin, and broken—his robes torn, eyes hollow, the seal-brands of the Council still burned across his chest.

"You found this place," the ghost rasped, his voice like wind blowing through ash.

"Then it's already too late."

Skyler narrowed his eyes.

"You tried to do what I'm about to do."

"You tried to rewrite the gods' story."

Maekros smiled—a tired, sad smile.

"I didn't fail because I was wrong."

"I failed because I was early."

"The Archive wasn't ready. And neither was I."

He stepped closer, his presence not cold, but searing. Not fire… memory heat.

"You carry more flame than I ever did," he said.

"And your blood sings louder than mine ever dared."

---

The sky rippled, and behind Maekros, the ruins of a flame-temple appeared.

Stone pillars carved with forgotten names.

Symbols Skyler recognized from the burned stories. Symbols from the Book That Shouldn't Exist.

Skyler felt the Archive resonate.

"Why was this place hidden?"

Maekros turned to the ruins.

"Because this is where I first remembered who we were. And they couldn't let it happen again."

"So they shattered me. Sealed me in the echo."

"But even the gods couldn't erase a Witness's flame completely."

He placed a hand on Skyler's shoulder.

"You've lit a path I could not. But that path leads somewhere dark."

"To rewrite their story… you must burn deeper than I ever did."

"You must enter the Flame Core."

Skyler swallowed hard. "What is that?"

Maekros looked skyward, toward a place that felt like it wasn't in the sky but beneath it.

"It's the First Flame. The spark that predates gods, worlds, and even memory."

"It was what made us Novaah."

"And it is what the gods stole."

---

The world began to dissolve—the ghost's time almost over.

Maekros stepped back, his body unraveling like smoke.

"When you stand before the Flame Core, remember this, Skyler Novaah—"

"You are not rewriting a story."

"You are unveiling it."

"The gods were not authors. They were editors."

"And you… you are the original script."

---

As Maekros vanished, the world of Eroth-Val crumbled behind him.

Skyler blinked—returning to the Archive's spire, where Eon and Aelira waited.

He staggered, but stood tall.

His flame no longer just remembered.

It now knew.

"We're going to the Flame Core," he said.

"We're going to rewrite the beginning."
