Chapter 223 - Chapter 222 — Light of the Emperor

Chapter 222 — Light of the Emperor

The battlefield did not quiet down after the entity landed.

If anything, it grew worse.

The Chitauri moved again.

Not just the ones touched by the spreading corruption, but all of them. The moment the massive ship above lost control, something else had taken hold. Orders no longer came from above. There was no structure, no coordination.

Only movement.

Only attack.

There was no pattern anymore. No formations. No restraint.

They moved like something driven by instinct alone, reckless, relentless.

Whatever had been controlling them before… was gone.

They surged forward again, throwing themselves into the fight without hesitation.

Across the field, Black Panther met one head-on.

The alien lunged at him, its movements sharper than before, less controlled but more aggressive. T'Challa stepped in, grabbed it mid-motion, and drove it straight into the ground with force.

The impact cracked the surface beneath them.

Before, that would have ended it instantly.

The Chitauri never got back up from something like that.

The Chitauri's chest caved in under the strike.

But it didn't stop.

Its limbs twitched.

Then it moved again.

It pushed itself up, broken body dragging forward as it swung at him again.

T'Challa's eyes narrowed.

He reacted instantly, claws flashing as he cut across its neck in a clean motion. The head separated from the body.

The body still moved.

It staggered forward, arms swinging wildly without direction.

T'Challa stepped back slightly, watching it.

"…they're still moving," he said into the comms, voice calm but firm. "Even after decapitation."

He moved again, striking the torso harder this time, breaking it further, forcing it down.

"We can't kill them the usual way."

Shuri's voice came through, quick and focused.

"The corrupted ones aren't alive the same way anymore. You need to break them apart completely or burn them. That's the only way to stop them."

T'Challa didn't reply.

He had already understood.

Around the battlefield, the same thing was happening.

Enemies that should have fallen were getting back up.

Bodies that should have stayed still kept moving.

The fight had changed.

Above the ground, Valkyrie rode across the battlefield on her Pegasus.

She moved quickly, scanning below as she passed over groups of fighters struggling to keep up.

Before, the Chitauri had been dangerous.

Now, they were worse.

At least before, they could be killed.

Now, they kept coming back unless completely destroyed.

She glanced toward the center.

Toward the eye.

It still floated there, unmoving, its attention fixed on one point.

Gaius.

She frowned slightly.

It wasn't looking at anyone else.

Not Thor.

Not the sorcerers.

Not even the mass of forces around it.

Just him.

Part of her found that… humiliating.

She had fought gods, monsters, armies.

And still, she wasn't even worth its attention.

Another part felt relief.

If it looked at her the same way it looked at Gaius…

she wasn't sure she would still be in the air.

At least it wasn't focused on the rest of them.

A scream pulled her attention back.

One of the Asgardian soldiers was being dragged down by a Chitauri.

Valkyrie turned immediately, guiding her mount downward in a sharp dive.

She struck hard, smashing into the alien and knocking it aside before it could do more damage.

The soldier scrambled back, breathing hard.

Valkyrie didn't stop.

She moved again, keeping herself between him and the enemy.

"Stay up," she said simply.

Then she turned back to the fight.

On another side of the battlefield, the Ultramarines held their line.

Titus stood at the front.

"Kill these abominations!" he called out.

His voice carried across the formation.

The Bladeguard veterans raised their bolters and fired.

The weapons roared, each shot tearing through corrupted bodies, blasting limbs apart, crushing torsos, destroying heads.

They didn't aim to kill.

They aimed to disable.

To break.

The formation they held was tight, but not rigid.

It wasn't random.

The spacing accounted for larger threats, creatures like the Leviathans that could crash through lines if they stood too close.

There was space between them, enough to move, to adjust, to respond to the chaos around them.

They fought with discipline.

With purpose.

When enemies got close, they switched weapons without hesitation.

Bolters lowered.

Swords drawn.

Each strike was heavy, controlled, precise.

They didn't waste movement.

Behind them, the Dreadnought advanced slowly.

Its massive frame moved with weight and certainty.

The gatling weapon spun.

Then fired.

The stream of rounds tore through groups of enemies, shredding them apart, keeping the pressure away from the line.

Behind them stood others.

Spider-Man.

Several sorcerers.

And the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Star-Lord watched the Ultramarines in action, his head turning slightly as he tried to follow their movements.

"I haven't seen anything like this," he said. "Where are they even from?"

Rocket didn't look at him.

"They're humans."

Star-Lord blinked.

"…you serious?"

His gaze shifted briefly, landing on one of the sorcerers nearby.

Wong.

Star-Lord immediately looked away.

He looked at the Ultramarines again.

"No way."

Rocket glanced at him briefly.

"Well, from what I can see, you're the weakest human here."

Drax nodded.

"That is correct."

Star-Lord looked offended.

"I am not."

He glanced around, searching for someone to prove his point.

His eyes landed on Spider-Man.

"What about that kid? I took him down before."

Rocket didn't react.

"You just said it. A kid."

Drax tilted his head.

"You are proud of defeating a child?"

Star-Lord paused.

"…okay, that sounds bad when you say it like that."

He looked away, muttering something under his breath.

Good thing Spider-Man didn't hear any of it.

He was focused on the front line, moving just behind the Dreadnought, helping where he could.

At the center of it all, Gaius stood still.

His hand rested against his chest.

His eyes closed for a brief moment.

And then,

Something answered.

"Gaius… my son."

The voice was calm.

Heavy.

But not cold.

His vision changed.

The battlefield disappeared.

In its place,

Light.

A sun.

Bright and endless.

Gaius stood before it.

Then the light shifted.

Formed.

A figure stepped forward from it.

A man.

Tall.

Dressed simply.

Not in armor.

But carrying a presence far greater than any armor could hold.

The Emperor.

Gaius looked at him directly.

"You spoke with the Ancient One."

The Emperor inclined his head slightly.

"We came to an understanding. She has seen what lies ahead, paths that end in ruin, and those that do not."

Gaius remained still.

"What kind of understanding?"

The answer came without hesitation.

"I will use the six Infinity Stones. Only for a moment, no more than is necessary."

A brief silence followed.

"In return, you will protect this world."

Not a request. Not a question.

A condition.

Gaius held his gaze.

He understood immediately.

He was part of the exchange.

But his expression didn't change.

"Protect Earth?" he said.

Then, calmly,

"As long as I am here, I will protect humanity."

The Emperor smiled faintly.

"I know."

He stepped closer.

"But that is what she asked for."

Gaius didn't argue.

Instead, he asked the only thing that mattered now.

"What about the being outside?"

The Emperor's expression remained steady.

"I am aware."

A brief pause.

"You cannot defeat it... Not yet."

Then,

"This time, I will help you."

There was weight behind those words.

Finality.

Gaius understood.

This would not happen again.

He nodded.

Firm.

Then everything shifted again.

Gaius opened his eyes.

He was back.

Tony was standing nearby, watching him.

"…you okay?" Tony asked.

But before Gaius could answer,

Doctor Strange stepped back.

His hands lifted instantly.

Golden runes formed around his wrists as he took a stance.

He felt it.

Something had changed.

The presence coming from Gaius,

It was different.

Stronger.

Comparable to the thing in the sky.

For a moment, he thought,

Possession.

But then,

Light.

It burst outward from Gaius.

Not explosive.

Not violent.

But overwhelming.

It spread across the battlefield in a wide wave.

Where it touched the corrupted Chitauri,

They burned.

Instantly.

Their bodies turned to ash, collapsing where they stood.

The wave continued, clearing everything in its path.

Tony stared.

"…what the hell…"

Then,

A figure appeared.

In front of Gaius.

Tall.

Massive.

Covered in gold.

A flaming sword in one hand.

The Emperor's Claw on the other.

He didn't speak.

But his presence filled everything.

Tony's eyes widened.

He recognized him. From the recordings his past self had, he had seen the Emperor's statue before, so he knew who he was.

"…Emperor of Mankind…?"

Strange glanced at him.

"…what?"

But he didn't get an answer.

His eyes were locked on the figure.

The power coming from it,

It wasn't just strong.

It was overwhelming.

The Emperor turned his head slightly.

He glanced at Tony.

Then at Strange.

He saw them.

Understood them.

Then looked away.

They were not his focus.

Above them,

The eye shifted.

Its attention changed.

From Gaius,

To the Emperor.

The red veins around it deepened.

It reacted.

Across the battlefield, the Ultramarines stopped.

The moment the light touched them,

They felt it.

Recognized it.

Every one of them dropped to one knee.

"Emperor of Mankind!" they called out.

Their voices carried.

Full of reverence.

Of loyalty.

The Dreadnought felt it too.

For a moment, the pain that had never left him faded. Not gone, but it no longer mattered. It had never mattered.

"…God-Emperor…" it said, its voice trembling slightly.

Behind them, the others looked on.

Spider-Man.

The Guardians.

The sorcerers.

They saw the figure standing there.

Golden.

Radiant.

Impossible.
